The Science of Creativity & How to Enhance Creative Innovation | Huberman Lab Podcast 103

featured image

In this episode, I explain how the brain engages in creative thinking and, based on that mechanistic understanding, the tools to improve one’s ability to think creatively and innovate in any area. I discuss how convergent and divergent thinking are essential for generating creative ideas and provide three types of meditation tools (open monitoring meditation, focused attention meditation & non-sleep deep rest; NSDR), which improve our ability to engage in these creative thinking patterns in specific and powerful ways. I also discuss how dopamine and mood contribute to the creative process and describe behavioral, nutritional and supplementation-based approaches for increasing dopamine to engage in creative thought and implementation. I explain how movement and storytelling (narrative) approaches can generate novel creative ideas and how substances like alcohol, cannabis, and psilocybin impact our creative ability. Excitingly, creativity is a skill that can be cultivated and enhanced; this episode outlines many tools to help anyone access creativity and apply creative patterns of thought to different domains of life.

Being told I had ADHD at 19 years old was unexpected on my end. Maybe if you've seen my videos before not so much....

*********Correction from the video: I mentioned three 'varieties' of ADHD: these are more just different ways it presents, not actually different forms of ADHD ********

*CORRECTION NOTICEAt 1: 15 I noted that in 1960 it was reported a racemic mixture of amphetamine could be used to control ADHD symptoms. However, I stated that it was approved by FDA for treatment of ADHD in 1996.. The treatment of ADHD in 1996. was approved by the FDA. However, it was approved in a 3:1 ratio between the d- and l-isomers (as I explain at 3 15 in this video), and not the racemic mixture in the 1960 research.

http://adhdinadults.com 100 years after the first known case of childhood attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder was published, adult ADHD still goes largely untreated and undiagnosed. It is estimated that 10 million adults suffer from undiagnosed ADHD.

The symptoms of ADHD (hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating or focusing on tasks) manifest differently in adults than they do in children and aduts tend to compensate for deficiencies by working harder, so it wasn't until recently that psychiatrists and doctors began treating ADHD in adults. The validity of Adult ADHD was frequently challenged and many people who suffered from attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder as children were believed to be cured in adulthood. Because of this belief, also known as the theory of Developmental Delay, doctors and insurance companies did not approve drugs for ADHD children once they reached adulthood. However, thanks to genetic, epidemiological and treatment studies, ADHD in adults is now recognized by the American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association.

SUNY Upstate Medical professor of Psychiatry, Stephen V. Faraone, PhD. explains the history of why this has gone largely untreated and urges primary care practitioners to learn to recognize and treat the afflication. Visit the link above to learn more. Our Website with Free Resources

Marissa has taken her diagnosis with Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and turned it in to the basis for her research. She studies the brain and the ways that ‘normal’ brains function as compared to brains of people who have ADHD.

Marissa is in her senior year as an undergraduate at the University of Washington in the Department of Psychology honors program. Currently, she is conducting her own individual research using EEG neurofeedback to improve reading retention in healthy individuals at the Cognition and Cortical Dynamics Laboratory under Dr. Chantel Prat. Marissa plans to graduate in the spring of 2016 with her B.S. in Psychology with honors. After completing her honors thesis, she will be submitting for publication and will continue to build her experience in the field of research. Marissa is experienced in a variety of areas including research, participant recruitment, training, experimental design, QEEG, non-profit leadership, and various skills from years in the workforce. She has an exceptional knowledge of EEG, QEEG, and neurofeedback literature. Marissa is a very driven and passionate young woman pursuing a Ph.D in cognitive neuroscience where she hopes to continue her research and career.

http://www.adhdinadults.com ADHD is a legitimate diagnosis with specific medical procedure for making the diagnosis, yet some physicians are hesitant to diagnose Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Doctors who treat adult patients should learn more about adult ADHD treatment options as well as the diagnosis process.

Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program, starts by examining ADHD in adults as a diagnosis and address some of the hesitation doctors have in identifying and treating adults with ADHD. Physicians may be concerned with medical legal consequences that can occur if a patient is abusing or diverting federally controlled medication. Anthony encourages physicians to follow standard medical practices to avoid legal issues when prescribing ADHD medications.

Dr. Brendan Montano, a primary care physician, says he became more comfortable prescribing ADHD medication once he had a better understanding of ADHD and more exposure to stimulant medication treatment. Pediatricians use stimulant ADHD in childhood and have been familiarized with stimulant medications and Dr. Montano believes the same will occur for physicians that treat adults.

This video also features, Dr. Stephen Faraone, a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Update Medical University, who explains some of the new developments in ADHD treatment options that reduce potential for stimulant abuse.

ADHD can be treated by a variety of medications, and the two most common drug classes used for treatment are stimulants and nonstimulants. The main difference between the two is that stimulants stimulate the Central Nervous System (CNS), and nonstimulants do not. Once stimulated, the CNS releases dopamine and adrenaline, prompting multiple reactions in the body, such as increased focus and a faster heart rate.

This video describes the differences between the two drug classes, gives popular examples of each (ie adderall and vyvanse as stimulants and wellbutrin and strattera as a nonstimulants) and describes the differences between the drugs with regard to their chemicals and compounds. But don't worry - I keep it fast-paced and upbeat, with a bit of humor sprinkled in.

I also answer a few popular questions, such as:

"Why do some medications work well for me, while others don't?"
"Is there a way to find out if a certain drug will work better for me?"
"What's the deal with citric and ascorbic acid (vitamin c)?"
"Should I eat before I take my medication?"
"How often should I take my medication?"
