What is ADHD?
It stands for Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The DSM-5 specifies that people with ADHD experience inattention and/or hyperactivity, which interferes with their functioning and/or development.

- In order to be diagnosed with ADHD 5 or more of the following symptoms of inattention need to have been present for at least 6 months:
Someone with ADHD often fails to pay attention to details, makes careless mistakes, has trouble holding attention, does not seem to listen, does not follow instructions through, has trouble organizing, dislikes or avoids tasks that require mental effort, often loses things, is easily distracted and is forgetful.
- And/or in order to be diagnosed with ADHD 5 or more of the following symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity should have been present for the last 6 months.
Someone with ADHD often fidgets or taps with his/hers hands or feet, leaves the seat in situations when it is expected to remain seated, runs or climbs in situations where this is inappropriate, can’t play quietly, talks excessively, blurts out an answer before a question has been completed, has trouble waiting on his/hers turn and interrupts or intrudes on others.

In addition to be diagnosed with ADHD some of the previously mentioned symptoms must have been present before the age of 12, the symptoms must be present in two or more settings,, the symptoms must clearly interfere with someone's social, school or work functioning and the symptoms can only be explained by ADHD and not by another mental disorder.

How is ADHD caused?:
Genetics are thought to determine about 75% of all cases, but the following environmental factors could also increase someones risk: alcohol intake during pregnancy, smoking during pregnancy, a premature birth, a low birthweight, extreme neglect, abuse, or social deprivation.

How common is ADHD?
New studies indicate that the percentage of the population with ADHD depends per community and country, but the global prevalence is between 2-7%. With an average of around 5%.

Treatment plan:
- Visit your doctor for a medical examination.
- Take good care for yourself. Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, maintain a structured sleeping schedule, eat enough vegetables and vitamines, drink about 2L of water each day and try to exercise regularly.
- Try these tips: create structure, break tasks into manageable pieces, limit distractions, exercise regularly, try out-loud thinking, try to pause a moment before talking or replying, take breaks and try to stay calm.
- Medication: it may help to reduce someone symptoms, increase concentrations and may improve someone functioning in sociale, school and/or work situations. Commonly prescribed medicine for ADHD are: methylphenidate, lisdexamfetamine, dexamfetamine, atomoxetine and guanfacine.
- Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy. This can be followed individually or in a group-setting. In psychotherapy the underlying psychological problems and the symptoms are address, with the aim to overcome these and replace these with healthier behavior. Psychotherapy usually lasts 6 weeks up to several months.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) aims to help you manage problems by changing how you think and act. It uses a range of psychological techniques to help you come to terms with your symptoms.
- Psycho-education, parent training and education programmes could also help.

How To Master Time Management – ADHD Skills Part 1

featured image

This video will show you what you can do to help your ADHD. This is a follow up to a video I did it on executive function. That video is What is Executive Function – How it Relates to ADHD Y

When it comes to non-medication ways to manage your ADHD symptoms, we can break it down into three domains: time management, organization and planning.

People with ADHD typically have trouble estimating how long things will take and adjusting their schedules accordingly. As a result you may be frequently late to things or this can even affect your ability to finish things because you don’t take into account how long it should take. With ADHD, the loss of time is a cumulative effect.
Step one to master this time management skill is to have constant access to timepieces.
Start by getting a watch and having an adequate number of clocks visible to you in areas where you spend time.
Then create your time log using your watch and your clocks. That may take you several days to do. And start with the big things you do like getting ready for work, chores, eating dinner, getting ready for bed. This list can also include things that you do at work so you can have a better understanding of how you use your time at work.

This it’s to help you appreciate Time.
Lastly you get a daily and a weekly or monthly planner. You’re going to use the daily planner to track your appointments, obligations and to do list. And you’re going to consult the planner twice a day. In the morning to appreciate the scope of your day and in the evening to reflect on how your day transpired and review what you’ve got going on tomorrow. It also gives you a chance to reschedule things you didn’t complete.

How To Push Through Tough Tasks - ADHD Skills Part 2

featured image

With ADHD, procrastination is huge. Nobody wants to do unpleasant tasks. ADHD can make it difficult to avoid certain tasks because they seem too large. You might think the task is too complicated or too time-consuming.

This video will show you how to finish tasks that you might normally put off. This is done by pairing enjoyable activities with unpleasant. You have now created the task list, identified the parts that are difficult and estimated how long it should take. This video will show you how to do it. The pleasant activity can be used immediately as a reward or simultaneously with the unpleasant. To make the unpleasant activity more bearable, you can create a comfortable environment. It’s like taking bad medicine and eating something sweet. You can also adjust the time you spend doing the unpleasant stuff to make it just before you do the good stuff.

To be able to complete tasks on time, the second tip is to prioritize them according to importance. This will help you to avoid wasting time on unnecessary things and make it easier to focus on the important stuff. More firerills will result. You become inefficient and forgetful when you are constantly playing catch up.

How To Master Time Management - ADHD Skills Part 1

featured image

This video will show you what you can do to help your ADHD. This video is a continuation of a video I made on executive function. This video is called What is Executive Function? – How it Relates To ADHD Y
We can divide ADHD management into three areas: time management, organization, and planning.

ADHD sufferers often have difficulty estimating the time it will take to complete a task and then adjusting their schedule accordingly. This can lead to you being late or even unable to complete tasks as you don’t consider how long it should take. ADHD is a chronic condition that causes time loss.
To master time management, you must have access to your timepieces at all times.
Get a watch, and make sure you have enough clocks visible in the areas you spend most of your time.
Next, create your time log with your watch and clocks. This may take several days. Start with the important things like getting dressed, doing chores, cooking dinner, and getting ready to go. You can include work-related activities in this list to help you gain a better understanding about how you spend your time at work.

This is to help you appreciate Time.
Finally, you will receive a daily, weekly, or monthly planner. The daily planner will be used to keep track of your appointments, obligations, and to-do list. The planner will be used twice daily. You’ll use the morning to assess the scope of your day, and the evening to review how it went and what you have planned for tomorrow. You can also reschedule any tasks you missed.
