A medicine widely used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder also provides long-term relief from the attention and behavior changes that affect many childhood cancer survivors, according to a trial led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Young cancer survivors performed better than unmedicated patients in tests of sustained attention and other measures related to attention, social skills, and behavior one year after they started methylphenidate. Heather Conklin, Ph.D. from the St. Jude Psychology Department, is the first to publish the research in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

What is Executive Function - How it Relates to ADHD

featured image

This is part one in a series of videos talking about managing ADHD symptoms with medication. Because ADHD can be thought of as a disorder of executive functioning so understanding this is an important lead in to making behavioral changes.

Executive function is a set of cognitive or thinking skills that are responsible for
• Planning, organizing and prioritizing
• initiating actions
• Self-inhibition
• Self-monitoring your behavior
• being able to shift your attention between tasks
• Working memory

The control for your executive functions occur in the frontal part of your brain that includes the frontal lobes and other structures such as the basal ganglia which are further down from the lobes. Executive function is also controlled by your pre-frontal cortex.

There are many conditions that could impair your executive functioning. Some of these are depression and a traumatic brain injury. A traumatic brain injury occurs when you have an injury to your head that disrupts your brain tissue. Alcohol temporarily impairs executive functioning. And if you have a stroke that occurs in the frontal part of your brain, you can have trouble with some of these functions.

The stimulant medications like Ritalin and Adderall used to treat ADHD work to increase dopamine in the pre-frontal cortex. But even with medication, many people are still left with difficulties managing some of these functions. Cognitive behavior therapy focuses on managing some of these executive skills.

What is Executive Function - How it Relates to ADHD

featured image

This is part one in a series of videos talking about managing ADHD symptoms with medication. ADHD can be viewed as a disorder in executive functioning. Understanding this will help you make behavioral changes.

Executive function refers to a set cognitive or thinking skills that is responsible for
.Prioritizing
: Planning, organizing, and prioritizinginitiating actions
Self-inhibition
Self-monitoring of your behavior
Being able to switch your attention between tasks
Working memory

Your executive functions are controlled by the frontal portion of your brain. This includes the frontal and basal ganglia, which are lower than the lobes. Your pre-frontal cortex also controls executive function.

Many conditions can affect your executive functioning. Depression and a traumatic head injury are two examples. Traumatic brain injuries are caused by an injury to the brain that causes damage to brain tissue. Executive functioning temporarily is affected by alcohol. If you suffer from a stroke in the frontal area of your brain, it can cause problems with certain functions.

ADHD medications Ritalin and Adderall, which are stimulants, work by increasing dopamine levels in the pre-frontal cortex. Many people still have difficulties with managing certain functions even after taking medication. Cognitive behavior therapy is a treatment that focuses on the management of some executive skills.

Adderall Lyrics:

Lately been feelin' the pressure
Clockin' in hours like extra
But you charge me up like a Tesla, woah
I'm fallin' asleep at the red light
Locked in the studio late night
Three days since I've seen the sunlight, woah

But every time I hit a wall
You come over when I call
Keep me up like Adderall
Don't know how ya do it
All the noise inside my head
Fades away when you undress
Paradise inside my bed
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah

I'm fuckin' tired
But you got me wired
Ooooh, ya cause it's never hard to focus on you
I'm so exhausted
I'm drained like a faucet
Ooooh, yeah but it's never hard to focus on you

Oh na na na
Focus, focus
Oh na na na

Oh na na na

Lately my eyes lookin' bloodshot
Been on the road like a whole lot
Hotel to hotel it's nonstop, woah

I know that you on your grind too
