Hyperfocus? Hyperfixation? What is the difference? What does it mean? What do they mean? Are they strengths? They can be very useful. Rick shares his personal experience with hyperfocus, both at work and at play. He talks about how he gets in the zone, focused on what he is doing, and how it has helped him get in the zone. He also shows his personal hyperfixation with 50.

HYPERFOCUS vs HYPERFIXATION WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Two terms that are often used in the media lately are Hyperfocus and HyperFixation. You may have missed it because you were too focused on other things. You are busy. Many Patrons have asked …”What’s the difference between Hyper-focus or Hyper-fixation?
Good question! There are many definitions. It is confusing. Others claim it is the same thing, but with different names.
When their child is actually hyper-focused, parents complain that they get too obsessed with video games. Others will confess that they become hyper-focused on having the perfect house or rescuing dogs. That’s my definition.
Here’s my take. This is the Ricktionary’s definition of the difference… It may or not add to the confusion.
First Hyperfocus, which I am very familiar with. When I start something, hours go by and my mind is oblivious. Or my bladder shouts, I’m full. Paradoxically, Hyperfocus can make me quite the opposite. I can become distracted easily, zoned out and tuned out when I’m not there. Yes, it may seem like I’m listening ,… but I’m actually lost in thought. Or thoughts. Your mind racing. Jump, skip and jump. You are here, there and everywhere… (MORE THINKTS).
Yet, I admit that I sometimes find it difficult to stay focused. This is crucial because people will dismiss children or adults who are distracted. Kinda. Somewhat. Often mostly. Yes, I can focus even hyper-focus on what interests me, even if there are a lot of urgent things that I need to do. It’s stuff I might actually be interested in. Or, you have to.
Although I am a little like Goldilocks I would not casually break into bear’s dens without knocking. I understand her search for the perfect chair. It should be soft enough to support the porridge, but not too hard.
Sometimes my attention is too weak… or too intense… but sometimes it’s just right. When I am in the zone, it’s a good thing. Sometimes, I get hyperfocused and it doesn’t matter if I want it to. It’s not like Goldilocks that I can just switch to the next bowl. Hyperfocus is not a quirk or strength. It’s a weakness that social media exploits and interferes with my daily life.
We’ve also shown how procrastination can be a problem. In previous videos, we discussed how it is possible to struggle to get started and to focus on the important things. But, there are other tasks that make it easy to start. Hyperfocus can be very easy to slip into.
Imagine someone engaging in a hobby, playing a musical instrument, drawing, or even planning.
It happens to me when I’m alone building a world or in front of a crowd ….. I get lost in the world and hyperfocused, whether I am building for myself or others. I spent hours building models for the local railway museum. I forgot to track my hours so that I could invoice my time.
Or I might get stuck in a TV script for hours. If that’s the script I should be working on.
Hyperfocus can be helpful, provided I do the right thing. Unfortunately, my tendency to grab onto trivial and irrelevant things that are interesting to me is a problem. I don’t pay attention to the important or urgent matters, which for some reason, doesn’t interest me. It can be difficult to find interest in something you don’t like. Would you like to hear me talk for three hours about Model Railroading? See.
It is difficult to choose to be interested in something. Why? What is the explanation? A task or an idea does not trigger Dopamine or Norepinephrine neurotransmitters. It’s continuous. As we do more, our neural pathways strengthen and link with other neurons.
My model railroad was my favorite thing about school. I could focus on trains for hours. Days. That was when I was a child. When I’m tired of boring tasks such as paperwork, I get up and build my model railroad.
Let’s talk about simple ways to save time and energy. And since “Time is Money” we will also be saving money. Oh, and saving your sanity. You can never have enough sanity.

Hi I’m Rick Green and I want to know how to solve two challenges at once.
The first challenge is I want to stop screaming I had it in my hand a minute ago, it being the stuff I use every day; phone, keys, wallet, scissors.
The second challenge, I want to stop wondering where are my spare glasses? Or where’s the tape measure or my blood work form, you know, the things I don’t use every day, or the things that go into seasonal hibernation; winter boots, summer shorts, car battery charger which we need right now, where is it? and I’m running all over the place. I want that to end and I want to know how to make it stop.
All right let’s look at these two big time wasters. I’m out to conquer them because I don’t have time to waste and the reason I don’t have time to waste is that up until now I have wasted a lot of time.
The question: Where is the thing I was holding 10 seconds ago, or where is the stuff that we packed away for the summer, or for the rainy day?
The answer is not to work on my memory, yes we will look at short-term memory and long-term memory and how to improve it in other videos, but I have found through decades of hard work and personal experience that doesn’t help me in the moment with the stuff that should be a no-brainer, the stuff that I shouldn’t have to worry about remembering.
I don’t need to work on my memory to find my toothbrush every day, that’s not the challenge; this is about the stuff I lose all the time. The answer actually is prevention, prevention.
Let me explain, years ago when I was giving a presentation on how to present a great presentation, it was for demonstrators at a science museum and at some point one person asked um how do you get the audience back again after you’ve lost their attention? The answer is something that I had learned when I was practicing to become a world-class magician, which eventually I did not become, and I said the secret to getting the audience’s attention back is don’t lose it in the first place, right?
Direct their attention or in magic it’s called misdirection in fact a horse ran through, you didn’t even see it you’re so focused on me. Amazing but if I don’t use a number of tools and tricks and practices to distract your attention [Video Clip of Rick doing magic in slow motion] then not so amazing, you know where it is. Am I getting off topic here? Probably.
So the secret to not misplacing things is to have a place for it, that way you avoid the “what happened to the hand sanitizer? I had it in my pocket, where is it?” and then I find it upstairs in the bathroom and I haven’t been to the upstairs bathroom all day, but apparently…
You may have asked other people friends or family honey where is my purse, or honey where is the remote for the TV, honey where are the batteries for the remote for the TV, or honey where do we keep the flashlight?
Well here’s a less common question one that I’ve never even asked ever, honey where is the cutlery? Where do you think it is? In the cutlery drawer, where it always is.
Now think about that “where it always is”, where it always is, oh can you imagine, can you imagine where’s the cutlery? Where it always is! In fact you could come to our house, I wouldn’t bother it’s a bit of a mess now and look at all the drawers that we have in every room and I bet you could pick out the cutlery drawer on your first guess. You’d probably go to the kitchen right? Good, good, top drawer by the stove, voila! You’re right, the cutlery drawer, you found it.
If I came to your place I could figure out where you keep your cutlery and utensils in two or three guesses tops, whereas if I had to guess where you keep your earrings, or note paper, or place mats, candles, shoe polish, actually I know where we keep our shoe polish.
For a long time I did not have a place for things, no foam drawer, or wallet shelf, a key tray or a drawer specifically for my Fitbit and the charger, the list of excuses as to why I didn’t exercise today.
Having a cutlery drawer saves valuable time, searching the whole kitchen or even the whole house every time you need a spoon? I mean really?? Check the bathroom, oh look in the broom closet, where are my socks? Check the china cabinet, and then… Dumb. Right?
Hyperfocus? Hyperfixation? What’s the difference? What do they mean? And are they strengths? Or a weakness? Can they be useful? Unlike Goldilocks I can’t just switch to the next bowl… it’s one more, then another… and another, and one more. Then hyperfocus isn’t a quirk or a strength, it’s a weakness, exploited by social media, and interfering with my life.
In other videos on procrastination we’ve looked at how anyone can struggle to get started, to focus on what needs doing… and yet, with other tasks, starting is not problem. We can slip into hyperfocus very quickly.

Or, I might start writing a television script and get locked in, for hours and hours… Which is great. If it’s the script that I’m supposed to be working on.
Hyperfocus can be useful… when I’m doing the right thing. Unfortunately, I easily latch onto something trivial, irrelevant, but interesting to me, and never attend to what is urgent, important, but for some reason doesn’t interest my brain. It’s a challenge to become interested in something that doesn’t interest you. Would you like me to talk about Model Railroading for 3 hours? See.
It’s difficult to “choose to be interested,” about something. Why? What’s going on? On a neurochemical level, a task or idea doesn’t trigger the Dopamine, Norepinephrine, these neurotransmitters that give us get up and go! And it’s ongoing. The more we do something, the more the neural pathways grow and strengthen and link to other neurons.
As a kid I always worked on my model railroad rather than homework. I could hyperfocus on trains for hours. Days. Of course, that was then, I was just a child. Today, when it’s time to do boring tasks like paperwork, I go and work on my model railroad.

[Chorus]
I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like I can’t trust no one around me
There’s another side of me, but I don’t even show it
¢Cause I got way too many people eatin’ off me
Been through depression and I learned my lesson
So, I count my blessings and run it up
But I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like I can’t trust no one around me
‘Cause I got anxiety
‘Cause I got anxiety
[Verse 1]
Yeah, overthink (yeah)
Conversation , complicated , consequences
People talkin’, ain’t got no patience
Just get that money and get that paper
And it don’t matter how I do it
They gon’ love or hate it
I’ve been going through it , got my mind racin’
And they gon’ have to face it
I’m destined for greatness
I’m in first place, they keep tryin’ to take it
Yeah yeah yeah !
[Pre-Chorus:Coi]
Been getting high to kill the pain
Yeah Yeah Yeah !
Wish I could make it go away
[Verse 2]
Yeah, they tryin’ to break me, I can never let it phase me
I gotta learn to embrace it, Won’t let it change it
Even when life get crazy, Ima always be the same me
Remember I was starvin’, had to get it from the bottom
Now I got all these problems, money can’t solve ‘em
But I bet the money off ‘em, gotta proceed with caution
They like Coi you wildin’, Ima go get it regardless
Too busy countin’ my pockets, I’m the hot topic
I’m the reason why they talkin’, only pop out when I’m shoppin’
Yeah, keep that thing on me, Draco 223
Nobody can fuck with me, my money therapy
[Pre-Chorus:Coi]
Been getting high to kill the pain
yeah, yeah, yeah
Wish I could make it go away
[Chorus]
I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like, I can’t trust no one around me
There’s another side of me, but I don’t even show it
‘Cause I got way too many people eatin’ off me
Been through depression and I learned my lesson
So, I count my blessings and run it up
But I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like, I can’t trust no one around me

As a kid I always worked on my model railroad rather than homework. I could hyperfocus on trains for hours. Days. Of course, that was then, I was just a child. Today, when it’s time to do boring tasks like paperwork, I go and work on my model railroad.
Timothee as "Teenage Stephen" in The Adderall Diaries (2015)

part 3 />
Timothee only appears in memories. Film is R rated for scenes with drug use, violence, physical abuse, ETC (cant tag more without giving spoilers). I kept enough of grown up Stephen's life in these clips to give a better understanding of those memory scenes.

Right?

For many families medication is a necessary option to treat the symptoms of ADHD. In this instance, you would contact your pediatrician, your child's psychologist or your pediatric neurologist to help abate some of the symptoms of ADHD. It's really important to sit down with this professional and ask questions about positive outcome, about potential side effects and how well your child can tolerate these medications. Typically for ADHD, the medications of choice are stimulant medications and non-stimulant medications. Some of the more common stimulant medications include Ritalin, and Dexadrine, and Adderal, or Focalin or Vyvanse. And some of these are long lasting long acting medications and some are very short acting. Often, your medical doctor will use some of these medications in combination to best help your child. Sometimes children can't tolerate the side effects of the stimulant medications, so your medical professional may suggest something that's a non-stimulant. Stratera is a popular brand of medication. One thing that I always tell parents that's very important, if you're trying medication with your child, stay in very close contact with your medical doctor. And make sure if there are any changes in your child's behavior or symptoms, that you immediately let them know. Also, teachers and other adults that are working with your child are very good sources of information to let you know whether your child's symptoms have actually improved or if there are some other issues that need to be addressed. While there are many medication options to treat ADHD, it's really important that parents consider what we've said here and discuss the treatment strategies with their medical doctor.
