I had a black dog, his name was depression

featured image

At its worst, depression can be a frightening, debilitating condition. Millions of people around the world live with depression. Many of these individuals and their families are afraid to talk about their struggles, and don’t know where to turn for help. However, depression is largely preventable and treatable. Recognizing depression and seeking help is the first and most critical towards recovery.

In collaboration with WHO to mark World Mental Health Day, writer and illustrator Matthew Johnstone tells the story of overcoming the “black dog of depression”. More information on the book can be found here: /

I had always thought of myself as a shy, cautious fellow. Careful. Overly averse to risk, rejection, or danger. But the fact is, at certain times in my life I've taken huge risks--quitting an interesting, secure, teaching position to try and make a living doing comedy for example. Or, creating a humor-filled documentary on a controversial mental health diagnosis, despite not being a doctor and never having made a documentary.

And then there are the less 'life-changing', but to me, equally memorable moments of spontaneity. Here's the story of one act of impulsivity that turned out better than I could have imagined. A lesson in seizing opportunities, but also being prepared to make them happen.

Clinical Depression Linked to Back Pain

featured image

If you suffer from chronic back pain, doctors say you are at the greater risk of developing clinical depression. According to spinehealth.com, 85% with chronic back pain are more likely to develop symptoms of depression.

These symptoms can include sleep disturbances, anxiety, fear of death, and loss of interest. Andrew Block, from The Texas back institute, spoke out about the link between depression, chronic back pain and anxiety. He said that it is harder to spot a sing than you might think. There are many signs that depression and chronic pain share many of the same symptoms. They feed off each other.

Dr Michael Van Korff, the associate director at the Centre for Health Studies in Seattle’s Group Help Cooperative, has researched the relationship between depression and pain. People with depression and pain have shown that depression can be relieved by reducing pain.

Chronic pain can lead to depressions that are more likely to persist. Dr Korff states that many aspects of the study are still being done.

We now want to hear your thoughts. Please comment below the video to join the discussion.

featuring ADAA member Lizabeth Roemer, PhD.

This webinar describes the nature of anxiety and various ways in which anxiety can be maintained. Dr. Roemer provides an overview of mindfulness, the various ways it can be practiced, and how mindfulness can be of benefit to those with anxiety. She describes the importance of values-based living (doing what matters to us regardless of our anxiety) as the behavioral goal of mindfulness practice.

Dr. Lizabeth Roemer is Chair and Professor in the Department of Psychology at University of Massachusetts Boston, where she is actively involved in research and clinical training of doctoral students in clinical psychology. Dr. Roemer has published over 120 journal articles and book chapters and coauthored four books. With Dr. Susan Orsillo, Dr. Roemer has developed an acceptance-based behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder. They have examined this treatment in studies funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. Their self-help book, The Mindful Way through Anxiety: Break Free from Chronic Worry and Reclaim Your Life, and self-help workbook, Worry Less, Live More: The Mindful Way Through Anxiety Workbook, draw from their decades of research in this area to provide guidance to people struggling with anxiety.
