Hyperfocus? Hyperfixation? What is the difference? What does it mean? What do they mean? Are they strengths? They can be very useful. Rick shares his personal experience with hyperfocus, both at work and at play. He talks about how he gets in the zone, focused on what he is doing, and how it has helped him get in the zone. He also shows his personal hyperfixation with 50.

HYPERFOCUS vs HYPERFIXATION
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Two terms that are often used in the media lately are Hyperfocus and HyperFixation. You may have missed it because you were too focused on other things. You are busy. Many Patrons have asked …”What’s the difference between Hyper-focus or Hyper-fixation?

Good question! There are many definitions. It is confusing. Others claim it is the same thing, but with different names.

When their child is actually hyper-focused, parents complain that they get too obsessed with video games. Others will confess that they become hyper-focused on having the perfect house or rescuing dogs. That’s my definition.

Here’s my take. This is the Ricktionary’s definition of the difference… It may or not add to the confusion.

First Hyperfocus, which I am very familiar with. When I start something, hours go by and my mind is oblivious. Or my bladder shouts, I’m full. Paradoxically, Hyperfocus can make me quite the opposite. I can become distracted easily, zoned out and tuned out when I’m not there. Yes, it may seem like I’m listening ,… but I’m actually lost in thought. Or thoughts. Your mind racing. Jump, skip and jump. You are here, there and everywhere… (MORE THINKTS).

Yet, I admit that I sometimes find it difficult to stay focused. This is crucial because people will dismiss children or adults who are distracted. Kinda. Somewhat. Often mostly. Yes, I can focus even hyper-focus on what interests me, even if there are a lot of urgent things that I need to do. It’s stuff I might actually be interested in. Or, you have to.

Although I am a little like Goldilocks I would not casually break into bear’s dens without knocking. I understand her search for the perfect chair. It should be soft enough to support the porridge, but not too hard.

Sometimes my attention is too weak… or too intense… but sometimes it’s just right. When I am in the zone, it’s a good thing. Sometimes, I get hyperfocused and it doesn’t matter if I want it to. It’s not like Goldilocks that I can just switch to the next bowl. Hyperfocus is not a quirk or strength. It’s a weakness that social media exploits and interferes with my daily life.

We’ve also shown how procrastination can be a problem. In previous videos, we discussed how it is possible to struggle to get started and to focus on the important things. But, there are other tasks that make it easy to start. Hyperfocus can be very easy to slip into.

Imagine someone engaging in a hobby, playing a musical instrument, drawing, or even planning.

It happens to me when I’m alone building a world or in front of a crowd ….. I get lost in the world and hyperfocused, whether I am building for myself or others. I spent hours building models for the local railway museum. I forgot to track my hours so that I could invoice my time.

Or I might get stuck in a TV script for hours. If that’s the script I should be working on.

Hyperfocus can be helpful, provided I do the right thing. Unfortunately, my tendency to grab onto trivial and irrelevant things that are interesting to me is a problem. I don’t pay attention to the important or urgent matters, which for some reason, doesn’t interest me. It can be difficult to find interest in something you don’t like. Would you like to hear me talk for three hours about Model Railroading? See.

It is difficult to choose to be interested in something. Why? What is the explanation? A task or an idea does not trigger Dopamine or Norepinephrine neurotransmitters. It’s continuous. As we do more, our neural pathways strengthen and link with other neurons.

My model railroad was my favorite thing about school. I could focus on trains for hours. Days. That was when I was a child. When I’m tired of boring tasks such as paperwork, I get up and build my model railroad.

HYPERFOCUS vs HYPERFIXATION
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
You may have noticed two terms, being bandied about a lot lately, Hyperfocus and Hyper-Fixation. Or you may not have noticed, because you were hyperfocused on other stuff. You are a busy person. Several Patrons have asked…“What is the difference, if there is one, between Hyper-focus and Hyper-fixation.”

Good question! I found a variety of definitions. So it is confusing. Some claiming it’s the same thing with different names.

Parents complain that their child gets hyper-fixated playing video games, when they’re actually hyper-focused. Other people will admit they are hyper-focused on rescuing dogs, or having the perfect house, when they’re actually hyper-fixated. At least in my definition of the terms.

So, here’s my take. This is the difference according to the Ricktionary… This may or may not add to the confusion.

First Hyperfocus, which I know well. I start something and hours pass, and I am oblivious until my stomach says, “I’m empty!” Or my bladder shouts, “I’m full.” Paradoxically, paradollicos paradoxical… Oddly enough, when I’m not in a state of Hyperfocus I can be quite the opposite: mind wandering, easily distracted, zoned out, tuned out. And yes, I may look like I’m listening,… I’m lost in thought. Or thoughts. Mind racing. Hop skip and jump. Here, There and Everywhere… (MORE THOUGHTS).

And yet, as I say, sometimes I can be Hyperfocused. This is important because people will dismiss a child, or adult who is distracted, “You can focus just fine when you want to,” They’re right. Kinda. Sort of. Often mostly. Yes…I can focus, even Hyper-Focus on something that interests me… Even when there is a slew of urgent stuff I need to get to. Stuff I may actually want to get to. Or, have to do.

I’m a bit like Goldilocks, although I wouldn’t casually breaking into bear’s dens, without knocking. But I get her quest to find the chair that’s not to hard, not too soft, the porridge that’s just right, and then needing a nap, but unable to rest unless the bed is just right.

My attention can be too little… Or way too much… Or, once in a while, just right. Then I’m in the zone. But sometimes I’m hyperfocused whether I want it to be or not. Unlike Goldilocks I can’t just switch to the next bowl… it’s one more, then another… and another, and one more. Then hyperfocus isn’t a quirk or a strength, it’s a weakness, exploited by social media, and interfering with my life.

In other videos on procrastination we’ve looked at how anyone can struggle to get started, to focus on what needs doing… and yet, with other tasks, starting is not problem. We can slip into hyperfocus very quickly.

Think of someone practicing a sport they love, a musical instrument, playing a video game, drawing, even for some people, paperwork or planning… Their minds are engaged.

For me, it happens when I’m onstage in front of a crowd….or alone, building a miniature world. I’m lost to the world hyperfocused whether I’m building for myself or for others. I spent hours focused on building models for a local railway museum, but kept forgetting to keep track of my hours so I could invoice for my time.

Or, I might start writing a television script and get locked in, for hours and hours… Which is great. If it’s the script that I’m supposed to be working on.

Hyperfocus can be useful… when I’m doing the right thing. Unfortunately, I easily latch onto something trivial, irrelevant, but interesting to me, and never attend to what is urgent, important, but for some reason doesn’t interest my brain. It’s a challenge to become interested in something that doesn’t interest you. Would you like me to talk about Model Railroading for 3 hours? See.

It’s difficult to “choose to be interested,” about something. Why? What’s going on? On a neurochemical level, a task or idea doesn’t trigger the Dopamine, Norepinephrine, these neurotransmitters that give us get up and go! And it’s ongoing. The more we do something, the more the neural pathways grow and strengthen and link to other neurons.

As a kid I always worked on my model railroad rather than homework. I could hyperfocus on trains for hours. Days. Of course, that was then, I was just a child. Today, when it’s time to do boring tasks like paperwork, I go and work on my model railroad.

Lyrics:

[Chorus]
I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like I can’t trust no one around me
There’s another side of me, but I don’t even show it
¢Cause I got way too many people eatin’ off me
Been through depression and I learned my lesson
So, I count my blessings and run it up
But I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like I can’t trust no one around me
‘Cause I got anxiety
‘Cause I got anxiety

[Verse 1]
Yeah, overthink (yeah)
Conversation , complicated , consequences
People talkin’, ain’t got no patience
Just get that money and get that paper
And it don’t matter how I do it
They gon’ love or hate it
I’ve been going through it , got my mind racin’
And they gon’ have to face it
I’m destined for greatness
I’m in first place, they keep tryin’ to take it
Yeah yeah yeah !

[Pre-Chorus:Coi]
Been getting high to kill the pain
Yeah Yeah Yeah !
Wish I could make it go away

[Verse 2]
Yeah, they tryin’ to break me, I can never let it phase me
I gotta learn to embrace it, Won’t let it change it
Even when life get crazy, Ima always be the same me
Remember I was starvin’, had to get it from the bottom
Now I got all these problems, money can’t solve ‘em
But I bet the money off ‘em, gotta proceed with caution
They like Coi you wildin’, Ima go get it regardless
Too busy countin’ my pockets, I’m the hot topic
I’m the reason why they talkin’, only pop out when I’m shoppin’
Yeah, keep that thing on me, Draco 223
Nobody can fuck with me, my money therapy

[Pre-Chorus:Coi]
Been getting high to kill the pain
yeah, yeah, yeah
Wish I could make it go away

[Chorus]
I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like, I can’t trust no one around me
There’s another side of me, but I don’t even show it
‘Cause I got way too many people eatin’ off me
Been through depression and I learned my lesson
So, I count my blessings and run it up
But I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me
Sometimes I feel like, I can’t trust no one around me
‘Cause I got anxiety
‘Cause I got anxiety
