However, a great deal of the visible problems among ADHD people are a result of those individuals being paralyzed by overwhelm. This session will teach techniques for breaking out of “overwhelm,” the mental state experienced when one’s brain is flooded with thoughts and information, creating mental paralysis in many with ADHD.

Bonnie Mincu, founder of “Thrive with ADD” is a Senior Certified ADHD Coach for Attention Deficit Disorder Adults. Bonnie became an ADHD Coach following 20+ years in corporate management, coaching, training and consulting. Today, I'm going to talk about five types of anxiety disorders. Get your FREE Healthy Habits Guide! s

Facebook: a

Are you are worrier? No, I don't mean do you have appropriate concern. I mean do you have excessive, consistent, persistent worry that causes you distress or even impairs your life? Let me ask you this: have you ever locked the front door, and you know you locked that front door, yet the thought of the possibility of it being unlocked drives you to go and lock it again, and then to keep checking over and over again to make sure that it's locked? If the answer is "yes", you may have an anxiety disorder.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
Call 1-800-273-8255

5 Types of Anxiety disorders that may surprise you

1. Generalized anxiety disorder.
Now again, it is normal to have some worry, some anxiety. But a generalized anxiety disorder is different. In generalized anxiety disorder, there is an excessive, consistent, persistent worry which actually causes great distress, and it impairs a life's function.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder used to be classified as an anxiety disorder, but now it actually has a classification of its own. But I'll still address it in this video because anxiety is so relevant in OCD.

3. Panic disorder.
Panic disorder is characterized by an abrupt, spontaneous, intense fear that leads to physical symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, hyperventilation. A panic attack can cause a person to feel like they are just extremely physically ill, and it often leads to them going to the emergency department.

4. Social anxiety disorder, or social phobia.
Social anxiety disorder is characterized by an intense fear of embarrassment, humiliation, scrutiny, judgment in social settings or in settings where one has to perform or speak. The intense anxiety, or the fear caused by these social settings, is so extreme that it will cause a person with social anxiety disorder to avoid these social settings, even if it's to the person's own detriment.

5. Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.
PTSD can occur in a person who has lived through a trauma. And by trauma I mean an event that has caused serious harm or even death or an event that had the potential to cause serious harm, injury, or death.

Fortunately, there are treatments for anxiety disorders. Depending on the specific type of anxiety disorder or the patient, the treatments will vary. So, treatments include therapy, such as psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy, or medications. There can be psychotropic drugs, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines.
If any of these symptoms sound like they could affect you or a loved one, please consult your physician, and get worked up. Find out if you could have an anxiety disorder, and what the best treatment for you might be.
Please comment down below. Anxiety disorders are so common, but we don't really talk about them that often. If you've experienced an anxiety disorder, or if you have any questions, please comment. I want to hear about it.

featured image

On this podcast Episode Tara McGillicuddy talks with Dana Rayburn about the The Secret Habits of Organized People. Dana shares some life changing tips that will help adults with ADHD become organized and have more control in their lives.

Dana Rayburn specializes in coaching adults with Attention Deficit Disorder to live more successful, effortless and rewarding lives despite their ADD or AD/HD. Dana is committed to bringing clarity and simplicity into her client’s lives. As Dana’s client Sandy recently said, “I am filled with a sense of calm and hope when I work with Dana.”

Her personal struggle with inattentive ADD, cemented Dana’s decision to become an ADD coach. She says, “I know how much more satisfying my life has been since I’ve applied the structure that helps me manage my ADD, and I want to share that with my clients. Though ADD can be a struggle, I see it as a gift that makes life much more exciting and rich than it would otherwise be. I want to help my clients learn to use their ADD to their advantage and to set themselves up for success.”

Dana came to coaching as a professional organizer. Since 1992, Dana has taught businesses and individuals practical ways to manage paper, stuff, space and time; skills greatly needed by her ADD clients. Prior to that she was business systems analyst for Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles. Dana is a magna cum laude graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills with a degree in business administration. She lives with her husband, daughter and dogs in the beautiful Rogue River Valley in Southern Oregon. She enjoys hiking, singing, cross country skiing and reading.

Whether (or how) to treat a child with ADHD is an understandably tough decision for many parents. My mom decided to, and faced (as many parents do) judgement for her choices. Here’s what I want to say to her, and every parent who finds themselves accused of “drugging” their children.

My Little Villagers' response: /

Thank you to my Patreon supporters, for the sake of keeping this video short and shareable I didn't do my usual intro or wrapup, but I could not have done this without all of you.

By the way, in case anyone is curious -- I take Vyvanse now, but I started on Ritalin.

Transcript of video:

What I want to say to my mom, who "drugged" me:

Thank you. Thank you for listening when I told you I was struggling. Thank you for standing up for me when my dad tried to dismiss what I was dealing with as "normal." I now understand ADHD is highly genetic and it's likely he felt that way because he probably had ADHD himself.

Thank you for taking me to get a proper evaluation so I understand my brain's differences and don't feel like it's just all my fault. Thank you for taking me to a psychiatrist, month after month, to find a treatment and dose that worked for me. And for taking me back month after month after month after month -- I know you were busy, and yet I never ran out of medication because you took the time to take me to every appointment.

Thank you for ignoring the people who judged you. I know there were many.

Thank you for understanding that there was a difference between my sister occasionally forgetting her homework and me losing or forgetting something almost every day. Thank you for understanding that while all children can be fidgety or impulsive or get distracted, I struggled way more than the other kids my age. I now understand it's because ADHD brains develop differently.

You didn't know that, you hadn't done the research I have, but you listened to me when I told you I needed help.

Because of you, I got the treatment I needed, I did better in school, I felt more confident and able to reach my potential. Because of you, I never had to self medicate like so many ADHDers I know. I never sank into depression. I never gave up on myself. I never felt misunderstood. You understood. You believed me.

And when you did, when you took me to a doctor who could explain to me what was happening in my brain, you took away so much shame.

Thanks, mom.

http://adhdinadults.com/ Learn how healthcare professionals can better educate their patients about Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and how to facilitate the conversations surrounding ADHD from Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program. Rostain offers doctors and/or PCPs guidance on how to educate patients about adult ADHD and set them up for successful treatment.

When discussing ADHD for the first time with a patient, the doctor should help the patient identify some of their strengths as well as their weaknesses as they relate to ADHD. Highlighting positive characteristics helps give patient hope and reminds the patient there is support available for managing their disorder. Encouraging patients to learn about changes in their home environment and providing other strategies for patients to cope with ADHD is also encouraged.

Doctors should discuss expectations regarding treatment options early. In order to effectively do so, physicians should be aware of the prescription options available for treating patients (stimulants and non-stimulants). Healthcare professionals should also know about local cognitive therapy resources that are available to help patients manage their ADHD.

One kind of barrier that patients may have is overcoming behavioral problems, such as procrastination. Another barrier is a lack of confidence, due to the interference ADHD has had over the course of the patient's life. These barriers can result in compensatory strategies that can interfere with coping strategies. Cognitive therapy can help patients reduce symptoms and improve functioning without medication and knowing its advantages is important to counseling patients.
