If you suffer or know someone who suffers from ADHD then you know the effort it takes to stay on track. Katherine was only diagnosed as an adult but admits to a lifetime of distractions. She shares some important wisdom we all might gain from the more than 16 million adults in the US like her. Katherine Ellison won a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting two years after surviving an $11 million libel lawsuit for a careless reporting error. Her roller-coaster career is an extreme example of what can happen when you have ADHD. Katherine has more than 30 years of wide-ranging experience in digging for facts, framing messages, and producing vivid prose. From 1984-99, Ellison reported for Knight Ridder Newspapers, winning several awards including a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. Since then, she has authored, co-authored, and ghost-written ten books and worked as a communication consultant and speechwriter for clients including Bill Gates, major Silicon Valley investors, the Ford, Packard, and Irvine foundations and Cater Communications. She was diagnosed with the ADHD at age 48, on the heels of her elder son’s diagnosis at age 9, and frequently writes and speaks publicly about the disorder. Her most recent book is the ADHD coming-of-age memoir, “Mothers and Murderers: A True Story of Love, Lies, Obsession…and Second Chances.” More info at This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. By treating children with ADHD with neurofeedback, we can train the brain to fight off the effects of ADHD in a manner that is not reliant upon medication. Learn more about neurofeedback at

The Drake Institute is among a few medical institutions that have been able to treat neurological disorders using Neurofeedback and Brain Mapping.

For 30 years the Drake Institute has made neurofeedback and biofeedback the centerpiece of its treatment programs. It allows us to gain brain function without side effects, restore normalcy, and reduce or eliminate symptoms. It does not replace any other treatments or medications offered by the Institute. . Although it is the main treatment, we can provide additional counseling or treatment for learning disorders. Because it has been the central treatment for our patients for 30 years, it has enabled the Drake Institute to develop leading edge knowledge and clinical experience in its applications for ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and stress related disorders or diseases. These disorders all share one thing in common: irregular brain function is at the core of them.

It takes time to develop clinical expertise in neurofeedback and biofeedback. Simply put, clinicians gain more clinical expertise and experience if they help more patients. The treatment programs at the Drake Institute have gone through many evolutions of development during the last 30 years as the Institute benefited from its relationships with other leading professionals in the world who helped pioneer this technology.

The Institute continues to acquire new technology and integrate it into its treatment programs. The Drake Institute was a medical facility, which allowed it to apply this technology in a medical practice. Having treated more than 11,000 patients has produced a level of knowledge and clinical competency that could not have been acquired in any other way.

The Drake Institute also believes that qEEG brain mapping can be essential for providing optimal neurofeedback treatment. Only a few Autistic children are able to obtain a brain map. Brain mapping should be done in-house, rather than having someone else do it. Drake's qEEG brainmaps of patients are taken by the clinic and then interpreted by Drake's doctors to develop the neurofeedback protocols. This has been a huge asset. This is far better than an outside service that does not have Drake's vast clinical data.

The Drake Institute's extensive clinical experience in stress management, including depression and anxiety, is another important aspect. Drake's stress biofeedback treatment is highly recommended for both adult ADHD patients as well as adolescents with ADHD.

It is important to have a physician overseeing a treatment program utilizing neurofeedback/biofeedback when there are patients taking medications. Drake provides medical case care, which is the best way to see the whole patient. We understand the connection between neurofeedback and drug reduction. As neurofeedback improves, medications might need to be reduced. It is better to have a physician overseeing the medication monitoring and neurofeedback treatments simultaneously, with an understanding of how they interact.

Lastly, since 70% of ADHD patients have secondary learning disorders, the Drake Institute developed FullCare in order to provide comprehensive treatment for all of the patients' needs not just their ADHD symptoms. It is important to address secondary learning and processing disorders once attention problems have been resolved. Patients will not be able to fully develop their abilities to face life's challenges if they don't.
