How ADHD Affects Your Brain | Harold Koplewicz | Big Think

How ADHD Affects Your Brain
New videos DAILY: k
Big Think Edge offers exclusive video lessons by top thinkers and doers. e
———————————————————————————-
Koplewicz says Attention-Deficit hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is real. The frontal lobes, cerebellums and brains of ADHD patients are markedly different from those who don’t have it.
———————————————————————————-
HAROLD KOPLEWICZ

Dr. Harold Koplewicz, a nationally recognized child and adolescent psychiatrist, is a leading figure in the field. He is a pioneer in the field, a champion for child mental health, as well as a skilled clinician. He is also a pioneer in public education to dispel myths and stigma around children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. Koplewicz was repeatedly named in America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America. He also received New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors” award. In 2006,, he was elected Director of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research. This is the third time that Koplewicz held this position since its founding in 1952.. He is also the founder of the Child Mind Institute.
———————————————————————————-
TRANSCRIPT:

Question: Is there a difference between a normal brain and one with ADHD or not?

Harold Koplewicz: So Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a very misunderstood psychiatric disorder. It’s real. This disorder affects between five and eight percent of the world’s population. It’s not a normal condition. You have children who are more hyperactive and impulsive than others their developmental age. It is a lifetime disorder. This means that the symptoms may look different between children of different ages, such as a preschooler, school-age child, high school student, or adult. However, there is always a consistent pattern of hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity.

In fact, hyperactivity often disappears with age. This symptom disappears when someone is in their late teens or early adulthood. If we can look at ADHD children’s brains, it is clear that they are different from other children. And in fact, an important study was done about 15 years ago that followed kids over a decade who had Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and these were children who had never taken medication. These were children who had met the diagnostic criteria and who were examined at the National Institute of Mental Health. Their parents said that they would never give Ritalin to their kids. They were then compared with a group of normal or typical children of the same age. They found significant differences in the cerebellum and the frontal lobe.

Your executive function is located in the frontal lobe. This is where you can prioritize which items to tackle first. What is the most important thing I need to do today? How can I do that before I tackle item 2, 3, 4, or 5 that are challenging me…as far as my daily tasks go.

The cerebellum is the place where coordination takes place. It’s interesting to note that these children grew up and reached adolescence. This would explain why hyperactivity symptoms seemed to decrease and the frontal lobe appeared smaller than normal.

Question: What are the effects of these drugs on brain imbalances?

Harold Koplewicz – I believe it is important to recognize that our brains are full of neurotransmitters. These brain chemicals move between brain parts and exchange messages.

Dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine are the three major neurotransmitters. And when you have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, you use your dopamine and your norepinephrine faster in your brain than the average person. You may become less attentive, impulsive, or hyperactive if you don’t get enough.

ADHD patients with ADHD have smaller brain centers. These centers are rich in dopamine, and norepinephrine. It’s nice to know that there is a neuroanatomical reason to ensure that all chemicals are equal.

You can’t take serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine and get it to the brain. This is because the blood/brain barrier protects the brain, spinal cord and neurotransmitters. These brain chemicals move in that space. …

What I Want to Say to My Mom, Who “Drugged” Me

Whether (or how) to treat a child with ADHD is an understandably tough decision for many parents. My mom decided to, and faced (as many parents do) judgement for her choices. Here’s what I want to say to her, and every parent who finds themselves accused of “drugging” their children.

My Little Villagers’ response: /

Thank you to my Patreon supporters, for the sake of keeping this video short and shareable I didn’t do my usual intro or wrapup, but I could not have done this without all of you.

By the way, in case anyone is curious — I take Vyvanse now, but I started on Ritalin.

Transcript of video:

What I want to say to my mom, who “drugged” me:

Thank you. Thank you for listening when I told you I was struggling. Thank you for standing up for me when my dad tried to dismiss what I was dealing with as “normal.” I now understand ADHD is highly genetic and it’s likely he felt that way because he probably had ADHD himself.

Thank you for taking me to get a proper evaluation so I understand my brain’s differences and don’t feel like it’s just all my fault. Thank you for taking me to a psychiatrist, month after month, to find a treatment and dose that worked for me. And for taking me back month after month after month after month — I know you were busy, and yet I never ran out of medication because you took the time to take me to every appointment.

Thank you for ignoring the people who judged you. I know there were many.

Thank you for understanding that there was a difference between my sister occasionally forgetting her homework and me losing or forgetting something almost every day. Thank you for understanding that while all children can be fidgety or impulsive or get distracted, I struggled way more than the other kids my age. I now understand it’s because ADHD brains develop differently.

You didn’t know that, you hadn’t done the research I have, but you listened to me when I told you I needed help.

Because of you, I got the treatment I needed, I did better in school, I felt more confident and able to reach my potential. Because of you, I never had to self medicate like so many ADHDers I know. I never sank into depression. I never gave up on myself. I never felt misunderstood. You understood. You believed me.

And when you did, when you took me to a doctor who could explain to me what was happening in my brain, you took away so much shame.

Thanks, mom.

http://adhdinadults.com/ Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can inhibit people from functioning at their highest potential and is often the cause or a contributing factor to problems in a patient's professional and personal life. Robert Tudisco is joined by Lenard Adler, an expert in adult ADHD, to show the benefits that patients get when they are diagnosed and treated.

After his child was diagnosed with ADHD, Tudisco sought treatment. Parents often gain insight into their own behavior after diagnosing ADHD symptoms in children. Adler suggests that adults with ADHD be screened by healthcare professionals if the child has been diagnosed. Tudisco was one of those people. He said that he struggled with time management, multitasking, and was having difficulty completing administrative tasks.

Adult ADHD can also affect personal relationships. Tudisco was concerned about his ability to be a better husband and father, so he sought help. He also learned about ADHD and heard stories from other patients. Tudisco was given a non-stimulant drug that helped him manage ADHD. He has been able to overcome many of the difficulties he faced before his diagnosis.

Adler is the Director of NYU School of Medicine's Adult ADHD Program. Robert Tudisco, Esq. Robert Tudisco, Esq. is the Executive Director for ADHD Coaching, Adult ADHD. Please visit the link for more information about Adult ADHD. Our website with

In case you are curious, I am currently taking Vyvanse, but I started Ritalin.

Transcript of the video:

To my mom who “drugged” and abused me, I’d like to say

We are grateful. Thank you for listening to me when I said I was struggling. You stood up for me, even though my father tried to dismiss the fact that I was having trouble with ADHD as normal. ADHD is highly genetic. I understand that ADHD is likely to be a result of his own experience with ADHD.

Thank you for taking me to a thorough evaluation to help me understand my brain’s differences. I am grateful that you took me to see a psychiatrist every month to help me find the right treatment for me. Thank you for taking me back every month, even though you were busy. I was never short of medication because you took the extra time to bring me to each appointment.

I am grateful that you ignored the people who judged your actions. There were many.

You took me to see a doctor to explain what was going on in my brain.

Thanks, mom.

ADHD Medication - The Right Dose?

featured image

Discussion with Steven Sussman, Ph.D – Child and Adolescent Psychologist Co-Founder of the Child and Teen Success Centers in NY and NJ

https://medbusiness.net/adhd-medication-the-right-dose/

Psychiatrist Dr. Edward Fruitman, M.D., Medical Director of Trifecta Health, explains the differences between ADD/ ADHD Medications: Adderall and Ritalin.

Often Dr. Fruitman is asked" How do you know what medication to choose?" Here is some insight to the thought process behind choosing the right medication for you!

Both Ritalin and Adderall belong in the same stimulant category. Once key factor in choosing is the patient's preference and attitude toward each drug. If a patient doesn't take their medicine, it won't work!

It is also important to know the patient's previous history with each of the drugs. Typically, Dr. Fruitman says, it is best to start on a low dose in an extended release form, and Adderall may be best for motivation purposes, while Ritalin may be a better choice for over-stimulation.

Both of these drugs have proven effective in treating ADD/ADHD. The most important thing to consider while deciding a course of treatment is finding the right dosage.

Bipolar disorder is often very misunderstood. It is often believed that any condition that is unstable can be classified as bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder can be defined as the presence of hypomania or mania. Both bipolar disorder as well as unipolar depression can be characterized by depression. If you're wondering if you have bipolar disorder, Your doctor or therapist should first ask if you have ever experienced a manic episode. Bipolar disorder is defined by mania.

This video also answers the question, "Can your bipolar diagnosis change?

Today's video will explain the difference between hypomania and mania. I'll also answer the question, "Can your diagnosis change between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2?" This video will help you understand mania, but it won't help you diagnose. To be assessed if you suspect you might have bipolar disorder you should consult a doctor.
