I often get asked by doctors, medical students etc, why would you give stimulants in ADHD when people are already so hyperactive? ADHD is a fascinating condition, and the diagnosis is so important as getting on the right treatment can revolutionize a persons life.
ADHD is characterised by inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive symptoms, and to understand why stimulants help, we need to talk about the role of dopamine and noradrenaline in a part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. Psychiatrists love the prefrontal cortex. On this video I’ll explain some neurobiology and then how stimulants help to treat inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
