This belief, also known by the Theory of Developmental Delay (or simply ADHD theory), was why doctors and insurance companies refused to approve ADHD drugs for children until they were adults. The American Medical Association (AMA) and American Psychiatric Association (APA) now recognize ADHD in adults.
