ADHD and making friends

featured image

People with ADHD often struggle with social skills — and some even experience social anxiety. This can lead to shame and self-doubt over past interactions, like “Did I talk too much?” or “I shouldn’t have overshared like that….” If you catch yourself in this headspace, try to be kind to yourself and remember that you’re not alone. Social skills can improve with practice and patience.

We who run this channel are married to each other and are both ADHD brains - adult ones ;) We are still trying to understand what this means! This is an excellent video that summarizes this "dis-order" called ADHD.

Thomas E. Brown, PhD, discusses ADHD diagnosis, ADHD symptoms, available ADHD treatment options, and ADHD medication.

As our expert says, ADD/ADHD is not a behavior problem. It has far more to do with the brain’s management system. Remember, ADHD has nothing to do with how smart a person is.

Living with ADHD

featured image

By Mack | Ready to “wear it out loud?” Merch store open, SHOP NOW: | Subscribe: | Record your story @ or our iPhone app for a chance to get animated. Comment, like, share this story.

ADHD stinks! That mostly sums it up for Mack, not completely, but mostly.

It’s hard to focus and concentrate, and so at school Mack’s grades started falling because she would find herself paying attention to a ton of things that weren’t important, or at least that didn’t have much to do with what they were studying. For instance, in Math, instead of paying attention to the teacher and the work on the board, she would be transfixed by a tiny crumb sitting on the edge of her desk.

Mack has had ADHD for as long as she can remember, so she figures she’s had it since she was born. And, it has also been really hard for as long as she can remember. Sometimes people think she’s weird but she’s just Mack, a kid with ADHD.

Living with ADHD comes with its own side effects, like depression, and anxiety, and she’s been living with those since she was in 4th grade. Now she’s in 8th. ADHD treatment also comes with a lot of pills and medications. Mack has been taking as many as five different pills every day for her entire life. That’s a lot of medicine.

Now she takes three pills a day: one antidepressant, one medication to help her stay focused, and one pill to help her sleep at night. See, ADHD also sometimes brings on insomnia, which is difficulty either falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early.

Mack has had insomnia since she was in 3rd grade, and at one point it got so bad that she couldn’t sleep at all – she stayed awake for four days straight – she kept falling asleep in school, literally passing out from being so tired. One day she passed out during recess and opened her eyes to find all of her friends standing over her, staring at her.

In Mack’s opinion, ADHD is one of the hardest conditions to live with that there is. She’s still learning to deal with it. It comes with so many side effects, and living with ADHD just makes you really self conscious. People who don’t know her probably think she is really weird, especially because when she is feeling really overwhelmed with anxiety she finds she has to find a quiet place, curl up in a tight little ball, and not talk with anyone. And that can go on for up to an hour or two before she starts to feel better.

It’s been really tough living with ADHD, and Mack’s great hope is that she can learn to manage it and overcome the effects and side effects as an adult. BUT, the one thing Mack knows for sure is that living with ADHD, and fighting to overcome it, has made her a stronger and better person, while at the same time, of course, it also is responsible for the parts of her she could do without.

It’s hard for her to explain – Living with ADHD is definitely a burden, but in a weird way it’s also a special thing to have – it boosts your creativity and imagination. It has helped to shape who Mack is today and she is more than okay with that! She has ADHD and she’s still learning to deal with it.

ADHA is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. They both relate to the same chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. Concentration can be extremely difficult with ADHD and ADD. Diagnosis and treatment from a Doctor are necessary. 11 million people have ADHD.

“How to Win Friends and Influence People is the title of possibly the most famous book of the twentieth century. It is also one of the books most routinely ridiculed by people who think they are clever. Why on earth, these people mutter, would an intelligent person need help with something as basic as that? And in any case, good people don’t need to win friends: they should already have them. Certainly they shouldn’t try to ‘influence’ them: they just need to say witty, intelligent things. But these were not the assumptions of a man far cleverer and more important than intellectual history has been prepared to allow…”

https://medbusiness.net/i-give-my-friends-clinical-depression-by-winning-shotgun-farmers/

Hi, my name is Seb. I’m a former #SocialAnxietyDisorder sufferer, the host of a popular podcast show (Social Anxiety Solutions) and a social confidence coach.

Since 2009, I’ve helped hundreds of #sociallyanxious clients feel #calm, #comfortable and at ease socially.

I’m in (symptomless) self-quarantine due to the #CoronaVirus. And I got inspired by people like the quarantined Italians singing from their balcony. And well, I’ve got a lot of time on my hands now…

Anyway, I decided I could help by creating a free 30 day Social Confidence Challenge for all of you who suffer from #socialanxiety.

Because what a perfect opportunity this is to reduce your social anxiety!

Now the mainstream belief is that the only way to do this is to #ChangeYourThoughts, and force yourself to #FaceYourFears

Since this didn’t work for me (I’ll share more in the challenge) I had to find #AlternativeWays. And eventually, I created a different approach.

My approach builds on the foundation of #traditional #WesternPsychology, but adds a very important component:

Addressing the #EMOTIONAL SIDE of your social anxiety issue.

While I will help you change your mindset, and while facing your fears is included, I go about it in a much #LessStressful, and far more #EffectiveWay.

How?

You face your fears internally. And then you #release them.

For this, we use a #powerful, #scientificallyproven to be #effective #EmotionalReleaseTechnique. Details about the #technique and how to use it to #OvercomeSocialAnxiety are beyond the scope of this brief message.

----------------------
This video is a generalized summary to illustrate that social anxiety is a program that your brain runs based upon perception. And that the perception is governed by beliefs. And that these beliefs can be changed. Once you change the beliefs responsible for the perception of danger, social anxiety is gone. There is none. Zero.

Many people have asked me about the ending of this video. "Great, but it's not that easy! How do you change your beliefs?! You can't just do that". And they are right.

A belief is a thought or an idea you're emotionally connected to, as a result of conditioning and painful life experiences. And just "changing your thoughts" won't work. Saying to yourself "I am good enough" won't do that.

Social anxiety isn't a logical problem. And therefore You need to address things on an emotional level in order to have your beliefs shift completely. Once you do, you can completely overcome your social anxiety. I bet that's hard to believe for you if you've been struggling for a long time (and, pretty everyone has been struggling for a long time) and you've tried things. But what if what you tried hasn't been the right approach for you? Or, what if that's only been mildly helpful, and there are ways that are far more effective?

Until I found EFT - a silly-looking technique to rapidly release excessive negative emotions (you know, the shame, insecurity, worthlessness, fear, anxiety etc that we struggle with so much). That was the technique that made the difference. It has then been a long path of trying to figure out how to apply that technique to overcome my social anxiety because mine was complex and severe. But thanks to the help of EFT tapping and some brilliant therapist I've now been anxiety-free for years.

I also have video testimonials of former clients who overcame their social anxiety. They've become so at ease with themselves, and they don't care anymore what others think that they're willing to share.

There's really a way out of it. Don't give up, suspend your disbelief, break your skepticism by giving this a try.

ADHD and Friendships: How To Play the Social Game

featured image

The way ADHD brains develop can put us out of step with our childhood peers, leaving us feeling awkward, left out and with social anxiety that can follow us into adulthood. This article will discuss my personal experiences and provide simple solutions.

note — One of the Brains mentioned that peers and the Internet aren’t always the most reliable sources of information. This is true. Cultural differences exist and biases such as racism and sexism can be present. Also, the best advice might not work for everyone.

I hope that we can sort through all of the information and then decide if it is right for us.

In any event, if I had known what to expect at a sleepover, what it takes to be a good host, or what the appropriate manner is for first dates, I would have been a lot better prepared to handle the situations that I was in.

ADHD 🧠 = Different? My Experience Growing Up šŸ˜‘

Are you a Social Misfit because of your cognitive condition? Do you experience a similar world of being the odd one out? We all have different tastes and upbringings, but I believe ADHD can make us unique in various ways.

Calvin Butts openly discusses his journey with ADHD. He talks about his determination to prove doctors wrong and turn his weakness into his strength. He revolves his talk around the importance of owning, adapting, and leveraging one's own lifestyle. Calvin's passions outside the office include: playing golf, spending time with his family, networking, and building relationships. He would like to touch base on the topic of "Being Your Authentic Self." He believes that you have to believe in yourself and really own who you are. Calvin grew up with ADHD and was able to go against doctors' suggestions and end up achieving so much more. Now he is a part of multiple boards, multiple businesses, multiple organizations, and has even started multiple businesses. Calvin found that if he embraced the need to be involved in several things, he could find success and find a good balance. He encourages everyone to be themselves and also understand who they are. He believes that everyone has a unique diversity to bring to an organization, school, corporation, and community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at x
