Behavior Therapy for ADHD | Child Psychology

featured image

Watch more How to Understand Child Psychology videos: y

When a child has been diagnosed with ADHD, the first course of treatment is to try to change some of the challenging or functionally impairing behaviors for the child. Some of these behaviors include the child drifting off and not paying attention, or maybe a child that can’t sit still long enough to focus on homework or on classroom assignments. It’s really important to have the intervention of parents, teachers and the whole school team on board to help modify some of these behaviors.

For instance, a teacher might help the child learn how to self-monitor their own actions and provide a little incentive plan to help a child remember not to interrupt, but to raise their hand. It’s important to recognize that a lot of the behaviors, or the more negative behaviors of ADHD, can be modified and shaped. And the child can learn to control them. Working with a good health care professional, a child psychologist, or a social worker can definitely help parents come up with an individualized behavior treatment plan to help their child’s ADHD symptoms. So these are just some of the behavioral strategies that can be used in decreasing ADHD symptoms.

Many families find medication to be an option for ADHD symptoms. To help alleviate ADHD symptoms, you should contact your child’s psychiatrist, psychologist, or pediatric neurologist. It is important to meet with this professional to discuss the positive outcomes, side effects, and how your child can take these medications. For ADHD, stimulant medication and non-stimulant medications are the most common. Ritalin, Dexadrine and Adderal are some of the most common stimulant medications. Some of these medications are very long-lasting and others are short-acting. Your doctor may recommend that you use a combination of some or all of these medications to help your child. Sometimes, children are unable to tolerate side effects from stimulant medication. Your doctor may recommend a non-stimulant. Stratera is a well-known brand of medication. Parents should be aware that if your child is taking medication, it’s important to keep in close contact with their doctor. Make sure you let your doctor know if there is any change in your child’s behavior. Teachers and other professionals who work with your child can be a great source of information. They will let you know if your child’s symptoms are improving or if they have other concerns. There are many medications that can be used to treat ADHD. Parents should consider the information we have provided and talk with their doctor about possible treatment options.

Watch the Trilogy:
Listen to SAPPHIRE: 9

I don’t like being told what to do. I never have. So many people have tried to make me ashamed of myself for that. But I think that my untamable heart is precisely what makes me so thrilled and proud to be me.

Let me give you some examples...

In a world where people make money off of a woman hating her body, I have made the wildly rebellious decision to fully accept and love my body as it is.

In a society where women are taught to depend on men in high ranking positions of power to give them their “big break,” instead, I will choose to fund my own dream, in newer, more creative ways, with no one’s permission but my own.

In an industry (music), where men in charge make money off of women being one-dimensional, I have decided that I refuse to fit in a box and will do everything that I want to do; whether that means writing my own songs, producing my own music, playing multiple instruments, dancing… whatever inspires me. No matter how uncomfortable it makes them. They want me to quiet my opinion, change my hair color, dress in the acceptable outfit, and sing the songs they’ve chosen for me to sing. Instead, I’m going to be louder, bolder, wear what I want, play the music that I wrote and produced, and not worry about what anyone has to say about it.

I find that we, as women are constantly being told to squeeze ourselves into boxes in order to make people feel more comfortable with us. But I wasn’t designed for that. And neither were you.

What if we weren’t put here, on this planet to shrink? But instead to expand, and become the highest versions of ourselves? What if we were put here to become the most fearless versions of ourselves that we could be? On my Instagram, the first question that comes up in my bio is this: What would you do if you weren’t afraid? I want to know that from you. What would you do, if you weren’t afraid of anything? Of what people would think? Of failure? Of whatever it is that is holding you back? Let me know right here…

In all of my music, I push myself to rise to the challenge of that question: What would you do if you weren’t afraid? I switch up my genres because it scares me. I wear outfits that scare me. I build shows and media pieces and art that scares me to build. Because it is in facing our fears that we become great, and refusing to fit in boxes that we break new glass ceilings.

I wrote this song, Adderall, about being abused and manipulated by someone who was trying to make me accept that I belonged in a box. (You can listen to it right here: They hoped that I would shrink, because that is what made them feel more comfortable. Instead of encouraging me to rise and conquer my fears to become my greatest self, they asked me to lesser myself to be more palatable for the world. And that’s what happens to so many of us. But I’m not accepting it. And neither should you.

What do you think? Do you feel like you can identify with the pressure to fit in a box? What would you do if you weren’t afraid? Are you already doing it? Are there steps you can take to be braver, bolder, and wilder in your life? Send me a message and/or comment below!

Love you so much. -EMM

ADDERALL LYRICS

VERSE 1
Look at you
Looking for
A way out
From what you have done
Once again
You have played the victim and
I'm the villain

PRE CHORUS
You point your trigger finger
And paint the picture like it's me, me
And as your buried deeper
You bite the hand that tries to reach,
Reach
So

CHORUS
Blame it on the cocaine
Blame it on the adderall
Blame it on the champagne
Just don't blame me
Blame it on the cocaine
Blame it on the alcohol
Blame it on your pain
Just don't blame me

VERSE 2
Here we are
On the other side of it all,
I put up a wall
Still you try
To keep climbing into my life
But I still feel the knife

Pre Chorus
Chorus

POST CHORUS
Don’t blame me, ah
Don’t blame me
Don’t blame me, ah
Don’t blame me, yeah!

BRIDGE
You'd blame it on the way I talk
You'd blame it on the way I dress
You'd blame me when things went wrong
You'd blame me when you made the mess
Tell everybody it's my fault
Talk about me to your friends
You can keep runnin your mouth
But You'll never ruin my reputation

Chorus
Post Chorus x2

In this episode, we’re meeting Jason Boughn, a life coach specializing in tools to address ADHD. He also welcomes neurodiversity of all types and neurotypical people! Jason has a comfortable way of evoking a person’s story, getting to the heart of the matter most relevant to the storyteller. The stories we tell ourselves and the ones created to fit in better with others are affirmations which shape our reality. Jason’s focus is exploring and reframing our personal story to create a beautiful life experience.

In this episode, Jason shares his story about his brain injury and how it has impacted his life, and how the manifestations of ADHD are similar traumatic brain injuries (TBI). You’ll also hear about how Jason experiences emotion, not fitting in, acting, and his passion for learning.

Then, you’ll also hear about his journey through relationships, his compassion throughout those relationships, how he overcame homelessness, and what led to that chapter in his life.

What Are Medications for ADHD? | Child Psychology

featured image

Watch more How to Understand Child Psychology videos: y

For many families medication is a necessary option to treat the symptoms of ADHD. In this instance, you would contact your pediatrician, your child’s psychologist or your pediatric neurologist to help abate some of the symptoms of ADHD. It’s really important to sit down with this professional and ask questions about positive outcome, about potential side effects and how well your child can tolerate these medications. Typically for ADHD, the medications of choice are stimulant medications and non-stimulant medications. Some of the more common stimulant medications include Ritalin, and Dexadrine, and Adderal, or Focalin or Vyvanse. And some of these are long lasting long acting medications and some are very short acting. Often, your medical doctor will use some of these medications in combination to best help your child. Sometimes children can’t tolerate the side effects of the stimulant medications, so your medical professional may suggest something that’s a non-stimulant. Stratera is a popular brand of medication. One thing that I always tell parents that’s very important, if you’re trying medication with your child, stay in very close contact with your medical doctor. And make sure if there are any changes in your child’s behavior or symptoms, that you immediately let them know. Also, teachers and other adults that are working with your child are very good sources of information to let you know whether your child’s symptoms have actually improved or if there are some other issues that need to be addressed. While there are many medication options to treat ADHD, it’s really important that parents consider what we’ve said here and discuss the treatment strategies with their medical doctor.
