ABOUT THE SERIES: Depression in children looks completely different than it does in adults – and it leads to complex mental health problems later in life. The good news is that with the education that this series provides, it can be properly treated, managed, and even prevented. Psychiatrist Dr. Domenick Sportelli kicks off this 6-episode series by explaining what constitutes depression in children: when does a “bad temper” or agitation in your child signal actual clinical depression? Dr. Dom then dives into the causes: is depression in children caused by genetics, parenting styles, the environment, or something else? He breaks down the 8 major signs of depression in children you need to know, crucial support strategies that parents should use during the screening process for childhood depression, and how to navigate the tricky road of finding the right depression treatment for your child. He even enlightens parents on some of the latest cutting-edge research on depression treatments for children. Dr. Dom ends the series with the tried-and-true crucial strategies for preventing depression relapse in your child. These strategies will ensure that you’re setting your child up for successful maintenance of their mental wellness as they grow older. This is your parenting toolbox for tackling depression in children early.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a powerful form of psychotherapy that can be self-practiced and has proven through extensive psychological research to be incredibly affective for anxiety reduction. This practical, hands-on approach can change your negative thoughts and behavior. This video will show you how to use CBT as self-therapy to reduce anxiety, depression and stress. It can also be used to improve your mental health.
The American Psychological Association states that cognitive behavioral therapy is effective in treating a variety of mental illnesses, including anxiety disorders, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, severe mental illness, eating disorders, and marital problems. http://www.gozen.com - Fear has a purpose: Self-preservation. When there is real, objective danger staring you in the face, fear is what kicks you into the famous "flight-or-fight" mode. This quick chemical response from the older part of the brain has helped both animals and humans survive for millennia.
What about anxiety? Well, did you know humans are the only species on the planet capable of thinking critically about the future. Pretty cool, huh? The downside is that humans are also the only species capable of triggering that same stress response when there is no immediate danger.
Get this -- you can be sitting peacefully at home and one simple worried thought about the future can throw your entire body into flight-or-fight mode. Remember, this is a response which pumps chemicals throughout your body, preparing you to escape danger. It's the reason your heart races, palms get sweaty, stomach aches etc. -- even when nothing is actually threatening your life! This is anxiety.
Fortunately, your thoughts don't have to be threats. Learn more about how to relieve your anxiety at m

This video will show you what you can do to help your ADHD. This is a follow up to a video I did it on executive function. That video is What is Executive Function - How it Relates to ADHD Y
When it comes to non-medication ways to manage your ADHD symptoms, we can break it down into three domains: time management, organization and planning.
People with ADHD typically have trouble estimating how long things will take and adjusting their schedules accordingly. As a result you may be frequently late to things or this can even affect your ability to finish things because you don’t take into account how long it should take. With ADHD, the loss of time is a cumulative effect.
Step one to master this time management skill is to have constant access to timepieces.
Start by getting a watch and having an adequate number of clocks visible to you in areas where you spend time.
Then create your time log using your watch and your clocks. That may take you several days to do. And start with the big things you do like getting ready for work, chores, eating dinner, getting ready for bed. This list can also include things that you do at work so you can have a better understanding of how you use your time at work.
This it’s to help you appreciate Time.
Lastly you get a daily and a weekly or monthly planner. You’re going to use the daily planner to track your appointments, obligations and to do list. And you’re going to consult the planner twice a day. In the morning to appreciate the scope of your day and in the evening to reflect on how your day transpired and review what you've got going on tomorrow. It also gives you a chance to reschedule things you didn’t complete.

People living during the Great Depression didn’t sign up for dust storms, and she didn’t sign up for ADHD. Medications are an important part of the treatment toolkit for many patients with ADHD. They may not work for all people, have side effects, or are not an option for those with comorbid conditions. A holistic treatment plan for ADHD is needed for each child. It must address the symptoms and take into consideration the child's interactions with their family, friends, and school. A comprehensive treatment plan should include a variety of important interventions that can be used with or without medication to help your child succeed.

Galaxy Brain - Episode 1 - Social Anxiety (AnxietyCanada.com)
Everyone struggles with social anxiety sometimes, even aliens! Drexal is no exception, which is why he reaches out to his friendly computer to talk about his fears.
Watch episode 2 of Galaxy Brain right here:
/>
-----------
Drexal is an alien living on a remote moon base, which means he has to connect with his friends and peers online—just like so many of us Earthlings are doing now!
It can be tough to connect to other people, especially when you feel anxious in social situations. Luckily, Drexal has a pretty smart computer sidekick who explains that everyone feels social anxiety sometimes and usually things turn out just fine.
You are not alone in your struggle, remember that it’s normal to feel anxiety, especially as the world around us changes. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from someone you trust or find a friend to talk to about your feelings, like Drexal the alien does.
Share Drexal’s video series with other people you know and see if any of them feel the same way. It’s a fun way to share your feelings and maybe help your friends out as well! It’s important to talk about how you feel.
► Have you felt scared or anxious about talking to friends and classmates in person or online?
► Do you worry that you might say something embarrassing?
► Can you think of anyone else who may feel the same way you do?
► Who is someone you trust that you could talk about your feelings with?
-------
Stay tuned for more of Galaxy Brain, featuring Drexal the alien! Watch as he talks about his anxiety with his computer sidekick and they come up with ideas to help aliens (and humans) express their feelings.

Galaxy Brain is a pre-teen and teen animated series focusing on topics such as social anxiety, health anxiety, contamination OCD and more. With humour and heart, Galaxy Brain normalizes anxiety in an entertaining way and encourages seeking help from a trusted parent, teacher or friend.
As a parent, educator or health care provider, it can be difficult to talk to pre-teens and teens about mental health, especially during the pandemic. Anxiety Canada has created the Galaxy Brain, Caretoons animated series to open the door to communication, allowing youth the understand that they aren’t alone in their feelings and that talking about their fears can be very helpful.
Many youth don’t realize that what they are feeling is anxiety, as we all face new situations daily during the pandemic and beyond. Being able to name their anxieties, recognize symptoms of anxiety, and understand the impact it has on their lives, are important steps that you can help them with.
Keep the conversation going! Let kids know that it’s ok to talk about their feelings and give them a safe space to express themselves. It can help if you also discuss your own anxieties so that they know they are not alone.

Despite the difficulties of adapting to university life, Rovena discovered that her brain is not compatible with the existing systems. She will discuss how neurodiverse minds can help improve education and other aspects in society. Rovena does not consider ADHD a disease to be treated but rather a gift that encourages creativity, positive thinking and inspires ideas for a better future. Rovena is currently a BSc. Rovena is currently enrolled at the University of Alberta as a Neuroscience Honours Undergraduate Student. She pursues her passion for learning about the fascinating and complex human brain. As a neurodivergent student, she shares her experiences and insights about society. She graduated as Valedictorian in 2020 and was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal, Science & Technology award from EPSB. Her ability to perform throughout high school was unquestioned. This was until she began to struggle greatly in her first year at University and was diagnosed as having Generalized Anxiety Disorder. She was later diagnosed with severe mixed ADHD the next year. She co-founded Step Up YEG, a racial justice non profit organization as she struggled with her neurodivergent diagnosis and the treatment. CASA Youth Council also made her a mental healthcare advocate. She gave presentations to schools about mental health and was part of the planning team for a mental fair. Rovena is now the promotions lead for community education. Rovena’s superpower is ADHD, which helps her make an impact in the world. She prioritizes inclusion and raising awareness for neurodiverse communities in all of her opportunities, which includes this TEDx talk. MY MISSION
To spread awareness about nonhyperactive ADHD (what i call "Hidden ADHD") in order to help those who are suffering. They should know what they can do to help. They should know they are not lazy, unmotivated, or willfully irresponsible. They should know that they have the potential to realize their full potential and live the life of their dreams.
