Concerta Methylphenidate can cause a lot of sleep problems. I have experienced sleep problems because of Concerta many times. The crucial thing about Concerta is the time you take it. If you take Concerta too late during the day, it will ruin your sleep. I personally have a rule with Concerta, I don't take it after 12-13.00, because otherwise, it will affect my sleep in a negative way.

How does exercise help manage symptoms of ADHD in children?

For children with ADHD and their parents, it can be difficult to manage symptoms with medication or psychotherapy alone. Research suggests that exercise can help manage symptoms of ADHD as well as improve general mental and physical wellbeing in children.

In this video we outline the neuroscience of ADHD and how exercise can be used as adjunctive therapy to help alleviate symptoms in children. We will present recommended exercise guidelines and a sample exercise plan that can be used to experience the benefits.

This video was made by McMaster students Arthiga Arumugarasan, Kruti Bhakta and Divya Tamilselvan in collaboration with the McMaster Demystifying Medicine Program.

The double-edged sword: ADHD and impulsivity | Kimberly Quinn | TEDxAmoskeagMillyard

featured image

There are oodles of research on ADHD in young people. However, there is a dearth of research on the ways ADHD affects seasoned adults and the impact this medically-defined disorder has on their lives. Dr. Kimbery Quinn helps us better understand the ways that ADHD affects adults, the issues they might face in relationships and life, and ways to reframe and help support those we know with this condition. As a professor at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, Dr. Kimberly Quinn teaches cognitive and positive psychology. She’s also a workshop facilitator, who frequently speaks on a variety of topics related to positive psychology, well-being, trauma-informed education, and mindfulness training for schools (students and/or faculty), human services agencies, and business organizations. Her recent research is on the influence of social media on the well-being of college students.

Prior to teaching, Kimberly was a child and family therapist, specializing in working with those with ADHD. She said, “ADHD is a misnomer: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder should be ASHD (Attention Surplus High-energy Difference). ADHD is also a gift, due to one’s enhanced ability for divergent thinking – creativity and innovation.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. As much as my meds help me, it’s a battle to remember to do all the things I need to do to be able to take them: sign up for health insurance, pay my bill, make a doctor appointment, GO to that appointment, get my prescription, find a pharmacy that can fill it, remember to pick it up before it closes, remember to bring my ID so they’ll let me...

So when I miss a step and find myself without my meds, it’s easy to wonder...are they really necessary?

This is what happened when I forgot to pay my health insurance, stopped taking my medication for two weeks and tried to learn how to live without it.

Please share -- because the stigma is real, and no one should have to feel ashamed for getting the treatment they need just because their disorder is mental rather than physical, invisible rather than obvious.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s time we acknowledge that.

*NOTE-- I do not recommend going off medication without a doctor's supervision. A medical professional should be accessible to troubleshoot problems. If you can't reach your doctor, talk to a pharmacist.

Tintin, Impulsivity, & Me

I had always thought of myself as a shy, cautious fellow. Careful. Overly averse to risk, rejection, or danger. But the fact is, at certain times in my life I’ve taken huge risks–quitting an interesting, secure, teaching position to try and make a living doing comedy for example. Or, creating a humor-filled documentary on a controversial mental health diagnosis, despite not being a doctor and never having made a documentary.

And then there are the less ‘life-changing’, but to me, equally memorable moments of spontaneity. Here’s the story of one act of impulsivity that turned out better than I could have imagined. A lesson in seizing opportunities, but also being prepared to make them happen.

I have a mind that never stops. Restless. Scattered. Mental leaps. Lateral thinking. The monkey mind chattering away. Which is why I practice mindful meditation. Just focusing on the here and now, focusing on my breath. Letting thoughts go. But as fast as one thought goes a dozen more are shouting for my attention...
