Wishing you could turn off anxiety like a switch? It might be possible.

3:43 What I’ve noticed in people with anxiety
4:04 How to stop anxiety

Today we’re going to talk about anxiety and how to turn off anxiety like a switch. The term anxiety comes from the Latin word “angere” which means “to strangle.”

An interesting book called “Autonomic Nerves” describes fight or flight as: “The flight or fight reaction is a physiological response to a real or perceived threat to one’s safety. Depending on the nature of the threat, the person either mounts a defense (fight), or attempts to escape from a threat (flight). Both fight or flight require sudden vigorous muscle action.”

What having anxiety feels like:

1. Racing heart
2. Sweating
3. Shaking
4. Throat constricted
5. Breathing changes
6. Blurry vision/dizziness
7. Nausea
8. Irritation
9. Worry
10. Poor concentration
11. Mind goes blank
12. Focus on the negative
13. Sleeplessness

I’ve noticed many people with anxiety have a poor diet filled with stimulants. In many cases, they also seem to be depleted of vitamin B1.

How to control anxiety:

1. Probiotics
2. B-vitamins (especially B1)
3. Magnesium
4. Avoid environmental triggers
5. Adaptogens

322 | A World Without ADHD With Kirsten Milliken

featured image

Boredom is the mother of creativity. Eric, his guest, and Dr. Kirsten Milliken, discuss how to keep your children busy in social distancing and having fun at the grocery shop.

Dr. Milliken, a licensed clinical psychologist and ADHD coach, is the author of PLAYDHD. Permission to play…A prescription for adults with ADHD. With her two children and Perry, she lives in Portland, Maine. She is a sufferer of ADHD. She often jokes and says half-seriously that if it’s not enjoyable, it’s probably not worth doing. Kirsten is a Coach and psychologist who has focused her efforts on teaching clients the importance of play in all its forms.

Eric and Kirsten talk about the World Without ADHD project, the reasons it is important to her, and the book that she is writing. Kirsten talks about how she feels guilty about making money while others are in crisis. She also mentions that her partner is renovating an old RV to keep busy during the pandemic.

Eric and Kirsten discuss their favourite board games and arcade games. Kristen talks about her inflatable pink unicorn costume she wore to the grocery store for PPE, and the reactions she receives. If you want to participate in the World Without ADHD project, please submit artwork, written word, or stories to www.worldwithoutadhd.com, and if they like it, we will showcase it in the book and online. Kirsten suggests that you use your boredom as a creative outlet and submit your entries by the July 1 deadline.

You’ll learn: [01: 37] Welcome back to the show, Kirsten [04: 10] Kirsten shares a new project she launched called World Without ADHD. [05: 49] Would you like to imagine a world without ADHD? [08: 23] Do you think ADHD holds you back? [11: 33] Eric speaks about the virtual open mics on Zoom that he has been doing. [13: 42] Kirsten shares the reason they started this project. [16: 24] Kirsten chats about needing people to submit a piece of art or written words to compete to publish their work in the book they are writing. [26: 15] Kirsten shares that if you want to participate in the project, go to the website www.worldwithoutADHD.com [29: 21] What kind of writing do you do besides writing books? [30: 14] Kirsten speaks about rehabbing a classic RV. [31: 59] Kirsten shares how she has fun at the grocery store in her pink rainbow unicorn costume. [34: 51] She talks about her baby head garden that comes out in the spring. [40: 50] Kirsten chats about being in the pink uniform costume and the response she gets at the grocery store. [42: 31] The due date for submission for World Without ADHD book is July 1, 2020, but get it in as soon as possible. [44: 06] Kirsten, do you have a story you can share that you wrote? [47: 05] Kirsten says that she believes play is one of the real natural anecdotes to ADHD challenges. [49: 03] Eric discusses the board game Catch Phrase. [ 49: 55] Kirsten talks about her childhood arcade favorite. [51: 00] Use your boredom to be creative! [51: 25] Thank you so much for being on the show! There is a new call for immediate action on so-called "lifestyle use" of ADHD drugs. Nearly 4.5 percent of Americans suffer from the condition. This is lower than the prevalence for children. Millions more adults could be using Ritalin or Adderall to solve everyday problems. Dr. Holly Phillips is on "CBS This Morning", to discuss dangerous side effects.

The past few years have been tumultuous, worrying, and depressing. Events, both global, career-wise, and personal, have challenged my normally upbeat mood. While I've felt depressed at points, I know it's different from a diagnosis of Clinical Depression.

Been there. Done that. More than once. Not fun.

If the past few years have been a struggle for you too, you may be wondering what are the symptoms that it's full-blown Depression? To keep things positive, here are 10 signs it's NOT Depression. (Vote For Pedro)

Am I depressed?
Several patrons have asked about the difference between natural sadness and full-blown depression, so what is the difference?

Depression is classified as a mood disorder as in clinically depressed, meaning you’re seeing a doctor at a clinic and you’ve received a reliable diagnosis of depression. It’s to the point where you are suffering, but here’s the thing you may not realize that you are suffering.

Depression can come on so slowly so gradually you don’t even notice what’s happening. Now to be clear I am not a doctor although I did play a nurse in a Frantics comedy skit, my bedside manner was yeah so so.

So at points in my life I have been down, sad, feeling kind of depressed, for any number of reasons, good reasons. Usually.

I’ve also been clinically depressed a few times so I have some first-hand experience or first head experience.

Now to make sure that I’m not talking through my hat I avoid wearing hats and I consulted a list of depression symptoms from sources that I trust.

Symptoms of Depression
Symptoms of depression can include:

Trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
Fatigue
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness
Pessimism and hopelessness
Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or sleeping too much
Crankiness
Restlessness
Loss of interest in things once pleasurable, including sex
Overeating, or appetite loss
Aches, pains, headaches, or cramps that won’t go away
Digestive problems that don’t get better, even with treatment
Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
Suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts
*Source WebMD

The lists of depression symptoms are fairly consistent that’s what I found, they don’t vary much from site to site. That said I found these lists flat, even kind of abstract, when you’re depressed you’re not thinking or feeling things in a clear balanced way so you could read any one of these symptoms and go “um yeah, I don’t know, um sort of, I hadn’t noticed” they can seem ungrounded, so let’s ground the symptoms in a real life experience one that we can all share as human beings, The Queen’s Gambit.

Now in 2020 this amazing Netflix series about an orphan who becomes a chess prodigy garnered 60 million views in one month, that’s like half the population of the world… okay it’s one percent less than… it’s still it’s impressive.

If you haven’t seen it I’ll avoid spoilers but the sequence on the planet mars was amazing and who knew Khloe Kardashian could act, huh. If you missed it feel free to substitute a new program you love because you might be watching this later, so maybe it’ll be Sharknado 5 the dust devil’s revenge or Napoleon Dynamite 2, I want a sequel, sorry.

Also since depression only ever affects a percentage of the population and even for most of us who have experienced it the depression tends to come in bouts. Most of my life I’ve been happy and hopeful I’ll be you know a little anxious and scattered and worried all the time but it’s not there forever.

So here are 10 signs that you’re not depressed because most of us aren’t depressed most of the time.

[Intro]
Bitch!
Corvette, Corvette
Hop in a motherfucking jet like that
[?] really think you could [?] like that
They was like, "Popp, why you walk like that? Why you talk like that? Why you walk like that?"

[Chorus]
I'm off a Addy, I'm up, I don't got no time to relax, time to relax
I turn a two to a four, and I turn a five to a stack, five to a stack
I was just down in the bottom, talking the back of the back
I got this shit out the mud, but they don't wanna talk about that

[Verse 1]
Keep it a stack
Know that we exing you out if you be moving too false
And that's a fact
Niggas keep talking 'bout looking for me
But them niggas capping, they know where I'm at
If I ain't on Norris, then I'm on the V, 11-G to be exact
If I ain't on Norris, then I'm on the V, 11-G to be exact
Fuck all thе opps for real, yeah, I'm dissing you, uh
I drop a bag on your head just to gеt rid of you, uh
Bitch, I ain't ducking no action, you gon' get rid of who?
Me and Tay sliding on niggas and we got missiles too

[Chorus]
I'm off a Addy, I'm up, I don't got no time to relax, time to relax
I turn a two to a four, and I turn a five to a stack, five to a stack
I was just down in the bottom, talking the back of the back
I got this shit out the mud, but they don't wanna talk about that

[Verse 2]
I got this shit out the dirt but they don't wanna talk about this, uh
Niggas was sending them threats
Now they all resting in piss, resting in shit
Fuck them niggas I made, but they just won't admit it
Ungrateful ass shit
Even if I do die, niggas gon' slide, uh, you gon' get hit
I took a sip of that lean, that shit had me trippin'
But I wasn't dippin'
Tears running down my face 'cause I seen all my niggas
Wish it was different
I fucked this bitch named CeCe, she tried to say I ain't
Earn yo listen
Pussy was trash for real, sometimes I wish I never did hit it

[Chorus]
I'm off a Addy, I'm up, I don't got no time to relax, time to relax
I turn a two to a four, and I turn a five to a stack, five to a stack
I was just down in the bottom, talking the back of the back

ADHD is often left undiagnosed in women and girls for a multitude of reasons, both social and scientific. Many people still believe ADHD is a problem that affects only boys. Julia Hearne shares her story and discusses how reducing stigma surrounding ADHD can increase the number of girls diagnosed and treated. Julia Hearne, a New Jersey high school senior, is an example of what it means to be a high school senior. She is passionate about eliminating stigma surrounding mental health. She hopes to spread her message in the hope that it will encourage conversations about neurodiversity. Boredom is the mother of creativity. Eric and Dr. Kirsten Milliken, your host, discuss ways to keep your children and yourself busy with social distancing and having fun at the grocery shop.

Kirsten is a psychologist and coach who focuses on teaching her clients the importance of play in all its forms.

Kirsten says to use your boredom to get creative and submit your entries before the July 1, 2020 deadline.
