Using Trace Minerals and Plant Extracts to Treat ADHD (with James Greenblatt, M.D.)

featured image

An ever-growing body of scientific evidence confirms ADHD to be a neurologic, brain-based disorder represented by numerous biological abnormalities; in other words, what is observed as atypical behavior is merely the tip of an iceberg that extends down to an individual’s unique biochemical makeup. Certain nutritional abnormalities, which can profoundly impact cognition and behavior, are significantly correlated with ADHD. Health-care practitioners, however, often overlook nutrition, mineral levels, and individual biochemistry when assessing and treating ADHD in both children and adults.

In this hour-long webinar replay, Dr. James Greenblatt explains how to address key nutritional imbalances with an integrative treatment plan including natural, plant-derived compounds called oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). To the ADHD patient, practitioner, or parent, this integrative approach is a beacon of hope, one substantiated by modern science to effectively address the root biologic causes of ADHD.

This video will show you what you can do to help your ADHD. This is a follow up to a video I did it on executive function. That video is What is Executive Function - How it Relates to ADHD Y

When it comes to non-medication ways to manage your ADHD symptoms, we can break it down into three domains: time management, organization and planning.

People with ADHD typically have trouble estimating how long things will take and adjusting their schedules accordingly. As a result you may be frequently late to things or this can even affect your ability to finish things because you don’t take into account how long it should take. With ADHD, the loss of time is a cumulative effect.
Step one to master this time management skill is to have constant access to timepieces.
Start by getting a watch and having an adequate number of clocks visible to you in areas where you spend time.
Then create your time log using your watch and your clocks. That may take you several days to do. And start with the big things you do like getting ready for work, chores, eating dinner, getting ready for bed. This list can also include things that you do at work so you can have a better understanding of how you use your time at work.

This it’s to help you appreciate Time.
Lastly you get a daily and a weekly or monthly planner. You’re going to use the daily planner to track your appointments, obligations and to do list. And you’re going to consult the planner twice a day. In the morning to appreciate the scope of your day and in the evening to reflect on how your day transpired and review what you've got going on tomorrow. It also gives you a chance to reschedule things you didn’t complete.

ADHD | 5 Causes of ADHD-like Symptoms That Parents Can Address

featured image

12% of teens and kids are diagnosed with ADHD in the United States, almost double what the numbers were 9 years ago. Dr. Nicole Beurkens discusses ADHD symptoms and 5 key issues that cause ADHD-like symptoms.

ADHD can present itself in a few different types of ways. Here are a few examples. One type may exhibit: inattentive behavior, struggle with focus and attention in school and at home, disorganized, trouble managing time.

There is a more impulsive hyperactive type as well where individuals are more impulsive with decision making and behavior. They may seem “all over the place physically and mentally.” And sometimes an individual suffers from a combination of the two types described here. (Read more below …)

Inattentiveness and hyperactivity CAN BE NORMAL depending on age and setting.

When diagnosing a child, we look for behavior that would seem inappropriate for the individual’s developmental level.

Here are 5 key issues to be aware of that can cause ADHD-like symptoms. Often once these are addressed, the ADHD diagnosis is dismissed.

5 Key Issues To Be Aware Of
1. Nutrition – heavily processed diet (sugar, artificial sweeteners, and dyes)
2. Sleep – 40% of kids diagnosed with ADHD are actually having sleep issues
3. Screen time – too much screen time can cause hyperactivity
4. Processing issues – this could be linked to issues with learning or sensory problems like eyesight
5. Relationships – Kids could be struggling with relationships within their family or friend circle

This clip from Hannah and Her Sisters can be used to illustrate Illness Anxiety Disorder (which was called Hypochondriasis in the DSM-IV-TR). In this case, the patient Mickey (Woody Allen) does exhibit some mild symptoms (hearing impairment) and does exhibit, per Criterion C, a high level of anxiety about his health ("I am dying!"), and is easily alarmed about his personal health status ("I have a brain tumor"). Caveat: The first doctor does ask for a CAT scan (not shown) and his MD friend does acknowledge the possibility of a brain tumor (not shown either), and Mickey relaxes after his health status gets cleared, which is uncharacteristic of hypochondriacs, who are not easily convinced by medical evidence.
