Caffeine has a diuretic effect similar to alcohol. This causes the body's water to evaporate.

What amount of caffeine is necessary to make you sleep better? It all depends on how long it takes to go to sleep.

Moderate caffeine intakes would be between 200 to 300mg daily.
Heavy caffeine intake would be 500mg/day or more.

Higher caffeine levels can be found in imported coffees and teas.

A popular prescription drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is increasingly ending up in the wrong hands. New data show more people are abusing Adderall across the country and in Hennepin County.

In fact, experts say only alcohol and marijuana are abused more than prescription pills such as Adderall. Many of the abusers are in high school.

"I didn't start really noticing until I was about 15-years-old that I was addicted," said Steve, who didn't want his last name known.

Steve was 8 years old when he was given a prescription for Adderall to treat ADHD.

"It made me very attentive, made me very alert, everything was vivid, more clearer."

But Steve's addiction almost killed him. He overdosed on the medicine that was supposed to help him.

"I had gotten so addicted to them, 30 pills in one day wasn't enough."

Brian Aulwes, prevention specialist with the Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge, often goes out to local schools to talk about the dangers of Adderall abuse. He has firsthand knowledge.

"I think the first time I took Adderall and abused it, I was 14 years old," said Aulwes.

He didn't have a prescription, but that didn't stop him from popping pills. Aulwes said he got the drug from a friend.

"He stole a prescription from his mom."

Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge surveyed nearly 500 students at four West Metro schools. Sixteen percent of respondents said they've abused prescripton pills.

"One of the larger populations of people who abuse Adderall are your academics all stars at a school, " said Adam Pederson, also a prevention specialist with Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge.

Adderall is sometimes called the "study drug" or "smart pill" because it can help students focus better and stay up for hours, cramming for tests. The pills are also popular because they are easy to get.

Steve said he had no problem getting what he needed, when he needed it.

"It wasn't anything to get them. Doc—these are not doing it, can you up the dose? It was just as simple as that," he said.

But students are not the only ones abusing Adderall. Authorities said it has become a big problem in Hennepin County.

"In 2012 we saw about 15 or so individual cases where Adderall, the prescription drug, turned up in illegal circumstances. which is different from what we've seen in the past," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rick Stanek.

There are a number of side effects to Adderall abuse, includng elevated blood pressure and kidney failure. But the biggest possible side effect is overdosing, which could lead to cardiac arrest, or even death.

Those who've abused Adderall say the lingering effects of the drug can be felt for years.

"Drugs, especially prescription pills, it's just something I can't do, I still can't do it. To this day I won't even take Advil because of what happened to me when I was younger." said Steve.

Anxiety symptoms can manifest in many ways. For example, anxiety is felt in my stomach. It feels like a swirling sensation to me. It is approximately the same size as a grapefruit and it swirls clockwise when I focus. It can also cause anxiety in my throat.

Anxiety symptoms can be very intense for many people. You may feel your throat closing or anxiety pains in your body. If you don’t manage your anxiety, these physical symptoms can become a panic attack or full-blown anxiety attack.

These are the most frightening symptoms of anxiety.

There is an easy way for anxiety relief to be achieved and these symptoms will not escalate into a full-blown anxiety attack. It is important to recognize your anxiety and manage it in your body. If you ignore, fight or run from anxiety symptoms, they will only get worse. Recognize and accept the frightening physical symptoms of anxiety.

This is scary because you feel like your anxiety symptoms will only get worse if they aren’t addressed. The opposite is true. Your limbic system (the part of your brain that controls the intensity of emotions such as anxiety) is alerting you to a potential threat. It will make your anxiety worse if you ignore it.

It is simple to let your limbic system know you have received the message. Your brain is always listening, regardless of whether you speak or think. All you need to do to get your brain to listen is to think about a message.

Here’s an example. Let’s say that I feel anxiety in my stomach, anxiety in the heart, and anxiety in the head. I can describe the physical symptoms as a “swirling in my stomach, pressure and tightness in my chest.” This is how my anxiety feels in my body.

The best part? This anxiety relief exercise can be done regularly and you’ll start to rewire your pre-frontal cortex. This is your conscious brain. The exercise will teach your conscious mind how to recognize anxiety as a simple, measurable, and powerful feeling. It’s a series of physical sensations that you experience in your body. It’s an upset stomach. It’s an increase in heart rate. These symptoms can occur when you are anxious, run up stairs, eat poorly-prepared Mexican food, or get a cold. Slowly, but surely, anxiety is reduced and physical symptoms are less severe.

Panic attacks can be scary, especially in the moment that you realize that you’re having one and that it’s going to get worse before it gets better. The good news is that a panic attack will pass. You just have to ride out these next few minutes.

Here’s a video that will help you do that. Distracting yourself is a classic coping mechanism for a reason: breathing exercises and focusing on objects around you can reduce the fear you’re feeling while you wait for the attack to end. This video will help you learn these techniques, and if you’re having a panic attack right now, it’s also a distraction itself.

That said, it’s not a replacement for proper mental health care. While it’s possible to have a one-off panic attack for no particular reason, often panic attacks are part of an anxiety disorder or another mental health condition. Seek mental health help, from a therapist or from your doctor, if the attacks continue or if you’re concerned.

I'm a meditation teacher with ADHD. I quickly learned that most styles of meditation do not work for me, and don't address the root causes of ADHD.

Yes, the elusive style of meditation practice for ADHD and ADD that actually works does indeed exist. Meditating is often prescribed for those of us suffering from ADHD / ADD, which is essentially torture if it's a concentration style practice.

But fear not, mindfulness or Vipassana style practices can offer relief for the restlessness of ADHD, especially when they are focused on developing more clarity and equanimity with the underlying restlessness.

This video explores the practices that actually work for ADHD and ADD (I keep writing both because many people do not suffer from the hyperactivity).
