The Connection Between Anxiety and Stomach Problems

featured image

There’s a bidirectional relationship between gastrointestinal disorders and anxiety. This relationship is thought to be controlled by a gut-brain connection. Research studies have concluded that there is signaling between the gut and the brain that affects the way we think and behave.

So what does this mean? It means that having a disorder like GERD or Irritable Bowel Syndrome and perhaps even colitis can cause anxiety as well as depression.

Why does this matter? It matters with how you handle the anxiety. The usual medication treatment for anxiety is serotonin enhancing antidepressants like Prozac or Zoloft. But one of the main side effects of those drugs is gastrointestinal distress like nausea, diarrhea or constipation. So they can make your gastrointestinal illness worse. It may not, some people with GERD who take acid reducing medication can do okay with one of these antidepressants. But not all do.

So knowing that the anxiety medication can worsen your symptoms, an alternative approach may be to focus on getting the optimal treatment for your gastrointestinal symptoms first and then using cognitive behavioral strategies to address your anxiety.

The microbiome is the trillions of microorganisms, called microbes that inhabit your body. The microbes include bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses and most of them live in your small and large intestines.

There are some preliminary studies suggesting that probiotics that contain certain bacteria like lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium could help treat mental disorders. But the research into this intervention is still in the early stages and we are not able to say take this much probiotic to treat this disorder.

Healthy food produces good microbes. A good place to start with building a healthy microbiome is eliminating sugar and processed food and eating a clean diet. This would be food that reduces inflammation.

Download the guide /

The take home – if you have gastrointestinal problems like GERD or Irritable Bowel Syndrome – these illness can cause anxiety. So make sure you prioritize having the gastrointestinal problem treated – don’t ignore it thinking it’s probably just stress. Because ignoring it could then trigger a bigger problem of anxiety for you. Also, you want to take a serious look at your diet. It could make it big difference with how you feel without the need for taking another medication to get rid of your anxiety.

Has your ADHD meds made a difference in your life? Listen as Eric and his guest, Jordan Marsh, discuss this and much more in this episode of ADHD reWired. Jordan is a semi self-employed professional tattoo artist and single parent. He was diagnosed with ADHD about two years ago and is just now learning how profoundly his ADHD has affected his life and relationships and is possibly the reason he started doing tattoos as opposed to a more conventional career.

Jordan shares the reason he started doing tattoos, why he enjoys giving and getting them, and the connection for him between pain and expression. He gives his opinion on what people don't understand about tattoos and the challenges he faces with being a single dad and his work schedule. Jordan chats about raising a child who has ADHD, how he reels himself in when his son is disrespectful, and how his meds have helped him in both work and his life at home with his son.

Have you ever wanted to get a tattoo? Jordan talks about some tattoos he wishes he didn't have and why he got them. Take notes as he explains some ways to remove them and why colors sometimes don't look the same when you use them to cover up specific colors of tattoos.

Listen as Jordan discusses how ADHD affected his past relationships, what he has learned about himself and relationships, and what he will look for in his next relationship. Jordan also describes his seasonal depression and the final thoughts he wants to share with the listeners. You won't want to miss Eric's conversation with this fascinating man with a highly misunderstood career.

ADHD and Me: How did harmful narratives sustain my silent struggle? | Kate Luebkeman | TEDxQuestU

This talk addresses the common stigmas and prejudices surrounding ADHD and raises awareness for people living with the condition with the aim of generating more nuanced discussions. Kate Luebkeman is a fourth-year student at Quest studying the experiences of women who perform stand-up comedy. Outside of advocacy work and school, she loves to sing loudly in the shower, watch Late Night With Seth Myers and Brooklyn Nine Nine, dance to Lizzo and Ariana Grande, film Youtube videos that she will never post, and obsessively check her email. She is also addicted to changing her room as an external manifestation of her ever-buzzing brain, so she completes a dorm renovation once every two months. She was inspired to speak at TEDx about ADHD after receiving a late-in-life diagnosis this past summer that changed her life. She believes that if we talked about ADHD in a more nuanced and informed way, she could have received the help she needed years earlier. Kate hopes this talk can address common stigmas and prejudices, and raise awareness for the people with ADHD that are often left on the margins, struggling in silence to stay afloat. ADHD is found in all communities. For Latinos, cultural norms and barriers to healthcare affect the perception of ADHD symptoms in children, which may go unnoticed or undiagnosed. What are some of the cultural barriers to ADHD treatment? How can cultural beliefs affect treatment for ADHD? Dr. Lauren Haack will discuss common symptoms of ADHD and its presence in the Latino population. In addition, she gives insight into important cultural considerations professionals need to be aware of when treating Latinos with ADHD. She will also discuss how gender roles and family values may influence decisions about treatment options.

Lauren Haack, PhD, is an assistant professor and attending psychologist in the department of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. Her research program and clinical practice focus on accessible and culturally attuned evidence-based services for vulnerable youth and families, with a particular specialty in ADHD services for children in Spanish-speaking, Latinx families.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition. Generally, it is characterized by difficulty in paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.

The conventional methods of ADHD treatment offer fast-acting medicines such as stimulants to treat ADHD. However, it is known to cause side effects such as delayed growth, sleep problems, irritability when medicines wear off, and more. On the other hand, homeopathy offers a safe and effective solution. When a child with ADHD refuses to follow through on a reasonable request, it isn’t always because they are defying your authority or being manipulative. Sometimes it’s because they are simply unable to do what you asked. In the heat of the moment, it can be hard to see a child’s behavior for what it is: a biological stress response to a situation where their needs are not being met, they feel unsafe, or they aren’t able to meet expectations. So, how do you respond? And what can you do proactively to prevent future blow-ups? In this presentation, you will learn how to respond in ways that will help your child calm down and learn how to solve their problems.

This was a live webinar. Attendees heard from Dr. Wayland and asked questions after her presentation.

Objectives:

Discuss the difference between bottom-up and top-down behaviors.
Understand how the autonomic nervous system works as a person’s body shifts from feeling safe, connected, and calm to feeling threatened.
List ways people respond to threat.
List strategies you can use when your child is in different stages of regulation and dysregulation.

Sarah Wayland, PhD, is a certified RDI™ consultant and special needs care navigator in Riverdale Park, Maryland. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Parents’ Place of Maryland, The Arc of Prince George’s County, and the Special Education Citizens’ Advisory Committee for Prince George’s County. She founded her company, Guiding Exceptional Parents, to help caregivers navigate the process of supporting kids with neurological differences. Her website is www.guidingexceptionalparents.com.

This webinar is provided by CHADD’s National Resource Center on ADHD and is supported by Cooperative Agreement Number NU38DD005376 funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

So that I can make these videos available, I need to state that you must take responsibility for your own well-being if you choose to tap along. While I'm confident that tapping along with this video can provide great benefits, I make no claims as to what, if any, benefits you will receive. While EFT has yielded impressive results in treating physical and psychological issues, not everyone will benefit in the same way. I am not a doctor, and the information presented here is not intended to replace appropriate treatment by a physician or mental health professional. EFT is still in the experimental stage and, while a growing number of PhD's and MD's are adopting it, we cannot claim that it is risk free. I am unaware of anyone experiencing negative side effects from using these videos, but different people require different care, and depending on a number of variables, it is possible you could uncover deeper issues within the process that this video is not able to address. It is recommended that you consult a qualified health practitioner prior to using this technique.

That being said, I hope you will enjoy this video and find it beneficial, and that you will share it with others.

This is certainly not intended to be a comprehensive handling of the subject -- I can only cover so much in 5-10 minutes...! I'm also not working with you personally to address specific individual issues. Hopefully, though, it will help you address the issue enough that you can experience greater freedom to live the life you really desire and deserve. For further support, I encourage you to check out the other offerings available from myself and other EFT practitioners, including workshops and private sessions. For more information about tapping, as well as a ton of great resources to help you live your best life possible, please visit: m

This is only my way of using the process, rather than what might be called official EFT.

featured image

ADHD is often left undiagnosed in women and girls for a multitude of reasons, both social and scientific. Many people still believe ADHD is a problem that affects only boys. Julia Hearne shares her story and discusses how reducing stigma surrounding ADHD can increase the number of girls diagnosed and treated. Julia Hearne, a New Jersey high school senior, is an example of what it means to be a high school senior. She is passionate about eliminating stigma surrounding mental health. She hopes to spread her message in the hope that it will encourage conversations about neurodiversity. This talk was delivered at a TEDx event that used the TED conference format, but was organized locally by a community. Find out more at x
