Treating ADHD: Mom Gives 7-Year-Old Son Coffee Daily

featured image

http://abcn.ws/oezOe0

When Christie Haskell saw the classic symptoms of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in her 7-year-old son, Rowan, she became concerned.

“At home there was a lot of just hyperactivity,” she told ABC News. “Not being able to his hands to himself, talking when he’s not supposed to talk, lack of concentration or ability to concentrate when he needed to.”

Convinced Rowan suffered from ADHD, but without an official diagnosis, Haskell turned to the Internet in search of a treatment that would ease her son’s attention difficulties.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

featured image

Generalized Anxiety Disorder remains the most prevalent psychiatric disorder. Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder include a sense of unease, dread or foreboding along with excessive, unrealistic worry. Other common complaints of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder include the feeling of muscle tension, impaired concentration, insomnia and restlessness.

Complicating the diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder are irritability, sweating, trembling, headache and gastrointestinal issues. Many individuals seek care for these non-specific somatic symptoms rather than their unrecognized anxiety issues. As a result, they may undergo medical evaluation and receive therapy for their presenting complaints rather than the true underlying causative psychiatric condition.

Further compounding the problem with diagnosis, most of those with Generalized Anxiety Disorder also suffer with a number of other psychiatric maladies ranging from panic attacks to depression and social anxiety disorder. The presence of somatic issues and other psychiatric disorders complicates timely diagnosis and appropriate therapy.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder attacks women twice as frequently as men. Symptoms tend to begin in men in their early 20s while the onset tends to be delayed in women until their late 20s. Another smaller peak occurs in older individuals. African Americans appear more likely to suffer from depression when compared to Caucasians.

Treatment may include cognitive behavioral therapy or more customarily an SSRI or SNRI. While the benzodiazepines effectively mute symptoms, these drugs including Xanax, Ativan and Klonipin currently are out of favor with the government and professional organizations. In spite of this patients and doctors alike often favor drugs commonly referred to as “benzos.”

ADHD in adults often responds well to stimulant medications like dexamphetamine and methylphenidate (brands include Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta etc). These meds can boost frontal lobe function which helps with attention and with disinhibition of impulses. But that can stifle spontaneity and playfulness and cause a range of other effects.

We explore what Adult ADHD is: the attention systems don't develop properly in some people who sedation a somewhat child-like level of attention. We touch upon some of the possible causes of ADHD and the outcomes of ADHD including the impact upon self-view.

Often people find that ADHD medications become less effective with time (toelrance), requiring higher doses (dose creep). We explore the effect of stimulant medications upon:
1. frontal lobe functions of attention and spontaneity
2. the arousal effect on energy and alertness
3. the effect of reward pathway activation on positive emotion and appetite
4. the effect of the body of increased activation

Then we contrast that with the withdraw effects:
1. worse attention
2. less energy
3. less reward activation
4. less performance

The bigger the dose, generally the greater the withdrawal effects.

We explain how this whole mess can be minimised by taking steps to avoid dose creep including taking consecutive days off the stimulant medications every week and taking a longer break every few months.

Lastly we explore the striking similarities between the drugs and our endogenous neurotransmitters.

This isn't medical advise, it's for informational purposes and any decisions about your medical treatments should be made in consultation with your treater/prescriber.

Recently I posted a poll on Patreon of possible topics for videos. And 'Days I Get Nothing Done' clearly struck a nerve. Yes, some days I surprise myself with how productive I am. And other days, like this day, not so much.

Adderall is a combination of dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine that is commonly prescribed for ADHD. It is effective in combating ADHD in many people. In healthy users, it can also provide an acute cognitive boost.

Students and workers both use adderall because of its stimulant and cognition-enhancing properties.

The Drug Classroom (TDC), is dedicated to providing drug education for all. Our society is not going to be free of drugs, and it has never been completely drug-free.

It is therefore only logical to provide education that is free of propaganda.

TDC doesn't advocate drug use. We work with the intent of reducing harm that certain substances can cause.
