What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a mental disorder, can lead to hyperactive and impulsive behavior. ADHD patients may have difficulty focusing on one task or staying still for extended periods of time.

ADHD can affect both children and adults. The American Psychiatric Association recognizes ADHD as a diagnosis. Learn more about ADHD symptoms and types in children and adults.

ADHD symptoms:
—————————-
ADHD can be associated with many different behaviors. Some of the most common are
.
Problems focusing on or concentrating
Being forgetful in completing tasks
Being easily distracted
Having trouble sitting still
Interrupting people while they are talking

Types of ADHD:
————————
The APA categorizes ADHD into three types to make diagnosis more consistent. These types are predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactivity-impulsive, and a combination of both.

Predominantly inattentive
This type of ADHD is known for their extreme difficulties in focusing, completing tasks and following instructions.

Experts believe that children with inattentive ADHD might not be diagnosed because they aren’t disruptive to the classroom. This is more common in ADHD girls.

Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type
This type of ADHD is characterized by hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. These behaviors include interrupting others while they are talking and fidgeting.

Although inattention is less of a concern with this type of ADHD, people with predominantly hyperactive-impulsive ADHD may still find it difficult to focus on tasks.

Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive type
This is the most common form of ADHD. This combination type of ADHD is the most common. It includes both hyperactive and inattentive symptoms. They include inattention, impulsiveness and higher than normal levels of energy and activity.

How it is treated will depend on the type of ADHD your child or you have. Your treatment plan may change as your ADHD type changes over time. Find out more about ADHD.

ADHD in children:
—————————-
One in five 10 children aged 5 to 17 year receives an ADHD diagnosis. This makes ADHD one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders among children in the United States.

ADHD is often associated with difficulties at school for children. ADHD children often struggle to succeed in a classroom environment.

An ADHD diagnosis is more likely in boys than it is for girls. Boys are more likely to display the hallmark signs of hyperactivity. While some ADHD girls may exhibit the classic signs of hyperactivity, others don’t. In some cases, ADHD girls may have

Daydream often
Be hyper-talkative , not hyperactive ADHD symptoms can often be a result of typical childhood behavior. It can be difficult to tell what ADHD is and what it is not.

12% of teens and kids are diagnosed with ADHD in the United States, almost double what the numbers were 9 years ago. Dr. Nicole Beurkens discusses ADHD symptoms and 5 key issues that cause ADHD-like symptoms.

ADHD can present itself in a few different types of ways. Here are a few examples. One type may exhibit: inattentive behavior, struggle with focus and attention in school and at home, disorganized, trouble managing time.

There is a more impulsive hyperactive type as well where individuals are more impulsive with decision making and behavior. They may seem “all over the place physically and mentally.” And sometimes an individual suffers from a combination of the two types described here. (Read more below …)

This is important…
Inattentiveness and hyperactivity CAN BE NORMAL depending on age and setting.

When diagnosing a child, we look for behavior that would seem inappropriate for the individual's developmental level.

Here are 5 key issues to be aware of that can cause ADHD-like symptoms. Often once these are addressed, the ADHD diagnosis is dismissed.

5 Key Issues To Be Aware Of
1. Nutrition - heavily processed diet (sugar, artificial sweeteners, and dyes)
2. Sleep - 40% of kids diagnosed with ADHD are actually having sleep issues
3. Screen time - too much screen time can cause hyperactivity
4. Processing issues - this could be linked to issues with learning or sensory problems like eyesight
5. Relationships - Kids could be struggling with relationships within their family or friend circle

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that can cause above-normal levels of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. People with ADHD may also have trouble focusing their attention on a single task or sitting still for long periods of time.

Both adults and children can have ADHD. It’s a diagnosis the American Psychiatric Association (APA) recognizes. Learn about types of ADHD and symptoms in both children and adults.

ADHD symptoms:
—————————-
A wide range of behaviors are associated with ADHD. Some of the more common ones include:

having trouble focusing or concentrating on tasks
being forgetful about completing tasks
being easily distracted
having difficulty sitting still
interrupting people while they’re talking

Types of ADHD:
————————
To make ADHD diagnoses more consistent, the APA has grouped the condition into three categories, or types. These types are predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactivity-impulsive, and a combination of both.

Predominantly inattentive
As the name suggests, people with this type of ADHD have extreme difficulty focusing, finishing tasks, and following instructions.

Experts also think that many children with the inattentive type of ADHD may not receive a proper diagnosis because they don’t tend to disrupt the classroom. This type is most common among girls with ADHD.

Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type
People with this type of ADHD show primarily hyperactive and impulsive behavior. This can include fidgeting, interrupting people while they’re talking, and not being able to wait their turn.

Although inattention is less of a concern with this type of ADHD, people with predominantly hyperactive-impulsive ADHD may still find it difficult to focus on tasks.

Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive type
This is the most common type of ADHD. People with this combined type of ADHD display both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms. These include an inability to pay attention, a tendency toward impulsiveness, and above-normal levels of activity and energy.

The type of ADHD you or your child has will determine how it’s treated. The type you have can change over time, so your treatment may change, too. Learn more about the three types of ADHD.

ADHD in children:
—————————-
One in 10 children between ages 5 to 17 years receives an ADHD diagnosis, making this one of the most common childhood neurodevelopmental disorders in the United States.

For children, ADHD is generally associated with problems at school. Children with ADHD often have trouble succeeding in a controlled classroom setting.

Boys are more than twice as likely as girls to receive an ADHD diagnosis. This may be because boys tend to exhibit hallmark symptoms of hyperactivity. Although some girls with ADHD may have the classic symptoms of hyperactivity, many don’t. In many cases, girls with ADHD may:

daydream frequently
be hyper-talkative rather than hyperactive
Many symptoms of ADHD can be typical childhood behaviors, so it can be hard to know what’s ADHD-related and what’s not.
