Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive fear and anxiety. According to DSM-5, fear is an emotional response to a real or perceived imminent danger. Anxiety is the anticipation of a future threat. In an attempt to reduce anxiety and fear, people may avoid certain aspects of their lives. This can lead to a constant or intermittent panic attack.
There are many anxiety disorders. Each one is different in terms of the type of fear and severity as well as the onset pattern. Multiple anxiety disorders can be experienced at the same time. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorder. They can also be comorbid with other mental disorders. Anxiety disorders can also be accompanied by depression or substance abuse.
