Using ADHD to your advantage | Sarah Walter | TEDxYouth@DoyleAve

featured image

My Talk is about my story overcoming my ADHD in the school system and day to day life. I want not only to help others with ADHD but to also inform people, parents and teachers without ADHD about what might be going through their friends, kids, and students heads. ADHD is a topic that seem to be talked about in a negative manner more than positive, and I want to help change that. I am a strong independent women, that also likes women. I base my day to day life on humour and I am a very respectful individual. I can talk a lot, I’m also quite stubborn. My hobbies include art, long discussions with my mother, learning about and shaping myself, and other teen like enjoyments. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at x

My Talk is about my story overcoming my ADHD in the school system and day to day life. I want to not only help ADHD people but also to inform parents and teachers about the thoughts and feelings of ADHD students, friends, and family members. ADHD seems to be a subject that is more often discussed in a negative way than it is positive. I want to change that. I am an independent, strong woman who also enjoys women. I have a great sense of humor and am very respectful. Although I am able to talk quite a bit, I am also very stubborn. Art, long conversations with my mother, learning more about myself and other teenage-like pleasures are some of my hobbies. About Me:
I'm Emma McAdam. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and have worked in many settings of growth and change since 2004.. My experience includes the following: juvenile corrections, wilderness therapy programs and adventure therapy programs. I also have experience in a residential treatment center for eating disorders.

My therapy uses a combination Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Systems Theory. Positive psychology is also used. I also use a bio-psychosocial approach to treat mental illness and other problems we all face. My videos often incorporate ideas from multiple sources. Many of these ideas are based on Acceptance and Commitment therapy, particularly the work of Jason Luoma and Steven Hayes. The section on stress and the mind/body connection is based on the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal Theory), Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing), Francine Shapiro and Bessel Van der Kolk. The work of the Arbinger Institute is a major source of my understanding of how we can choose the direction of our lives.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is deeper than that. It orients my personal worldview, sense of security, peace and hope, as well as my love and respect e
