http://adhdinadults.com/ Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program emphasizes the importance of knowing your patients when prescribing medication for the treatment of ADHD. Understanding the traits of "at risk" patients can help primary care providers identify the potential for medication abuse.

Most ADHD medications act as a stimulant and have the potential to be abused, especially in colleges and universities where prescriptions may be diverted from the original patient. This type of misuse is more common in colleges because stimulants serve as cognitive performance enhancers that students use while studying or and can sometimes be used recreationally.

Alternative, low risk, stimulant medications exist to treat ADHD. These include slow releasing (extended release amphetamines) that are stimulant medications with a reduced risk of abuse. Three non-stimulant medications are also available for ADHD patients.

Physicians may be concerned with medical and legal consequences that can occur if a patient is abusing or diverting federally controlled medication, such as Adderall. It is becoming increasingly common for Doctors to use careful documentation, such as a detailed contract about the medication and its use, which is signed by the patient. Doctors diagnosing ADHD in adults can use such contracts to avoid legal problems.

featured image

Bipolar disorder is often very misunderstood. It is often believed that any condition that is unstable can be classified as bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder can be defined as the presence of hypomania or mania. Both bipolar disorder as well as unipolar depression can be characterized by depression. If you’re wondering if you have bipolar disorder, Your doctor or therapist should first ask if you have ever experienced a manic episode. Bipolar disorder is defined by mania.

This video also answers the question, “Can your bipolar diagnosis change?

Today’s video will explain the difference between hypomania and mania. I’ll also answer the question, “Can your diagnosis change between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2?” This video will help you understand mania, but it won’t help you diagnose. To be assessed if you suspect you might have bipolar disorder you should consult a doctor.

Anxiety vs Mania - How To Tell The Difference

featured image

Anxiety disorders can occur along with bipolar disorder and there is some overlap in the way anxiety and mania look that it’s not always clear which it is. This is important. This is because early warning signs of depression and mania can help you to intervene before the episode escalates. You can adjust your mood stabilizer if you feel there is a manic episode coming. If it is anxiety, you won’t want that.

These symptoms are similar to anxiety and mania.
Racing thoughts
Concentration problems
Mood irritability
Inability to fall asleep
Restlessness and agitation

Anxiety can be described as a feeling of fear, anxiety, or uneasiness. Although it can manifest in physical manifestations, anxiety starts with a feeling. Mania refers to hyperarousal. It is like an internal motor with the dial turned up.

In some ways, anxiety can be compared to mania. Although they have some similarities, anxiety and mania are different. Mania affects your body and makes you feel ill.
