Fears are common and expected in childhood; however, for some children and teens, their fears can become very severe over time, and even develop into a phobia. A phobia is an intense and unreasonable fear of a specific object or situation. This causes an extreme anxiety response towards something that is not causing immediate danger. For example, someone may have a phobia of dogs, spiders, or elevators.

Key Points:

* Phobias are the most common type of anxiety disorder
* Approximately 12.5% of the population will have a specific phobia in their lifetime
* On average, specific phobias begin in childhood, around the age of seven

I had a black dog, his name was depression

featured image

At its worst, depression can be a frightening, debilitating condition. Millions of people around the world live with depression. Many of these individuals and their families are afraid to talk about their struggles, and don’t know where to turn for help. However, depression is largely preventable and treatable. Recognizing depression and seeking help is the first and most critical towards recovery.

In collaboration with WHO to mark World Mental Health Day, writer and illustrator Matthew Johnstone tells the story of overcoming the “black dog of depression”. More information on the book can be found here: /

I had always thought of myself as a shy, cautious fellow. Careful. Overly averse to risk, rejection, or danger. But the fact is, at certain times in my life I've taken huge risks--quitting an interesting, secure, teaching position to try and make a living doing comedy for example. Or, creating a humor-filled documentary on a controversial mental health diagnosis, despite not being a doctor and never having made a documentary.

And then there are the less 'life-changing', but to me, equally memorable moments of spontaneity. Here's the story of one act of impulsivity that turned out better than I could have imagined. A lesson in seizing opportunities, but also being prepared to make them happen.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is denoted by impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity. Although ADHD is perceived to be most commonly diagnosed in boys during childhood, there are many stereotypes that are attached to this disorder that make it difficult for girls and women to be diagnosed with ADHD. This video highlights common misconceptions of ADHD that leave women largely undiagnosed and the potential implications of these misconceptions.

A medicine widely used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder also provides long-term relief from the attention and behavior changes that affect many childhood cancer survivors, according to a trial led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Young cancer survivors performed better than unmedicated patients in tests of sustained attention and other measures related to attention, social skills, and behavior one year after they started methylphenidate. Heather Conklin, Ph.D. from the St. Jude Psychology Department, is the first to publish the research in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Most families are never provided with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) ADHD treatment recommendations, because most health care and mental health providers do not know the recommendations.

As a result, families are referred to ineffective treatments like individual "talk therapy"/counseling for kids, despite the fact there is no evidence indicating that individual talk therapy is helpful in treating ADHD-related challenges.

In this video I explain the AAP treatment recommendations for ADHD. ADHD Dude provides Parent Behavior Training (a recommended treatment) through the ADHD Dude Membership Site. The Parent Behavior Training program is the first designed specifically for parents of kids with ADHD and is called 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 & 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲: www.adhddudecourses.com
