Managing ADHD & ADHD Treatment Options , ADHD in Adults

featured image

http://adhdinadults.com/ Adult ADHD treatment requires a multi-modal approach that blends medication with other components such as patient education, self-education and coaching. Other coping treatment options for ADHD include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), social skills groups and vocational assessment / counseling that can improve patient functioning and the overall quality of life.
Anthony Rostain MD/MA, is the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program and recommends that patients utilize these additional treatment options to compliment ADHD medication.

Patient education occurs through discussions between adults with ADHD and physicians. The conversation should include ADHD treatment options and the impact of ADHD in the daily life of those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Self-education is recommended to help the patient cope better with ADHD as it familiarizes people with online resources that are available. Finally, coaching can complement treatment options by offering structure and organization techniques to assist those suffering with ADHD in their daily life.

Robert Tudisco is the Executive Director of ADHD Coaching and explains how networks of ADHD coaches exist to provide support to adults and students who have been diagnosed with ADHD. The organization created to provide this support for ADHD students and adults is called The Edge Foundation. The Edge Foundation is a resource in public schools across the country and recognizes the benefits of ADHD diagnosis. Children and Adults with ADHD (CHADD) can also help provide support.

These alternative approaches are covered in educational seminars, click the link above for more information.

What Adults with ADHD Need to Know , ADHD in Adults

featured image

http://adhdinadults.com/ Learn how healthcare professionals can better educate their patients about Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and how to facilitate the conversations surrounding ADHD from Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program. Rostain offers doctors and/or PCPs guidance on how to educate patients about adult ADHD and set them up for successful treatment.

When discussing ADHD for the first time with a patient, the doctor should help the patient identify some of their strengths as well as their weaknesses as they relate to ADHD. Highlighting positive characteristics helps give patient hope and reminds the patient there is support available for managing their disorder. Encouraging patients to learn about changes in their home environment and providing other strategies for patients to cope with ADHD is also encouraged.

Doctors should discuss expectations regarding treatment options early. In order to effectively do so, physicians should be aware of the prescription options available for treating patients (stimulants and non-stimulants). Healthcare professionals should also know about local cognitive therapy resources that are available to help patients manage their ADHD.

One kind of barrier that patients may have is overcoming behavioral problems, such as procrastination. Another barrier is a lack of confidence, due to the interference ADHD has had over the course of the patient’s life. These barriers can result in compensatory strategies that can interfere with coping strategies. Cognitive therapy can help patients reduce symptoms and improve functioning without medication and knowing its advantages is important to counseling patients.

The Effects of Adult ADHD on Individuals & Society , ADHD in Adults

featured image

http://adhdinadults.com/ Learn about the effects of adult ADHD on individuals and society from Dr. Stephen Faraone, a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY. He explains in this video how ADHD can impact patients’ personal and professional lives. Faraone is aware of the positive effects ADHD treatment and diagnosis can have on his patients. He hopes to educate healthcare professionals about the disorder, especially primary care physicians who treat adults.

Faraone believes that adult ADHD is not always considered a severe disorder. This is because primary care doctors and other professionals aren’t trained to recognize it. The impact ADHD can have upon an undiagnosed patient can be dramatic. This includes adverse outcomes such as comorbid conditions and social disorders. ADHD symptoms are often overlooked even when they are recognized as a diagnosis for other disorders.

As the video shows, studies have shown that adult ADHD can lead to workplace problems such as occupational failure and underperformance. Faraone also points out the effects of adult ADHD on the outside of the workplace. Patients with attention deficit disorder who are not treated are more at risk for traffic accidents that could cause injury and have a greater likelihood of having problems in their personal relationships. ADHD adults are at greater risk of conflict in their families and more likely to end up divorcing.

ADHD is a chronic disorder that causes impairments to accumulate over time, causing turmoil in the patient’s daily life. This video explores the economic consequences of ADHD in adulthood.

Faraone advocates for ADHD diagnosis and treatment in adults. Faraone concludes the video encouraging healthcare professionals to educate themselves about the disorder and the available treatments. The link above will take you to more information about The Adult ADHD Project. Our website with

Adult ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment: Patient Story , ADHD in Adults

featured image

http://adhdinadults.com/ Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can inhibit people from functioning at their highest potential and is often the cause or a contributing factor to problems in a patient’s professional and personal life. Robert Tudisco is joined by Lenard Adler, an expert in adult ADHD, to show the benefits that patients get when they are diagnosed and treated.

After his child was diagnosed with ADHD, Tudisco sought treatment. Parents often gain insight into their own behavior after diagnosing ADHD symptoms in children. Adler suggests that adults with ADHD be screened by healthcare professionals if the child has been diagnosed. Tudisco was one of those people. He said that he struggled with time management, multitasking, and was having difficulty completing administrative tasks.

Adult ADHD can also affect personal relationships. Tudisco was concerned about his ability to be a better husband and father, so he sought help. He also learned about ADHD and heard stories from other patients. Tudisco was given a non-stimulant drug that helped him manage ADHD. He has been able to overcome many of the difficulties he faced before his diagnosis.

Adler is the Director of NYU School of Medicine’s Adult ADHD Program. Robert Tudisco, Esq. Robert Tudisco, Esq. is the Executive Director for ADHD Coaching, Adult ADHD. Please visit the link for more information about Adult ADHD. Our website with

http://adhdinadults.com Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms include impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattention and anger problems in adults. Brendan Montano M.D., Primary Care Provider (PCP). Three scenarios are used to describe the signs and symptoms of Adult ADHD in patients. These include self-referred patients, patients who present a chaotic life and/or patients with comorbidities (anxiety disorders and depression) that may mask or emerge from ADHD.

ADHD symptoms can often be recognized in adults once they are identified as a child. Eva O’Malley was one of the first to recognize her ADHD symptoms after her son was diagnosed. Eva discusses indicators such as memory problems, inability to retain verbal information and her history interrupting others.

Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can also affect performance at work and cause stress in personal relationships. Adults with ADHD are at risk of losing their jobs and experiencing marital problems. Doctor Montano urges primary care providers and psychiatrists to investigate if a patient describes their lives as chaotic or hectic. These issues could be related to attention deficit disorder. Adult ADHD Treatment Benefits: Patient Success Story , ADHD in Adults

Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with many adverse outcomes, including comorbid disorders, behavioral issues and social disorders. In this video, learn how the successful treatment of ADHD can help turn someone’s life around. Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program describes the success story of a James, a 27-year-old male who had substance abuse problems but now has created his own successful business since getting treatment for his ADHD.

James was first diagnosed in elementary school, but stopped his ADHD treatment when he was in grade school and began to use recreational and prescription drugs. Ultimately, this got him into legal trouble and he was diagnosed with poly-substance abuse, which included multiple drug addictions and an alcohol addiction. Once in treatment, Rostain was asked to consult James and he realized James still was suffering from the ADHD he had as a child.

After being admitted into treatment, James complained of depression, had a tough time completing tasks and staying focused. ADHD treatment was offered through a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. These sessions helped James learn about adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, how it was impacting him and how he could better cope.

Are your child hyperactive and impulsive? Do they have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? These ADHD guidelines can help you determine if your child needs a checkup.

Step 1: Take note of their attention span
You can see their ability to concentrate. While most children are able to pay attention, ADHD sufferers seem to have a shorter attention span than other children. However, they can't seem to listen to their parents even when they speak to them. They often lose their things, have difficulty following instructions and make many careless mistakes.

Step 2: Rate their hyperactivity
If they seem to be too energetic, even for children, it is important to recognize this. Do they have trouble sitting still? Are they prone to running or climbing in inappropriate ways? Do they often get in trouble at school because they can't sit still? Are they a constant talker? Do they interrupt constantly?

Tip
Some children are more attentive than others, and vice versa. Boys are more likely than girls to have attention problems.

Step 3: Consider how long it has lasted
Take into account how long this behavior has been ongoing. ADHD is a diagnosis that can be confirmed if symptoms are present for longer than six months.

Step 4: Look at where it is
Take note of where they behave. ADHD could be the cause of their symptoms if they are only present at home or at school.

Step 5: Assess the seriousness
Assess the severity of the problem. ADHD children are often disruptive at school and home. ADHD children have problems with their relationships with other children and adults.

Step 6: Visit the doctor
You should take your child to the pediatrician if you notice any of these symptoms. Before ADHD can be diagnosed, it is important for your child to have a medical exam.

Did You Know?
ADHD was twice as common in children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy than in those whose mothers didn't smoke.

Please note I am not a medical professional.

After 3+ years on Concerta/Methylphenidate, I finally threw in the towel and switched to Elvanse Adult (UK Vyvanse). I talk about why I made the switch and my initial observations of the effects of the drug in comparison to Methylphenidate.

In this video he explains how undiagnosed ADHD impacts patients both in their personal life and in the workplace. Faraone recognizes the benefits that ADHD diagnosis and treatment can have in his patients and hopes to educate healthcare professionals on the disorder, specifically primary care physicians who treat adults.

Adult ADHD is not always viewed as a disorder with a high degree of severity, a mistake Faraone believes is due to the lack of training for primary care physicians and doctors about adult ADHD. However, the impact ADHD can have on an undiagnosed patient is dramatic and includes many adverse outcomes, such as comorbid disorders and social disorders. ADHD is often is overlooked, even when other disorders are diagnosed, due to a lack of understanding surrounding ADHD symptoms.

Studies show that adult ADHD can cause difficulty in the workplace such as underperformance and occupational failure, as described in the video. Faraone points out the impact of adult ADHD outside the workplace as well. Untreated patients with attention deficit disorder are at an increased risk of traffic accidents, which can potentially cause harm and are more likely to have problems with personal relationships. In fact, ADHD adults have a higher risk of conflict within their family and are more likely to have a marriage that ends in divorce.

ADHD is a chronic disorder, which means these impairments accumulate over years and causing turbulence in the patient’s life. The cumulative impact of adult ADHD on society is explored in this video through exploring the disorders economic implications on a large scale.

Faraone is an advocate for diagnosing and treating ADHD in adults and concludes the video by encouraging healthcare professionals educate and familiarize themselves with the disorder and treatment options.

Adult ADHD expert, Lenard Adler, joins Robert Tudisco to illustrate the benefits patients receive when diagnosed and treated for ADHD.

Tudisco sought help for ADHD shortly after his child was tested and diagnosed. Often after identifying ADHD symptoms in children, parents gain insight on their own behaviors. For that reason, Adler recommends that healthcare professions screen adults for ADHD if their child has been diagnosed. Such was the case for Tudisco, who noted that at work he was having problems with time management, paying attention to multiple things at once and completing administrative tasks.

Personal relationships can also suffer due to adult ADHD. Concerned about being a better father and husband, Tudisco sought help and became educated with information on ADHD and stories about other patients. He was prescribed a non-stimulant medication that has helped him cope with his ADHD and has since been able to overcome some of the obstacles that he was unable to manage prior to his diagnosis.

Adler is the Director of the Adult ADHD Program at NYU School of Medicine. Robert Tudisco, Esq. is the Executive Director of ADHD Coaching, Adult ADHD. For more information on Adult ADHD please visit the link above. Our Website with Free Resources

ADHD Symptoms & Behaviors in Adults , ADHD in Adults

featured image

http://adhdinadults.com Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms include impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattention and anger problems in adults. Primary Care Provider (PCP) Brendan Montano, M.D. describes common signs of Adult ADHD in patients by presenting three common scenarios that often lead to diagnosis, including: self-referred patients, patients that present their life in chaos and/or those experiencing comorbidities (anxiety disorders, depression and substance abuse) as they may be masking and emerging from ADHD.

ADHD symptoms are often realized in adults after being identified in a child. Such was the case for Eva O’Malley, the founder of Monmouth Ocean CHADD, who became aware of her own ADHD after her son was diagnosed. Eva speaks about indicators such as problems with her memory, her inability to retain information from verbal sources and her history of interrupting others.

Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may also impact performance at work and strain personal relationships. Marriage problems and job loss are not uncommon for adults with untreated ADHD. Doctor Montano encourages primary care providers to dig deeper when a patient presents their life as hectic or chaotic as these issues may be derived from behaviors associated with attention deficit disorder. Please visit the link above to learn more about recognizing and treating adult attention deficit disorder.
