Anxiety manifests in people as the fear of something dangerous happening. You may have heard the phrase “fight, flight or freeze.” This term refers to what individuals do when they feel extremely anxious. “Fight” describes a person is who is actively defending themselves against a perceived threat, flight means that the individual feels the need to run away from the dangerous situation and freeze manifests as the person feeling paralyzed.
When a person is anxious, they experience physical symptoms in addition to emotional ones. Often people who have chronic anxiety experience numbness and tingling, racing heart, sweating and shortness of breath. When you’re anxious your brain is telling you that you’re not safe and your body reacts to the perceived threat. It’s an evolutionary aspect of being a human being. In the past, people had to defend themselves against enemies whether they were other humans or dangerous predatory animals. In modern society, it’s unlikely you will come into contact with a grizzly bear in your neighborhood, but you can still experience panic in other current day settings.
Whether there is a legitimate, tangible threat or a perceived danger, anxiety is extremely real, and your feelings are valid. For example, if you are physically assaulted, you feel frightened and panicked. Here you’re experiencing a dangerous threat that you can identify. Often anxiety isn’t linked to a tangible threat, but instead an abstract fear of what may occur in the future. When you feel anxious, you are worried about what could happen as opposed to what is happening right here and now. That’s why therapist often teaches clients mindfulness to bring them back to the present when they are anxious.
If you’re having chronic anxiety or panic attacks you can get help for these problems. A mental health professional is trained to identify and treat anxiety or panic. Whether you find a therapist in your area or work with an online counselor, both professionals know how to help you develop coping skills to manage anxiety and start to live a healthier life.

The rising rate of ADHD has many parents wondering if the diagnosis is too subjective.
"I think there would probably be some chemical imbalance or something they would need to do further testing - other than making that decision or diagnosis just by looking at the child," says dad Kris Willing.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a clinical diagnosis based on a collection of symptoms rather than a single test. That opens it up to interpretation. If you wonder whether your child has ADHD, work with a doctor who follows nationally recognized standards set forth by governing pediatric and psychiatric groups.
"A lot of people think they can just spot a child and say 'oh that child is hyper active'. Meaning that sure it's an active child, it engages in a lot of gross motor behavior, but that doesn't mean that child has a disorder," says Dr. Elena Reyes, clinical psychologist with Lee Memorial Health System.
A key point in making an ADHD diagnosis is that symptoms must be present in more than one setting. Which is why the evaluation includes observations from parents, caregivers and teachers.
"When we actually do an evaluation for ADHD we really try to do a thorough evaluation. So what you're doing is not only observing the child, you're getting information from the parents but you're also getting information from the teacher. Because one of the things we know the demand characteristics in the classroom are very different than for example the dinner table or watching TV," says Reyes.
A psychologist, pediatrician or neurologist will rate a child's behavior compared to peers. Symptoms to look out for are: constant motion, fidgeting, distractedness and inability to finish tasks. Evaluations should wait until age seven. And remember, ADHD isn't a blanket for every bothersome behavior.
"It may just be a cause of today's technology- with kids being in front of iPad's and iPhones, tablets, whatever," says Willing.

http://adhdinadults.com/ Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program emphasizes the importance of knowing your patients when prescribing medication for the treatment of ADHD. Understanding the traits of "at risk" patients can help primary care providers identify the potential for medication abuse.
Most ADHD medications act as a stimulant and have the potential to be abused, especially in colleges and universities where prescriptions may be diverted from the original patient. This type of misuse is more common in colleges because stimulants serve as cognitive performance enhancers that students use while studying or and can sometimes be used recreationally.
Alternative, low risk, stimulant medications exist to treat ADHD. These include slow releasing (extended release amphetamines) that are stimulant medications with a reduced risk of abuse. Three non-stimulant medications are also available for ADHD patients.
Physicians may be concerned with medical and legal consequences that can occur if a patient is abusing or diverting federally controlled medication, such as Adderall. It is becoming increasingly common for Doctors to use careful documentation, such as a detailed contract about the medication and its use, which is signed by the patient. Doctors diagnosing ADHD in adults can use such contracts to avoid legal problems.

4:05 Treatment of Social anxiety disorder
Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder characterized by sentiments of fear and anxiety in social situations, causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some aspects of daily life.[2]:15 These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others. Individuals with social anxiety disorder fear negative evaluations from other people.
Physical symptoms often include excessive blushing, excess sweating, trembling, palpitations, and nausea. Stammering may be present, along with rapid speech. Panic attacks can also occur under intense fear and discomfort. Some sufferers may use alcohol or other drugs to reduce fears and inhibitions at social events. It is common for sufferers of social phobia to self-medicate in this fashion, especially if they are undiagnosed, untreated, or both; this can lead to alcohol use disorder, eating disorders or other kinds of substance use disorders. SAD is sometimes referred to as an illness of lost opportunities where "individuals make major life choices to accommodate their illness".[3][4] According to ICD-10 guidelines, the main diagnostic criteria of social phobia are fear of being the focus of attention, or fear of behaving in a way that will be embarrassing or humiliating, avoidance and anxiety symptoms.[5] Standardized rating scales can be used to screen for social anxiety disorder and measure the severity of anxiety.
The first line of treatment for social anxiety disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).[6] Medications such as SSRIs are effective for social phobia, especially paroxetine.[7] CBT is effective in treating this disorder, whether delivered individually or in a group setting.[8] The cognitive and behavioral components seek to change thought patterns and physical reactions to anxiety-inducing situations. The attention given to social anxiety disorder has significantly increased since 1999 with the approval and marketing of drugs for its treatment. Prescribed medications include several classes of antidepressants: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).[9] Other commonly used medications include beta blockers and benzodiazepines.
Today we’re going to talk about social anxiety disorder symptoms and how to know if you have it. Does the fear of being embarrassed or scrutinized cause you to avoid speaking to people? Do you avoid activities in which you are the center of attention? And is your worst fear, being humiliated or being made to look inadequate in front of other people? If so, you might have a social anxiety disorder.

What Is Social Anxiety? Social anxiety disorder is actually quite common and it’s one of the more common psychiatric disorders. In the United States, it has a lifetime prevalence of 5 to 12%. Social anxiety disorder is more common in women than men, but men, most certainly, can get it. And if you are going to get a social anxiety disorder, it usually presents itself in adolescence, usually in the mid-teens, but children as young as five years of age can be diagnosed and even people who are older can be diagnosed, especially if they are in a situation where there are new social activities.

Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms Social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia, can be quite debilitating. And here are some of the symptoms.
You Avoid Social Situations You may have a social anxiety disorder if you avoid social situations. If you worry that you’re going to be embarrassed in front of other people, or if you fear that others will speak negatively of you if they perceive you as being inadequate. You Interpret Neutral Reactions As Being Negative For example, if you’re having a conversation with someone, which is quite normal, and they’re reacting to you in a very neutral manner, you may walk away thinking, “Oh, that person doesn’t like me. They think I’m not smart. They think I’m not good enough.” You may interpret something that is more negative than it actually is. Fast Heart Rate There are also some physical symptoms associated with social anxiety disorder. They include getting a fast heart rate or even irregular breathing or actually having a tremble or tremulousness. Often Avoid Making Eye Contact or Speaking If you are someone who avoids making eye contact or if you often avoid speaking to people you may have social anxiety. Sweating You might have a social anxiety disorder if when you are in public or in front of other people, you start sweating, getting a very fast heart rate, blushing or feeling flushed, having some fast or irregular breathing.
