Commonly prescribed medications like Vyvanse and Adderall can be illegal in some countries even if legally obtained elsewhere. In addition to prescriptions, common concerns for students, advisors, and parents include how ADHD might be perceived in Japanese society and universities.

On the other hand, many find Japan accommodating for people with many types of disabilities. English and Japanese speaking clinics provide a high quality of care to manage ADHD, and teachers can be willing to provide reasonable accommodations in classes.

Join the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) along with our panel of presenters to learn how people with ADHD can study, volunteer or work in Japan. Captioning will be provided.

How did I get so much stuff?

featured image

Do I have a hoarding disorder? My closets are stuffed with stuff. I have stacks of five to six boxes. Stockpiled with more stuff on every surface!

We have experienced a lot of clutter since we moved to a smaller house. It’s not just personal stuff. There are hundreds of tapes and scripts of television series. Paperwork. Memorabilia

Before I can sort through a box and decide what to keep, it is important to make sure that there is a flat surface. What about the stuff I need to keep? Next, I must find a place to store the ‘keepers.

It has been challenging. Emotional. It can be difficult. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to understand if I might have a hoarding disorder.

ADHD and Me: How did harmful narratives sustain my silent struggle? | Kate Luebkeman | TEDxQuestU

featured image

This talk addresses the common stigmas and prejudices surrounding ADHD and raises awareness for people living with the condition with the aim of generating more nuanced discussions. Kate Luebkeman is a fourth-year student at Quest studying the experiences of women who perform stand-up comedy. Outside of advocacy work and school, she loves to sing loudly in the shower, watch Late Night With Seth Myers and Brooklyn Nine Nine, dance to Lizzo and Ariana Grande, film Youtube videos that she will never post, and obsessively check her email. She is also addicted to changing her room as an external manifestation of her ever-buzzing brain, so she completes a dorm renovation once every two months. She was inspired to speak at TEDx about ADHD after receiving a late-in-life diagnosis this past summer that changed her life. She believes that if we talked about ADHD in a more nuanced and informed way, she could have received the help she needed years earlier. Kate hopes this talk can address common stigmas and prejudices, and raise awareness for the people with ADHD that are often left on the margins, struggling in silence to stay afloat. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at x

How Did I Get TOO Much Stuff?

featured image

Do I have a hoarding disorder? I have closets crammed full of stuff. Stacks of 5 or 6 boxes. Every surface piled with more stuff!

Moving to a much smaller house has created a crisis of clutter for us. Not just personal stuff. Hundreds of video tapes and scripts from television series. Paperwork. Memorabilia We’re living in a rummage sale!

Before sorting through a box to decide what to keep, I have to clear a flat surface. But where do I put that stuff? Then I need find a place for the ‘keepers.’

It’s been confronting. Emotional. And difficult. And I’m starting to wonder do I have a Hoarding Disorder?!

In this episode, I discuss what drives hunger and satiety, and the role our brain, stomach, fat and hormones play in regulating hunger and turning off the desire to eat more. I also address how protein is assimilated better early in the day than it is later in the day, and why those using intermittent fasting might want to shift their feeding window to earlier in the day.

Then I delve into the topic of disorders of eating: Anorexia Nervosa, where people starve themselves and Bulimia Nervosa where people binge and purge their food. I discuss some common myths about Anorexia such as the role of media images increasing the rates of anorexia and the myth of the "perfectionist" anorexic. I also review the symptoms, and the brain and chemical systems disrupted in this condition. I explain how anorexics become hyperaware of the fat content of foods and develop reflexive habits of fat-hyperawareness. Then I discuss the most effective treatments ranging from family-based models to those that target the habitual nature of low-fat/calorie food choices. I also discuss new more experimental clinical trials on MDMA, Psilocybin and Ibogaine for Anorexia, and both their promise and risks.

I review the latest work on binge eating disorder and brain stimulation, drug treatments and thyroid disruption in Bulimia and why the treatments for Bulimia are so similar to those for ADHD. Finally, I discuss "cheat days," body dysmorphia and the growing list of novel forms of eating disorders start to finish. As always, science and science-based tools are discussed.

Did I say THAT?/Socially Awkward/Chatty and Black/Foot In Mouth/Coming Soon/Does it ever stop talking?

featured image

The next episode (Ep.5) is coming soon! “Was that something I said?” I remember when a friend would introduce me with their friends. Conversations are lively, people are laughing, and then suddenly, I feel a sharp elbow hit me in the ribs or get serious side-eyes from said-friend. I broke the rules of small-talk by “getting to the point”. It’s fine to be direct and hate polite small talk. You don’t have to go into someone else’s head or heart when you can simply take the express way. Right? Right?? Yes, it’s true. What if your radar isn’t able to tell you when your foot is in front of your mouth? You might not be able to pick up social cues until you are scolded by “friends” about how rude and too familiar you are with strangers. You are so “off-putting”. Each quote you have just read is an insult/correction from anyone, from family members to best buddies. And, former best friends. The truth is that your directness isn’t your problem. It’s the other people’s judgments and narrow view of “normal” social behaviour. Normal is people who do not have ADHD, Asperger’s, or other neurodiverse wiring. “Normal” means people who can “boldly”, be direct, “boldly”, state our intentions, and “boldly”, announce their entrance to the room. Miss Manners doesn’t see anything unusual about the way we interact. “Bold” is a polite way to say “there’s something wrong” or “that wasn’t right” or any other insult that can make us doubt our abilities and cause us to lose faith. Can you see it? This is another brick we add to our wall to make us feel less awkward around others who are eager to judge us for being…unique, awkwardly, ourselves.

ADHD and Me: How could harmful narratives sustain me in my silent struggle? | Kate Luebkeman | TEDxQuestU

featured image

This talk addresses the common stigmas and prejudices surrounding ADHD and raises awareness for people living with the condition with the aim of generating more nuanced discussions. Quest is Kate Luebkeman, a fourth-year Quest student who studies the experiences of stand-up comedians. She enjoys school and advocacy, but she also loves to sing in the shower and dance to Ariana Grande and Lizzo. As an external manifestation her constantly-buzzing brain, she is obsessed with changing her room. She completes a dorm remodel every two months. After receiving a life-changing diagnosis of ADHD in her late twenties, she was inspired to give TEDx talk about ADHD. She believes that if ADHD was discussed in a more nuanced, informed manner, she would have been able to get the help she needed many years ago. Kate hopes that this talk will address the common prejudices and stigmas surrounding ADHD and bring awareness to the many people living with the condition. This talk was delivered at a TEDx event that used the TED conference format, but was independently organized by a local community. Find out more at x

If you are new to tapping, please watch this video so you understand what it is about: />
So that I can make these videos available, I need to state that you must take responsibility for your own well-being if you choose to tap along. While I'm confident that tapping along with this video can provide great benefits, I make no claims as to what, if any, benefits you will receive. While EFT has yielded impressive results in treating physical and psychological issues, not everyone will benefit in the same way. I am not a doctor, and the information presented here is not intended to replace appropriate treatment by a physician or mental health professional. EFT is still in the experimental stage and, while a growing number of PhD's and MD's are adopting it, we cannot claim that it is risk free. I am unaware of anyone experiencing negative side effects from using these videos, but different people require different care, and depending on a number of variables, it is possible you could uncover deeper issues within the process that this video is not able to address. It is recommended that you consult a qualified health practitioner prior to using this technique.

That being said, I hope you will enjoy this video and find it beneficial, and that you will share it with others.

This is certainly not intended to be a comprehensive handling of the subject -- I can only cover so much in 5-10 minutes...! I'm also not working with you personally to address specific individual issues. Hopefully, though, it will help you address the issue enough that you can experience greater freedom to live the life you really desire and deserve. For further support, I encourage you to check out the other offerings available from myself and other EFT practitioners, including workshops and private sessions. For more information about tapping, as well as a ton of great resources to help you live your best life possible, please visit: m

This is only my way of using the process, rather than what might be called official EFT.

If you enjoyed this video, please subscribe to my videos and share them with others. I hope you will also sign up for my free monthly newsletter "Success Beyond Belief" - only one issue a month, filled with good stuff for your body, mind and spirit.
