For a long time the model of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has been that it’s a neurodevelopmental disorder that starts in childhood. The expected course of ADHD has been that that about 50% of people with childhood ADHD, continue to have symptoms into adulthood. But a study from earlier this year found that only 10% of children completely grow out of ADHD. In this video I talk about the expected course of ADHD from childhood into adulthood.

This video presents 17 reasons why I believe ADHD is not a legitimate medical disorder.
1. ADHD symptoms are a result of the fragmentation in our culture
2. ADHD children have normal brain development, but are 2-3 years behind non-ADHD kids )
3. Different learners are finding it more difficult to succeed in school because of the lack of accountability and standardization. 4. Many ADHD symptoms can be described as ''all-boy'' behavior 5. ADHD symptoms can be caused by too much mass media
consumption. 6. The decline in unstructured play in our culture
is a part of the ADHD epidemic. 7. ADHD children are hunters in a farmer's world 8. ADHD children are novelty-seekers. That's creative behavior
9. ADHD is a condition that can lead to adverse living situations in the home and communities
. 10. These kids are better described by a neurodiversity paradigm than a disability paradigm 11. Fidgeting, which is one of the symptoms of ADHD, actually helps ADHD children concentrate better
12. These kids tend to focus long periods of their attention on the things they love - this is a positive thing and not a sign
. 13. Many of the ADHD authorities come from backgrounds that required them to comply with their supervisors and professors. So they view compliance as an absolute benefit, but there are also good things about non-compliance (e.g. our Founding Fathers in U.S .)
14. ADHD can cause a child to have a temperament that is not normal, but some children with ADHD may be more difficult than others.
15. ADHD can be present in the caregiver-child relationship, but not within the child
16. Big Pharma has been encouraging a medicalization of society to help create and sustain a market in ADHD drugs and services. Doctors sometimes spend as little 15 time diagnosing ADHD in children )..
. 17. Other conditions can mimic ADHD symptoms, including mood disorders, anxiety and PTSD, as well as hearing problems.

What does Adderall feel like? The SURPRISING and SHOCKING outcome.

featured image

How does Adderall make you feel? Everyone is different, but Adderall (a stimulant medication) has been shown to improve concentration and impulsivity in people who legitimately need pharmaceutical intervention for diagnosed ADHD. For me, in addition to improved focus and impulse control, I also found relief from brain fog, I can prioritize better and…something else that I never expected. Something so weird and inexplicable that it’s actually funny.

No Adderall? TRY THIS
I love this coffee so much that I recommend it.
When my meds wear off, I drink Genius Blend Coffee. I boosts my focus if it need that extra support at the end of the day or whenever if I am out of meds.

For a biology project, Hudson wonders here whether Genetic Engineering could be utilized to rid the world of teen suicide due to anxiety, depression and ADHD. He examines the science , the history of eugenics and science fiction novels that play with the possibilities of genetic engineering to provide a compelling reason why the possible risks of genetic engineering can be justified to eliminate teen suicide due to mental illness.

Hudson Kaneko is a 15 year old (he/his/him) guy who is typical in so many ways and struggles with depression, anxiety and ADHD. He has tried everything from therapists to medication to embracing these challenges.

Ep. 5.2 5 Tips To Fix your ADHD Social Skills

featured image

Part two of the series ADHD Social Awkwardness and Social Skills. Pardon me while I expose my own awkward, insulting, feelings-hurting mishaps caused by my ADHD MOUTH.
If you’d like to assess your own social skills, here is a checklist (also available on the CHADD webpage.) (CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder))

ASSESSMENT OF SOCIAL SKILLS

Interviews and self-report questionnaires are the primary tools for assessing social skill deficits and interpersonal interaction problems in adults with ADHD. During the course of a diagnostic evaluation for ADHD (see What We Know #9, “Diagnosis of ADHD in Adults”), a mental health professional will thoroughly assess the social interactions of the adult. When questionnaires are used, it is important to include both a self-report by the individual with ADHD and reports by spouses, significant others, and friends on a comparable version of the questionnaire.

The questionnaire may include the following types of items:

-Difficulty paying attention when spoken to, missing pieces of information
-Appears to ignore others
-Difficulty taking turns in conversation (tendency to interrupt frequently)
-Difficulty following through on tasks and/or responsibilities
-Failure to use proper manners
-Missed social cues
-Disorganized lifestyle
-Sharing information that is inappropriate
-Being distracted by sounds or noises
-Become flooded or overwhelmed, shutting down
-Disorganized or scattered thoughts
-Rambling or straying off topic during conversations
-Ending a conversation abruptly

Adolescence is marked by acute biological changes such as sexual maturation, height and weight gain, and further development in brain structure and organization. These rapid and amazing changes take place during a period of social pressures in which many young adults find themselves simultaneously adapting to changes in their bodies while trying to fit in to their peer groups.

What risks arise for addiction in such a scenario; how can we better assess these risks; and what are the long-term repercussions for addiction at such a tender age? Such is the matter of the next Demystifying Medicine.

Nora Volkow is director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and a principal investigator in the NIH Intramural Research Program. Her body of research has been instrumental in demonstrating that drug addiction is a brain disorder. She has pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate how substance use affects brain functions, and she also has made important contributions to the neurobiology of obesity, ADHD, and aging.

Brenda Curtis is a principal investigator in NIDA Translational Addiction Medicine Branch. Her research focus is translational, leveraging social media and big data methodology to form the development, evaluation, and implementation of technology-based tools that address substance use and related conditions such as HIV/AIDS. She also is making strides in understanding how stigma plays a fundamental role in the development and perpetuation of health inequities and addiction.

How does Adderall make you feel? It's a shocking and surprising result.

featured image

How does Adderall make you feel? Although everyone is unique, Adderall (a stimulant medication), has been shown to increase concentration and impulsivity in those who have ADHD. In addition to having better focus and impulse control, Adderall also helped me with brain fog. I am able to prioritize better and do things in a way that is unexpected. It’s so bizarre and unexplainable, it’s funny.

What about Adderall? TRY THIS
This coffee is my favorite.
After my meds have worn off, I enjoy Genius Blend Coffee. If I’m out of medication, it helps me focus and boost my energy.

Is this you? Tapping your fingers. Bouncing a leg. Playing with a pen, pen, keys and rings.
Until someone shouts "Stop! You don't realize how irritating that can be! "
You probably didn't know we were doing it. You stop. You'll be silent for a few seconds. Then tap-tap-tap

Why do we fidget? Do we need to be concerned? Is it a problem? Could it be a solution?

Although others may find your fidgeting distracting it can actually help you manage your agitation and increase your ability to concentrate and think.

Ep. 5.2 5 Tips To Fix your ADHD Social Skills

featured image

Part two of the series ADHD Social Awkwardness and Social Skills. Please pardon me as I reveal my embarrassing, hurtful, and feelings-hurting ADHD MOUTH.
Here is a checklist that can be used to evaluate your social skills. It’s also available on the CHADD website. (CHADD (Children & Adults with Attention Disorder ))

ASSESSMENT OF SOCIAL SKILLS

Interviews and self-report questionnaires can be used to assess social skills and interpersonal interactions in adults with ADHD. A mental health professional will assess the adult’s social interactions during a diagnosis of ADHD. It is important that questionnaires include both the self-report of an individual with ADHD as well as reports from spouses, significant other, and friends.

These types of items may be included in the questionnaire:

-Difficulty paying close attention to others, missing pieces
-Appears as if
is being ignored-Difficulty in taking turns in conversation (tendency )
to interrupt often-Difficulty following through on tasks and/or responsibilities
-Failing to use proper manners
-Mistaken social cues
-Disorganized lifestyle
-Sharing information that is inappropriate
-Being distracted
by sounds or other noises-Flooding or being overwhelmed can cause
to be shut down.-Disorganized thoughts
-Rambling or straying off topic during conversations
-Ending abruptly a conversation

You can learn more about ADHD adults, particularly women, and how they struggle to make lasting friendships and social interaction.

Although prescription stimulants are often highly effective in reducing ADHD symptoms in children, adolescents, and adults, problems of non-medical misuse and abuse of prescription stimulants among adolescents, college students, and adults have become evident in recent years. Students who are unable to do a lot of work want to reap the benefits of stimulant medication. Many students will ask their friends, acquaintances, and even strangers if they have prescriptions to sell them their medication. Other students might steal medication from an ADHD student. This webinar will provide information for parents, college students, and professionals on how to prevent misuse, abuse and diversion.
