Ancient Rome's Answer to Social Shame

featured image

It’s natural for most of us to spend time descending into worry about our reputation: what if we are accused of something, what if we are ostracised, mocked and cancelled? A useful way out of the panic was suggested many centuries ago by the Stoic thinkers of Ancient Greece and Rome.

“It’s natural for most of us to spend time worrying about our reputation: what others think of us, whether we are deemed good or bad by the community…

This can quickly become a painful topic, and our thoughts can descend into bonfires of worry: what if we are accused of something, what if we are ostracised and mocked, what about if we become a pariah?

A useful way out of the panic was suggested many centuries ago by the Stoic thinkers of Ancient Greece and Rome. They suggested that we divide the topic of reputation into two.

On the one hand, who we are and what we think of ourselves.

And on the other: what other people may decide to declare or say about us.”

It would be great if people with ADHD could have their brains scanned and the results would illuminate a flashing neon sign that definitively diagnosed the condition, but of course it’s never that simple. In the final episode on ADHD, we’ll dive into how it’s diagnosed and what the most common treatments seem to be.

Research indicates the ADHD brain looks and behaves differently from neurotypical brains, but imaging technology like CT scans, PET scans, or MRIs can’t be used to diagnose it, in part because they’re not sensitive enough yet to work on a case-by-case basis or differentiate between other possible causes.

There are a wide malady of tests that can be given, but frankly, you don't even need any tests necessarily to diagnose ADHD. It could be diagnosed through observation, interview, that sort of thing. Often it just comes down to the observations of a trained medical professional like a psychiatrist, psychologist, or pediatrician.

To meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis the symptoms have to negatively impact work, school, or social functioning, be persistent for at least 6 months and in at least two settings like at school and at home, and they have to appear before age 12. Patients under 17 must have at least 6 symptoms, and those 17 and up must show at least 5. Still, even detailed guidelines applied by medical professionals don’t guarantee an accurate diagnosis.

“Diagnosing ADHD in adults is more difficult because there's some disagreement about whether the list of symptoms used to diagnose children and teenagers also applies to adults. In some cases, an adult may be diagnosed with ADHD if they have 5 or more of the symptoms of inattentiveness, or 5 or more of hyperactivity and impulsiveness, listed in diagnostic criteria for children with ADHD.”

ADHD Medications for Adults and Children: ADD Stimulants, Nonstimulants & More

How Technology Can Help You Cope With ADHD
/
“Technology helps ADHDers by providing brain stimulation, but technology can also help the brain slow down through meditation practices and apps such as Calm, Headspace, and Open, which includes movement with mindfulness. Do we need technology to meditate? Absolutely not. But can it help achieve results? Absolutely.”

Cake:
(use GRAMS so you can adjust the flour amount)

Whipped Cream:
2-3 cups heavy cream
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vanilla

Cornflake crunch:
1:1 ratio of cornflakes to sugar
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
*Toss the sugar and cornflakes in a pan until the sugar melts and then mix around constantly until it starts to brown and then remove from pan immediately

GOOD LUCK!!!

Stefan discusses how to overcome anxiety and fear in 30 less than a second.

"Now fear is something I'm familiar with. I grew up with it a lot. My story is not what you might expect. I was shy when I was younger. I had a lot anxiety and fear.

I used to be a videogamer, so I protect myself by spending my entire time at home alone in front of the computer.

Sure enough, I had high school goals. I wanted to be a woman and have a girlfriend. But my fear kept me from achieving them. Fear paralyzed my life. "

You have ADHD. Congratulations! How your diagnosis can save your life. #adhd #adhddiagnosis

featured image

You got it, now you know..but what is it?
ADHD diagnosis can literally save your life. Long term studies show that people who never treated their ADHD have, on average, a lifespan 13 shorter than people who actively manage ADHD or people who don’t t have the condition at all.

Why? Long-story, short: ADHD negatively impacts a person’s mental health, their ability to plan for the future, their ability to manage finances due to impulsivity or a co-existing condition related to comprehending numbers, risk-taking behavior and an overall lack of support from people who don’t understand why those of us with ADHD engage in self-sabotaging behavior.
Guess what? We don’t understand either…unless we work really hard to seek answers.

Note: you can only receive an official diagnosis and medication from your physician. Preferably, one who specializes or well-learned in Adult ADHD. That’s another episode.

ADHD can be treated by a variety of medications, and the two most common drug classes used for treatment are stimulants and nonstimulants. The main difference between the two is that stimulants stimulate the Central Nervous System (CNS), and nonstimulants do not. Once stimulated, the CNS releases dopamine and adrenaline, prompting multiple reactions in the body, such as increased focus and a faster heart rate.

This video describes the differences between the two drug classes, gives popular examples of each (ie adderall and vyvanse as stimulants and wellbutrin and strattera as a nonstimulants) and describes the differences between the drugs with regard to their chemicals and compounds. But don't worry - I keep it fast-paced and upbeat, with a bit of humor sprinkled in.

I also answer a few popular questions, such as:

"Why do some medications work well for me, while others don't?"
"Is there a way to find out if a certain drug will work better for me?"
"What's the deal with citric and ascorbic acid (vitamin c)?"
"Should I eat before I take my medication?"
"How often should I take my medication?"

My Inner Old Black Man

featured image

Maybe it’s because I’m an only child or maybe it’s because I have ADHD or maybe it’s both that enables me to entertain myself with the characters in my head that sometimes come out to play. This was one such moment. When I arrived at the dog park, I saw no one and my inner black man said “well, there ain’t nobody here” in the most old-timey harmonica playing, “I wrote a song regarding it” kinda way. What does your inner playtime voice sound?
