What Adults with ADHD Need to Know , ADHD in Adults

http://adhdinadults.com/ Learn how healthcare professionals can better educate their patients about Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and how to facilitate the conversations surrounding ADHD from Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program. Rostain offers doctors and/or PCPs guidance on how to educate patients about adult ADHD and set them up for successful treatment.

When discussing ADHD for the first time with a patient, the doctor should help the patient identify some of their strengths as well as their weaknesses as they relate to ADHD. Highlighting positive characteristics helps give patient hope and reminds the patient there is support available for managing their disorder. Encouraging patients to learn about changes in their home environment and providing other strategies for patients to cope with ADHD is also encouraged.

Doctors should discuss expectations regarding treatment options early. In order to effectively do so, physicians should be aware of the prescription options available for treating patients (stimulants and non-stimulants). Healthcare professionals should also know about local cognitive therapy resources that are available to help patients manage their ADHD.

One kind of barrier that patients may have is overcoming behavioral problems, such as procrastination. Another barrier is a lack of confidence, due to the interference ADHD has had over the course of the patient’s life. These barriers can result in compensatory strategies that can interfere with coping strategies. Cognitive therapy can help patients reduce symptoms and improve functioning without medication and knowing its advantages is important to counseling patients.

Adult ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment: Patient Story , ADHD in Adults

featured image

http://adhdinadults.com/ Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can inhibit people from functioning at their highest potential and is often the cause or a contributing factor to problems in a patient’s professional and personal life. Robert Tudisco is joined by Lenard Adler, an expert in adult ADHD, to show the benefits that patients get when they are diagnosed and treated.

After his child was diagnosed with ADHD, Tudisco sought treatment. Parents often gain insight into their own behavior after diagnosing ADHD symptoms in children. Adler suggests that adults with ADHD be screened by healthcare professionals if the child has been diagnosed. Tudisco was one of those people. He said that he struggled with time management, multitasking, and was having difficulty completing administrative tasks.

Adult ADHD can also affect personal relationships. Tudisco was concerned about his ability to be a better husband and father, so he sought help. He also learned about ADHD and heard stories from other patients. Tudisco was given a non-stimulant drug that helped him manage ADHD. He has been able to overcome many of the difficulties he faced before his diagnosis.

Adler is the Director of NYU School of Medicine’s Adult ADHD Program. Robert Tudisco, Esq. Robert Tudisco, Esq. is the Executive Director for ADHD Coaching, Adult ADHD. Please visit the link for more information about Adult ADHD. Our website with

http://adhdinadults.com/ Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can inhibit people from functioning at their highest potential and is often the cause or a contributing factor to problems in a patient’s professional and personal life. Adult ADHD expert, Lenard Adler, joins Robert Tudisco to illustrate the benefits patients receive when diagnosed and treated for ADHD.

Tudisco sought help for ADHD shortly after his child was tested and diagnosed. Often after identifying ADHD symptoms in children, parents gain insight on their own behaviors. For that reason, Adler recommends that healthcare professions screen adults for ADHD if their child has been diagnosed. Such was the case for Tudisco, who noted that at work he was having problems with time management, paying attention to multiple things at once and completing administrative tasks.

Personal relationships can also suffer due to adult ADHD. Concerned about being a better father and husband, Tudisco sought help and became educated with information on ADHD and stories about other patients. He was prescribed a non-stimulant medication that has helped him cope with his ADHD and has since been able to overcome some of the obstacles that he was unable to manage prior to his diagnosis.
