What is Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects the way children focus and pay attention. It can also impact their ability to complete schoolwork and social activities.

ADHD can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms often overlap with those of other conditions or traumatic events. Your doctor will look for a pattern of problems that can’t be explained by any other factor.

Signs and Symptoms of ADHD

There are many signs and symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

In children, inattention looks like problems with focusing on schoolwork and listening to teachers or other people’s instructions. It may also look like forgetting homework or other tasks.

Some kids with ADHD also have problems controlling their emotions, which can cause problems at home and in relationships. They might act out or show anger in ways that aren’t appropriate or risky for the situation.

During adolescence, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior may lessen. However, these symptoms may remain.

They may interrupt other people, talk too much, or try to get things their own way. They might push, grab, or get into fights with other people.

The most important thing to remember is that these symptoms aren’t normal for young kids. If you notice them in your child, talk to your doctor about it.

Getting an accurate diagnosis is crucial for finding the right treatment. A mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, can perform a thorough evaluation to make the diagnosis. This requires gathering information from multiple sources, including the ADHD symptom checklist, standardized behavior rating scales, a detailed history of current and past functioning, and interviews with family members, teachers, or others who know the person well.

Types of ADHD

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) defines three types of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, primarily hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. For each type, physicians use a specific set of behavioral symptoms to determine the diagnosis.

Inattentive: People with this type of ADHD have trouble staying focused on things for long periods of time. They may easily lose track of tasks, forget appointments or even forget to return phone calls.

Interrupts others: Adults with this type of ADHD often interrupt conversations and intrude on people’s space. They also have a hard time waiting their turn, which can make it difficult for them to complete tasks in school and work.

Hyperactive: Children and adults with this type of ADHD run around and climb where it’s not appropriate. They can also get up from a chair, stand, or walk away from their desk, or even from an assigned post at work or school before they’re supposed to.

This is the most common type of ADHD and is most often diagnosed in children. It’s also more common in boys than girls. It’s also more common among children who come from under-resourced communities, such as those that are poor or in rural areas.

Causes of ADHD

There is no single cause for ADHD, but there are a variety of factors that contribute to its development. These include genetics, toxins, exposure to substances during prenatal development, and certain medical conditions.

Genetics are the most obvious and important cause of ADHD, but they don’t explain everything. Other factors that can contribute to the disorder are family stress, parenting styles, and environmental and social factors.

In children with ADHD, there are also differences in brain anatomy and electrical activity. This makes it difficult for the brain to function properly.

One possible explanation for this is that kids with ADHD tend to have less dopamine in their brains. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that helps your child feel good about themselves when they do certain things.

This lack of dopamine in the brain may lead to impulsive behavior that doesn’t have a good reward for your child. For example, if your daughter wants to ride the neighbor’s horse, she will do it even though she doesn’t get much reward from it.

There are a number of treatment options for ADHD, including medication and behavioral therapy. Psychiatrists and child psychologists can help your child develop better social skills, organization, and self-control.

How is ADHD Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of ADHD is a complex process that includes testing, interviews, and medical evaluations. These tests are usually performed by a mental health provider or primary care physician.

The doctor will use information gathered by you, your child’s teachers, and other caregivers to make the diagnosis. They will also ask you for a detailed psychiatric and medical history.

A hyperactive/impulsive type of ADHD is diagnosed when a child has six or more of the following symptoms. These include running or climbing where it’s not appropriate, fidgeting with their hands or feet, squirming frequently, and interrupting others while talking or playing.

This type of ADHD is most common in children. These kids often get in trouble at school because they’re constantly distracted or aren’t paying attention. They can be loud and obnoxious.

An inattentive type of ADHD is diagnosed when a child doesn’t have the symptoms of hyperactivity or impulsivity. These symptoms include problems paying attention, daydreaming, or seeming distracted.

The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) provides guidelines for making an ADHD diagnosis. The symptoms of inattentive ADHD are often overlooked, but they have a significant impact on life. These symptoms can include getting in hot water with teachers or parents, being underperforming in school, or clashing with other children over not playing by the rules.

Treatsments for ADHD

There are many effective treatments for ADHD, ranging from behavioral intervention to prescription medication. Medications can help control symptoms and reduce related problems such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and antisocial behavior.

Stimulant medications improve communication between multiple areas of the brain, which can improve attention, concentration, and self-control. Methylphenidate (sample brand names: Concerta, Focalin, Metadate, Methylin, Ritalin) and dextroamphetamine (brand name Adderall) are the most common stimulants used to treat ADHD.

Several nonstimulant medications are also available. Atomoxetine (brand name Strattera) is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, which works by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the prefrontal cortex, which can reduce behavioral problems associated with ADHD.

In addition to medications, psychotherapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and family counseling are often recommended. Studies show that these interventions can help patients with ADHD manage their symptoms and improve their relationships with others.

Treatment for ADHD should be designed to address the specific needs of each patient and their family. The most important goals are to improve control of ADHD symptoms, increase coping skills, and improve social relationships.

ADHD in Adults

If you have symptoms of ADHD in adulthood, it’s important to seek treatment. This will help you better understand the condition and manage your symptoms. It can also give you more confidence and a better appreciation of your strengths.

A proper diagnosis requires a thorough clinical evaluation that includes observation, self-reporting, and mental-status testing. It often involves going back to school years, reviewing family history, and evaluating comorbid conditions that often coexist with ADHD (comorbid disorders).

One of the main treatments for adult ADHD is medication, but there are several other therapies that may be helpful as well. These include psychotherapy, behavior management strategies, and support from immediate family members.

Another treatment option is the use of stimulants, which can help adults with ADHD concentrate, be less impulsive and feel more calm. Stimulants are prescribed by a doctor, and they are typically used in combination with behavioral therapy.

In addition, many people with ADHD struggle with issues with executive functioning (the brain’s ability to prioritize and organize thoughts and actions). This can lead to problems with memory, planning and decision-making. These difficulties can also cause difficulty with work and home tasks. They can affect relationships, finances, and other aspects of an individual’s life.

ADHD Medication

ADHD medications help improve attention, focus and concentration. They are used to treat symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The most common type of medication is a stimulant.

Stimulant medications (methylphenidate and amphetamines) work by increasing levels of two brain chemicals called dopamine and norepinephrine. They also can be helpful for people who feel jittery or anxious when they have ADHD.

Methylphenidate is the most widely prescribed medicine, and it usually doesn’t cause serious long-term problems. However, it can make you lose appetite or have trouble sleeping. It can also raise your blood pressure and heart rate, especially when you first start taking it.

Your health care team will help you choose the right medication and dose for your symptoms and conditions. They will also monitor your body to make sure the medicine works and doesn’t cause side effects.

You may need to try several different medicines before you find the one that works best for you. Your doctor can recommend a few options, including short-acting and long-acting stimulants.

Long-acting formulas stay in your body for longer, helping you feel focused throughout the day. They can be easier for some people to take than short-acting formulas, and they are cheaper to buy.

FACTS: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a common mental disorder. Symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Parents may notice these symptoms in toddlers, but ADHD cannot be properly identified until age 4. The disorder is often diagnosed during elementary school when it becomes clear that a child does not pay attention, moves excessively and exhibits other problems. For teens, symptoms of hyperactivity such as fidgeting, restlessness and impatience can be more pronounced. For adults, impulsivity, inattention and other aspects of ADHD can impact daily life. Correct diagnosis of ADHD is vital and often perplexing since many of the core symptoms are similar to everyday childhood behaviors. Parents are often exasperated by their children not listening, fidgeting, having difficulty waiting, becoming distracted and other wayward behaviors. Thus it can be difficult to distinguish between normal age-appropriate emotional growth and evidence of a psychiatric condition. Unfortunately, as with many mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, there is no definitive way to diagnose ADHD. Some mental health and medical professionals believe that ADHD has been overdiagnosed. The rising number of ADHD cases in recent decades is staggering. In the 1970s about 1% of kids were considered to have ADHD. By the 1990s the presumed rate was over 3%. Today ADHD is thought to impact 5% of children and over 2% of adults. It is about twice as prevalent in boys than girls. An even higher percentage of children get diagnosed, more than what many experts think is appropriate. Even though some people are misdiagnosed and take medications for a condition they possibly do not have, there is no doubt that ADHD is real. Treatment is key to minimize the risk for serious social, learning and other mental health problems. It is best not to seek simple explanations and proposed medical remedies that promise fast results. Most important is to learn.

Treating Hyperactivity with Stimulants? | Psychiatrist Explains ADHD Treatment

I often get asked by doctors, medical students etc, why would you give stimulants in ADHD when people are already so hyperactive? ADHD is a fascinating condition, and the diagnosis is so important as getting on the right treatment can revolutionize a persons life.

ADHD is characterised by inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive symptoms, and to understand why stimulants help, we need to talk about the role of dopamine and noradrenaline in a part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. Psychiatrists love the prefrontal cortex. On this video I’ll explain some neurobiology and then how stimulants help to treat inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Causes, Symptoms, Treatments & More…

featured image

Is it hard for your child to sit still? Does your child act without thinking first? Does your child start but not finish things? If so, your child may have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nearly everyone shows some of these behaviors at times, but ADHD lasts more than 6 months and causes problems in school, at home and in social situations.

ADHD is more common in boys than girls. It affects 3-5 percent of all American children.

The main features of ADHD are

Inattention
Hyperactivity
Impulsivity

No one knows exactly what causes ADHD. It sometimes runs in families, so genetics may be a factor. There may also be environmental factors.

A complete evaluation by a trained professional is the only way to know for sure if your child has ADHD. Treatment may include medicine to control symptoms, therapy, or both. Structure at home and at school is important. Parent training may also help.

The truth about ADHD Masking.
People with ADHD don't always feel safe around others who don't have the disorder. We may feel judged and stigmatized by society, and as a coping mechanism, we hide or mask our ADHD symptoms to avoid feeling seen.
Masking doesn't always develop in adults. Sometimes it's learned during childhood. Parents and other grown-ups would sometimes tell us to: « stop fidgeting », « stop talking so much », and "pay attention." While they mean well, children with ADHD symptoms learn that being themselves isn't safe, so they adopt a mask as a survival tool.
Another reason for masking is that most people with ADHD are misunderstood. We can't always comfortably be ourselves around others because we may be labeled rude or weird. And what can ADHD masking look like in different situations? Here are some common examples.
There are times when someone is speaking, and we listen or focus too hard on their words, so we don't miss any details.
Hyperactivity is sometimes masked by trying to feign calmness. But in reality, our mind jumps from one thing to another, and we can't correctly process what's happening at the moment. At social gatherings, we may try to copy other people's behavior to fit in. This can mean suppressing leg bouncing or simply nodding at someone talking, so we don't interrupt. Masking our symptoms can be exhausting, and truthfully, its disadvantages far outweigh its benefits.

One of the pitfalls of masking is that it can end up delaying our ADHD diagnosis. We hide it so well that we may not even recognize that there's already a problem. Remember getting an official diagnosis can help get us a proper treatment plan from a psychologist.
Another risk of masking is developing anxiety and depression. Because we bottle up so much stress without expressing it, the feelings might surface as fear, worry, loneliness, or even anger.
Lastly, we're not able to live as our genuine selves and express what we truly feel. We may feel that we're becoming someone else entirely because of our mask.

Living with ADHD

By Mack | Ready to “wear it out loud?” Merch store open, SHOP NOW: | Subscribe: | Record your story @ or our iPhone app for a chance to get animated. Comment, like, share this story.

ADHD stinks! That mostly sums it up for Mack, not completely, but mostly.

It’s hard to focus and concentrate, and so at school Mack’s grades started falling because she would find herself paying attention to a ton of things that weren’t important, or at least that didn’t have much to do with what they were studying. For instance, in Math, instead of paying attention to the teacher and the work on the board, she would be transfixed by a tiny crumb sitting on the edge of her desk.

Mack has had ADHD for as long as she can remember, so she figures she’s had it since she was born. And, it has also been really hard for as long as she can remember. Sometimes people think she’s weird but she’s just Mack, a kid with ADHD.

Living with ADHD comes with its own side effects, like depression, and anxiety, and she’s been living with those since she was in 4th grade. Now she’s in 8th. ADHD treatment also comes with a lot of pills and medications. Mack has been taking as many as five different pills every day for her entire life. That’s a lot of medicine.

Now she takes three pills a day: one antidepressant, one medication to help her stay focused, and one pill to help her sleep at night. See, ADHD also sometimes brings on insomnia, which is difficulty either falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early.

Mack has had insomnia since she was in 3rd grade, and at one point it got so bad that she couldn’t sleep at all – she stayed awake for four days straight – she kept falling asleep in school, literally passing out from being so tired. One day she passed out during recess and opened her eyes to find all of her friends standing over her, staring at her.

In Mack’s opinion, ADHD is one of the hardest conditions to live with that there is. She’s still learning to deal with it. It comes with so many side effects, and living with ADHD just makes you really self conscious. People who don’t know her probably think she is really weird, especially because when she is feeling really overwhelmed with anxiety she finds she has to find a quiet place, curl up in a tight little ball, and not talk with anyone. And that can go on for up to an hour or two before she starts to feel better.

It’s been really tough living with ADHD, and Mack’s great hope is that she can learn to manage it and overcome the effects and side effects as an adult. BUT, the one thing Mack knows for sure is that living with ADHD, and fighting to overcome it, has made her a stronger and better person, while at the same time, of course, it also is responsible for the parts of her she could do without.

It’s hard for her to explain – Living with ADHD is definitely a burden, but in a weird way it’s also a special thing to have – it boosts your creativity and imagination. It has helped to shape who Mack is today and she is more than okay with that! She has ADHD and she’s still learning to deal with it.

ADHA is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. They both relate to the same chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. Concentration can be extremely difficult with ADHD and ADD. Diagnosis and treatment from a Doctor are necessary. 11 million people have ADHD.

Prone to Procrastination? It's decided that I will do it tomorrow. Then I put it off yet again. And so on. Procrastinating can be frustrating, costly, and disheartening. Why do I keep doing it? Why do you put off doing it?

There are many reasons. There are many reasons why I procrastinate. I have learned to distinguish between the reasons I don't take on certain tasks or decisions. This has nothing to do wit failure, laziness or lack of willpower. "

Patreon -
Website - /

Are there good reasons to procrastinate?

Sometimes I realize there are many reasons to procrastinate, fear of failure, or fear of success. If I do a great work, then everyone will expect me to do great work, or perfection. You can lose trust in yourself, end relationships and get fired if you procrastinate.

You also have to consider the long-term cost in terms of self-esteem and self-confidence. There are also the potential financial setbacks. I'm referring to the career and financial setbacks. These can be as simple as late fees or fines for not paying the required amount or having to pay an additional fee. However, there may be valid reasons to procrastinate in certain circumstances. Let me simply say that procrastinating is a way to not do what you want, need, or desire to do. Yes.

I think you know what I'm thinking. You're asking "What?" Keep reading. To determine if your procrastination is for a good, rational, logical, or unavoidable reason, you need to identify the reason. If it is logically sensible, unavoidable or logical, then you can let that task go for now. Okay, I was going to put it off, but everything is fine.

Reason #1 for Procrastinating - Waiting on something you don't have
The first reason you procrastinate is because you are waiting on someone or something.

Reason #2 to Procrastinate: Doubts about a Person Involved
You are starting to doubt the person or people you are involved with.

Perhaps it's a new couple and they love bomb you. It's one thing for someone to say that after six months of being with you, but what about on their second date? If you are just standing in line at a donut shop, and the person behind you says that, you know? Except they are really good donuts (which I know I would), then that's someone you would. I am married, but...

Reason #3: Procrastinate because you need different skills or knowledge

You might need a degree or the right skills, tools and knowledge to fix the oven light bulb.

Reason #4: You're No Longer Committed

It's exciting to ride on a SeaDoo, and you know how it feels. I'm going to start a SeaDoo business, and we'll rent them all out! You know, then the summer is over and you see an ad for charity that could transform the lives for ten children for a decade. Then you change your priorities and discover model railroading.

Reason #5 to Procrastinate: Too Much Mental Effort
You're exhausted because the task is too difficult.

Medications are an important part of the treatment toolkit for many patients with ADHD. They may not work for all people, have side effects, or are not an option for those with comorbid conditions. A holistic treatment plan for ADHD is needed for each child. It must address the symptoms and take into consideration the child's interactions with their family, friends, and school. A comprehensive treatment plan should include a variety of important interventions that can be used with or without medication to help your child succeed.

Sandy Newmark, M.D. explains how ADHD Experts can help children with ADHD.

ADD/ADHD What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Dr. Thomas Brown

featured image

We who run this channel are married to each other and are both ADHD brains – adult ones 😉 We are still trying to understand what this means! This video is a great summary of ADHD.

Thomas E. Brown, PhD discusses ADHD diagnosis, ADHD symptoms and available ADHD treatment options.

Our expert states that ADD/ADHD does not have to do with a personality problem. It is more about the brain’s management system. ADHD does not correlate with intelligence.

Because ADHD was thought to be only a childhood disorder, many adults age fifty and older are only being diagnosed in later life. Often they get tested for ADHD when their adult children or grandchildren are diagnosed with ADHD. Diagnosing ADHD in ages over fifty is a little more difficult because ADHD can be overlooked because of natural cognitive decline. Clinicians must become aware of ADHD and look for it in symptoms of inattentiveness, distraction, forgetfulness, and general difficulties of disorganization. Screen for ADHD!

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common condition. Genes may play a role. GAD may also be caused by stress.

This disorder can be acquired by anyone, even children. Most people who have the disorder say they have felt anxious for as long a time as they can recall. GAD is more common in women than it is in men.
