NCMH research champion Laura discusses why she chose to take part in the Centre's mental health research.
ABOUT NCMH
The National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) is working to find out more about what causes mental health problems such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD and PTSD.
NCMH is made up of researchers from Cardiff, Swansea and Bangor Universities, and funded by Health and Care Research Wales.
We aim to improve life for people affected by mental health problems by supporting and undertaking mental health research, raising awareness of mental health issues and fighting stigma.
Together we can make a difference for mental health.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health problem that usually appears in childhood, generally from the age of 7, and is classified as a behavioral disorder. It is characterized, hence its name, because children are hyperactive (excessive physical activity), impulsive and have problems keeping their attention on a single activity continuously.
All this leads to problems in school performance, as well as in their personal relationships with friends, teachers and their own family.
Causes of ADHD
The causes of ADHD are not known, although the different studies that have been carried out in this regard suggest that there is an important genetic component, to the point that some experts consider that there is a 76% chance that the children of a person with this disorder also develop it. Likewise, the most recent studies consider that the family environment (unstructured homes) and the social environment (conflictive relationships) can only act as drivers of the symptoms, but not contribute to the appearance of the disease.
