The first installment of What in the Q & A answers three questions from some of my twitter followers:
1. If caffeine gives me anxiety, will ADHD medications do the same? 2. How long does it normally take for medication to start working? 3. Is it okay to take days off from taking my meds?
I answer each question in depth and explain the science behind non-stimulants vs. stimulants and the mechanisms of action for vyvanse and adderall. I also give a few tips for those of you that may be just starting out on your ADHD treatment journey!
As always, everyone’s body is different, so the things I discuss may not apply to everyone – but I do talk about ways to help improve the efficacy of your medications, foods and drinks to avoid, and your different options for treatment once you get your ADHD diagnosis!
I want to remind everyone that I am not a doctor, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, counselor, or pharmacist. I’m simply a grad student and mama with ADHD-C, and I want to make information about ADHD fun and accessible! If you have not been diagnosed with ADHD, none of my videos are meant to be diagnostic.

Transcript of video:
What I want to say to my mom, who “drugged” me:
Thank you. Thank you for listening when I told you I was struggling. Thank you for standing up for me when my dad tried to dismiss what I was dealing with as “normal.” I now understand ADHD is highly genetic and it’s likely he felt that way because he probably had ADHD himself.
Thank you for taking me to get a proper evaluation so I understand my brain’s differences and don’t feel like it’s just all my fault. Thank you for taking me to a psychiatrist, month after month, to find a treatment and dose that worked for me. And for taking me back month after month after month after month — I know you were busy, and yet I never ran out of medication because you took the time to take me to every appointment.
Thank you for ignoring the people who judged you. I know there were many.
Thank you for understanding that there was a difference between my sister occasionally forgetting her homework and me losing or forgetting something almost every day. Thank you for understanding that while all children can be fidgety or impulsive or get distracted, I struggled way more than the other kids my age. I now understand it’s because ADHD brains develop differently.
You didn’t know that, you hadn’t done the research I have, but you listened to me when I told you I needed help.
Because of you, I got the treatment I needed, I did better in school, I felt more confident and able to reach my potential. Because of you, I never had to self medicate like so many ADHDers I know. I never sank into depression. I never gave up on myself. I never felt misunderstood. You understood. You believed me.
And when you did, when you took me to a doctor who could explain to me what was happening in my brain, you took away so much shame.
http://adhdinadults.com/ Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can inhibit people from functioning at their highest potential and is often the cause or a contributing factor to problems in a patient's professional and personal life. Robert Tudisco is joined by Lenard Adler, an expert in adult ADHD, to show the benefits that patients get when they are diagnosed and treated.
After his child was diagnosed with ADHD, Tudisco sought treatment. Parents often gain insight into their own behavior after diagnosing ADHD symptoms in children. Adler suggests that adults with ADHD be screened by healthcare professionals if the child has been diagnosed. Tudisco was one of those people. He said that he struggled with time management, multitasking, and was having difficulty completing administrative tasks.
Adult ADHD can also affect personal relationships. Tudisco was concerned about his ability to be a better husband and father, so he sought help. He also learned about ADHD and heard stories from other patients. Tudisco was given a non-stimulant drug that helped him manage ADHD. He has been able to overcome many of the difficulties he faced before his diagnosis.
Adler is the Director of NYU School of Medicine's Adult ADHD Program. Robert Tudisco, Esq. Robert Tudisco, Esq. is the Executive Director for ADHD Coaching, Adult ADHD. Please visit the link for more information about Adult ADHD. Our website with free resources

Hey bubs, today we’ll be discussing the popular ADHD medication Elvanse / Vyvanse / Tyvense / Lisdexamfetamine and my experiences with it. We will discuss the side effects and how it affects me, as well as why it is better than other ADHD medications like Concerta/Ritalin and Adderall.
After trying various methods to manage my ADHD, including diet, meditation, exercise, and other therapies, I was finally diagnosed with ADHD – Combination Type (both ADD/ADHD). Each of these methods worked in their own way, but I preferred medication because I had to be motivated, able to control my impulses and have the discipline to follow through with these lifestyle enhancements. My ADHD was too severe for me to continue using them all and needed medical intervention.
Now I’m extremely happy and productive.

To my mom who “drugged” and abused me, I’d like to say
We are grateful. Thank you for listening to me when I said I was struggling. You stood up for me, even though my father tried to dismiss the fact that I was having trouble with ADHD as normal. ADHD is highly genetic. I understand that ADHD is likely to be a result of his own experience with ADHD.
Thank you for taking me to a thorough evaluation to help me understand my brain’s differences. I am grateful that you took me to see a psychiatrist every month to help me find the right treatment for me. Thank you for taking me back every month, even though you were busy. I was never short of medication because you took the extra time to bring me to each appointment.
I am grateful that you ignored the people who judged your actions. There were many.
We are grateful that you understood the difference between my sister sometimes forgetting her homework and me almost daily losing or forgetting something. You understand that children all have impulsive tendencies or can become fidgety, but I struggled more than other children my age. It’s because ADHD brains develop differently.
It was not something you knew, and you didn’t do the same research as I did. But you were able to listen to me when I said I needed help.
You helped me get the treatment that I needed. I was able to do better at school and felt more confident. You saved me from the need to self-medicate like many ADHDers. I never sank into depression. I didn’t give up on myself. I never felt misunderstood. You understood. You believed in me.
You took me to see a doctor to explain what was going on in my brain.

How Does rTMS Work?
rTMS is a medical grade magnet that is used to balance the speed of abnormal operating nerves in the brain. The magnet sends a signal that can be varied to stimulate or slow down the nerves in the specific regions. For example:
rTMS FOR DEPRESSION: The normal pattern that scientists expect brains to work at is 15 – 20 pulses per second (pps) on the left front portion of the brain, also called the frontal lobe. Patients whose brains run below 15pps have symptoms that typically include depression.
rTMS FOR ANXIETY: Normally, the left side of the brain works at a higher frequency than the right side. When this pattern reverses, and the right brain works at a higher frequency, the individual often exhibits symptoms that doctors call anxiety. This right brain dominance may be due to the right brain working too fast, or the left brain not working fast enough, or both.
rTMS FOR OTHER CONDITIONS: We can also use rTMS to improve abnormal frequencies in the brain; either stimulating or quieting it, to treat a wide variety of conditions.

In this video, my guest shares his subjective experience with Adderall addiction, a commonly prescribed amphetamine for ADHD. He goes over the effects of the substance including the Adderall high and notorious Adderall comedown. Speed addiction can cause a ton of problems and lead to an unmanageable life. If you struggle with an Adderall problem or Vyvanse addiction it’s never too late to reach out for help. Quitting Adderall and staying sober is possible as our guest demonstrates. No matter how addicted to Adderall you are – there is hope.
Did you know that 7% of children aged 3 to 17 have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder? The symptoms of anxiety can range from overthinking, not being able to sleep, worrying too much, or at worse, not being able to perform day to day activities like eating, exercising, or going to school. The types of anxiety disorders include panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder. We have a playlist for it here: Do you find yourself being anxious most of the time? Then perhaps, it's time to get professional help.
If you suspect you might have anxiety, and you want to get it diagnosed, we recommend finding professional help.
We want to remind you that you're not alone. To remind you that, we also made a video on the things people with anxiety secretly do alone: E

*What are ADHD meds?* Most ADHD drugs are stimulants. They stimulate and activate your central nervous system within 15 or 20 minutes of popping a pill. Caffeine is a stimulant, but ADHD drugs are a LOT more powerful. Like Adderall, which is one of the most commonly prescribed stimulant medications in the U.S. The active ingredient is a version of amphetamine, which has been around for decades.
*What is ADHD?* ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and it’s one of the most common mental health conditions in people under 18. It’s like having 100 tabs open on your browser, but in your brain, so you end up paying attention to the WRONG stuff instead of focusing on what you actually need to get done. In the U.S., Adderall is the most common drug prescribed to treat ADHD.
*How do ADHD drugs help people with ADHD?* A lot of it has to do with a specific neurotransmitter in the brain that you’ve probably heard of before – dopamine. It’s key when it comes to your brain’s reward pathways. When you have a normal level of dopamine hanging out in the synapses of your brain, you’re able to maintain motivation when you’re doing something you’re not interested in. But for someone with ADHD, there’s less dopamine hanging out in the synapses. So, there’s less motivation to get things done. To get that dopamine level up, there’s more of a desire for short-term rewards. ADHD meds work by helping dopamine to stick around longer in the synapses. For people with ADHD, they can stay focused and avoid distractions, and that can be a total game-changer when it comes to getting stuff done at school or at work.
*So what happens when someone WITHOUT ADHD takes an ADHD drug like Adderall?* Many studies in the lab don’t show that people without ADHD get any boost to their cognition when they take ADHD drugs, but real-life situations like exams and writing papers haven’t fully been tested. But many studies do show that these kinds of meds make you think you did better than you actually did. And there are worrisome side effects that can hurt you long term.
