In this interview video, double board certified child & adolescent psychiatrist Dr Domenick Sportelli and MedCircle host Kyle Kittleson walk through the 5 signs someone grew up with bipolar disorder.

00: 00 Intro
00: 22 1. Duration of symptoms
01: 04 2. Signs show in adolescence (usually)
01: 17 3. Depression/mania look “different”
02: 41 4. MAY have been misdiagnosed
03: 23 5. Behavioral issues “out of normal range”

Bipolar disorder symptoms (also referred to as manic depression) can be difficult to spot in kids and teenagers. Dr. Domenick Sportelli is a world renowned psychiatrist and knows the signs of bipolar disorder better than the average psychologist.

Bipolar disorder in children is often misdiagnosed as ADHD, depression, anxiety, and more. (And in adulthood, it is often mistaken for borderline personality disorder or vice versa.) But bipolar disorder can also be over-diagnosed in children. So this mental health education is more important than ever!

After watching this video, you’ll better understand bipolar disorder symptoms like manic episodes, hypomania, bipolar depression, mood swings, and more.

Anxiety vs Mania - How To Tell The Difference

featured image

Anxiety disorders can occur along with bipolar disorder and there is some overlap in the way anxiety and mania look that it’s not always clear which it is. This is important. This is because early warning signs of depression and mania can help you to intervene before the episode escalates. You can adjust your mood stabilizer if you feel there is a manic episode coming. If it is anxiety, you won’t want that.

These symptoms are similar to anxiety and mania.
Racing thoughts
Concentration problems
Mood irritability
Inability to fall asleep
Restlessness and agitation

Anxiety can be described as a feeling of fear, anxiety, or uneasiness. Although it can manifest in physical manifestations, anxiety starts with a feeling. Mania refers to hyperarousal. It is like an internal motor with the dial turned up.

In some ways, anxiety can be compared to mania. Although they have some similarities, anxiety and mania are different. Mania affects your body and makes you feel ill.
