http://adhdinadults.com/ Anthony Rostain MD/MA, the Medical Director for the Penn Medicine Adult ADHD Program emphasizes the importance of knowing your patients when prescribing medication for the treatment of ADHD. Understanding the traits of "at risk" patients can help primary care providers identify the potential for medication abuse.
Most ADHD medications act as a stimulant and have the potential to be abused, especially in colleges and universities where prescriptions may be diverted from the original patient. This type of misuse is more common in colleges because stimulants serve as cognitive performance enhancers that students use while studying or and can sometimes be used recreationally.
Alternative, low risk, stimulant medications exist to treat ADHD. These include slow releasing (extended release amphetamines) that are stimulant medications with a reduced risk of abuse. Three non-stimulant medications are also available for ADHD patients.
Physicians may be concerned with medical and legal consequences that can occur if a patient is abusing or diverting federally controlled medication, such as Adderall. It is becoming increasingly common for Doctors to use careful documentation, such as a detailed contract about the medication and its use, which is signed by the patient. Doctors diagnosing ADHD in adults can use such contracts to avoid legal problems.

Does your young child have ADHD? Deciding if your child should be tested for ADHD during the preschool years is not easy. Most families wait until children start school before an evaluation. But when needed, ADHD can be diagnosed as early as three years old.
What do you need to know before seeking an evaluation? And how can you and your child’s health care provider determine what behaviors are part of normal development and which ones signal possible ADHD symptoms? Dr. Mark Mahone will talk with participants about ADHD in preschoolers, best practices for treatment and obstacles that families often face in getting their children needed help. He’ll also share with parents strategies they can use to enhance healthy brain development and reduce learning vulnerabilities in preschoolers.
Dr. Samoon Ahmad is a practicing psychopharmacologist and psychiatrist. He explains what happens to someone's brain and body if they take Adderall recreationally.

0:00 Introduction 1:26 Causes of Social anxiety disorder 2:29 Symptoms of Social anxiety disorder 3:23 Diagnosis of Social anxiety disorder 4:05 Treatment of Social anxiety disorder
Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder characterized by sentiments of fear and anxiety in social situations, causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some aspects of daily life.[2]:15 These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others. Individuals with social anxiety disorder fear negative evaluations from other people.
Physical symptoms often include excessive blushing, excess sweating, trembling, palpitations, and nausea. Stammering may be present, along with rapid speech. Panic attacks can also occur under intense fear and discomfort. Some sufferers may use alcohol or other drugs to reduce fears and inhibitions at social events. It is common for sufferers of social phobia to self-medicate in this fashion, especially if they are undiagnosed, untreated, or both; this can lead to alcohol use disorder, eating disorders or other kinds of substance use disorders. SAD is sometimes referred to as an illness of lost opportunities where “individuals make major life choices to accommodate their illness”.[3][4] According to ICD-10 guidelines, the main diagnostic criteria of social phobia are fear of being the focus of attention, or fear of behaving in a way that will be embarrassing or humiliating, avoidance and anxiety symptoms.[5] Standardized rating scales can be used to screen for social anxiety disorder and measure the severity of anxiety.
The first line of treatment for social anxiety disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).[6] Medications such as SSRIs are effective for social phobia, especially paroxetine.[7] CBT is effective in treating this disorder, whether delivered individually or in a group setting.[8] The cognitive and behavioral components seek to change thought patterns and physical reactions to anxiety-inducing situations. The attention given to social anxiety disorder has significantly increased since 1999 with the approval and marketing of drugs for its treatment. Prescribed medications include several classes of antidepressants: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).[9] Other commonly used medications include beta blockers and benzodiazepines.

Hypochondria or hypochondria refers to a condition where a person is overly concerned about a serious illness. The meaning of hypochondria is an old concept that has been repeatedly redefined. [1] Hypochondria is a condition that causes a misperception of the body’s condition or mind. This can be despite not having formally diagnosed. Hypochondriacs are people who have hypochondriasis. Hypochondriacs are overly concerned about any psychological or physical symptoms they notice, regardless of how minor, and believe they are suffering from a serious illness. [3]
Hypochondria can persist even after a doctor has examined a person. This is also known as hypochondriaism, which refers to the condition of being in a hypochondriatic or acute hypochondria. [4] Hypochondriacs often focus their worries on one particular symptom, such as muscle fatigue, gastro-intestinal problems or palpitations. Hypochondria must be diagnosed within six months. [5]
International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) classifies hypochondriasis as a mental and behavioral disorder. [6] The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) defines the disorder as a somatoform condition[7]. One study has found that it affects about 3% of primary care patients. [8] The 2013 DSM-5 replaced hypochondriasis by the diagnoses somatic symptom disorder (75%) or illness anxiety disorder (25%).. [9][10]

This is my review of the whole process from referral to diagnosis, treatment, and nearly a year of taking stimulants for ADHD.
If you think you have ADHD your GP can refer you for an ADHD assessment with your local provider or you can choose to go down the private route. NHS waiting times across the UK, especially in England, can take anything up to FIVE YEARS in some areas, with the majority of cases taking at least two years just to get an initial assessment.
April 2022 Update Psychiatry-UK is fully booked until at least October 2022 and is currently not taking bookings. The clinic will get in touch with referred patients as soon as possible, and they aim to schedule new clients in chronological order of the date their referrals were received. Their website is updated on a regular basis with new information.
Since posting this video a number of other clinics have been used through Right To Choose in England. The ADHD UK website has some useful information, including a letter you can send to your GP if your Right To Choose is declined.

After waiting for two years for ADHD treatment through the NHS in England I eventually received treatment from Psychiatry-UK, a psychiatry service providing Adult ADHD Diagnosis and ADHD treatments virtually.
My own ADHD diagnosis in early childhood is in my medical records but the local ADHD provision rejected my referral to their service after several attempts by my doctor, because they would not re-diagnose ADHD and only treat patients that have been diagnosed by their service, leaving me in limbo, and potentially thousands of others.
Private ADHD treatment in the UK is relatively expensive, and not always accessible. I asked my GP to refer me to Psychiatry-UK (P-UK) for assessment and treatment under The NHS Choice Framework which gives you the Right To Choose your treatment provider. My GP agreed and the local commissioners agreed to fund my treatment.
Within two weeks of the GP referral, I had a virtual appointment with a psychiatrist specialising in ADHD and received a diagnosis (again!) of ADHD. Just having this in writing was a relief and a huge weight off my shoulders. The titration process began a week or two later and once I found a medication that seemed to help, my GP agreed to a shared care agreement so that I can now get prescriptions easily and via the NHS instead of paying hundreds of pounds each month.
I hope this has been useful. See some links below to find out what ADDtrepreneur is about and to learn more about adult ADHD in the UK.

The rising rate of ADHD has many parents wondering if the diagnosis is too subjective.
"I think there would probably be some chemical imbalance or something they would need to do further testing - other than making that decision or diagnosis just by looking at the child," says dad Kris Willing.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a clinical diagnosis based on a collection of symptoms rather than a single test. That opens it up to interpretation. If you wonder whether your child has ADHD, work with a doctor who follows nationally recognized standards set forth by governing pediatric and psychiatric groups.
"A lot of people think they can just spot a child and say 'oh that child is hyper active'. Meaning that sure it's an active child, it engages in a lot of gross motor behavior, but that doesn't mean that child has a disorder," says Dr. Elena Reyes, clinical psychologist with Lee Memorial Health System.
A key point in making an ADHD diagnosis is that symptoms must be present in more than one setting. Which is why the evaluation includes observations from parents, caregivers and teachers.
"When we actually do an evaluation for ADHD we really try to do a thorough evaluation. So what you're doing is not only observing the child, you're getting information from the parents but you're also getting information from the teacher. Because one of the things we know the demand characteristics in the classroom are very different than for example the dinner table or watching TV," says Reyes.
A psychologist, pediatrician or neurologist will rate a child's behavior compared to peers. Symptoms to look out for are: constant motion, fidgeting, distractedness and inability to finish tasks. Evaluations should wait until age seven. And remember, ADHD isn't a blanket for every bothersome behavior.
"It may just be a cause of today's technology- with kids being in front of iPad's and iPhones, tablets, whatever," says Willing.
