The Boy with Big, Big Feelings

From The Boy with Big, Big Feelings Parent Guide by Britney Winn Lee

It is an honor to be the caregivers and stewards of little bodies that house such big hearts! Sensitive children grow up to be empathizers with the world—and they remind us to press into the highs and lows of the moment and to make space for both deep joy and deep grief. It can be overwhelming, however, to guide and raise a highly sensitive child, especially for adults who may not so easily relate to such sensitivity. Here are six suggestions for nurturing kids with big feelings.

Medications to treat Attention Deficit Disorders are effective, with a rapid onset action. ADD medications also help with diagnosis because if someone has a classic response, the diagnosis is supported. Put simply: if you respond to the medication, then it helps confirm that you have ADD. ADD or ADHD medications work by affecting dopamine transmission, creating a nutrient-rich environment for the brain and allowing it to perform normally.

The stimulating treatments for ADD/ADHD are high benefit, low risk situation. Most people don't get side-effects.

Opportunity Gap | ADHD as a "white boy problem"

featured image

What prevents young people of color from recognizing their learning differences and ADHD? According to user researcher Yasmeen Adams, there’s a perception by some that ADHD is a “white boy problem.”

Hosts Julian Saavedra and Marissa Wallace welcome Yasmeen to the show to discuss the results of interviews with dozens of young people of color with ADHD. The hosts ask pointed questions about how experiences differ between Black youth and other people of color. And Yasmeen shares why, as a Black person with ADHD, this research is personally meaningful.

In this episode, I discuss ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder): what it is, the common myths, and the biology and psychology of ADHD.

I will discuss ADHD treatment options, including pharmacologic and behavioral treatments. I also talk about behavioral training protocols that can help improve focus for ADHD patients and people without ADHD. I also discuss the role that dopamine plays in the coordination of 'default-mode" and 'task related' neural networks. Attentional "blinks", or lapses of attention, are discussed as well as how to overcome them. And finally, the importance of actual blinks in time perception, and attention. Finally, I discuss some of the prescription and non-prescription drugs for increasing focus, such as Ritalin and Modafinil, Armodafinil and Armodafinil.

We also discuss the role of technology and cell phones in ADHD and ADHD-like difficulties with focus. Both clinical and basic science scenarios are discussed as well as the applicable tools and resources.

Medications are an important part of the treatment toolkit for many patients with ADHD. But they don’t work for everyone, may carry side effects, and simply aren’t an option for some people with comorbid conditions. Each child with ADHD needs a holistic treatment plan — one that targets symptoms while taking into account the whole child and their interactions with family, friends, school, and community. An effective plan will include various important interventions, used with or without medication, to help your child succeed.

In this hour-long ADHD Experts webinar, Sandy Newmark, M.D., explains how food, exercise and sleep can benefit children with ADHD.
