How to Treat ADHD without Medication in Adults? How to Treat ADHD in Adults?
Some doctors are hesitant to prescribe ADHD medications to adults, especially older adults, who have a greater risk of drug interactions. If you are having trouble with everyday functioning because of ADHD, then trying drug treatment makes sense. If the impact of ADHD is minor and you’ve figured out coping strategies without a formal diagnosis and treatment plan, your doctor may instead advise treatments that don’t involve medications.
Cognitive behavioral therapy
ADHD may have a particularly serious impact on a certain part of your life, such as job performance. A therapist can help you work on areas that need special attention, giving you strategies that can help in specific situations at work and elsewhere.
One widely used approach is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This type of psychotherapy helps people change negative thought patterns into positive, healthier ways of thinking. The idea is that if you change the way you think about a situation, your feelings and behaviors can change, too. For example, CBT may help change "all or nothing" thinking, in which in many people with ADHD tend to think that their accomplishments must be either perfect or a failure.
CBT is very focused on giving you tools to help deal with stresses and challenges in life. Working on self-esteem is often a very important aspect of ADHD treatment.
Emotional therapy
ADHD is not just about paying attention in conversations and in meetings. ADHD can lead to frequent emotional ups and downs, which can hamper relationships and everyday activities. Just waiting in line can make a person with ADHD quite irritable. So can minor setbacks, such as having a project not turn out quite right or having a boss who changes deadlines or who demands more work at the last minute. It may help to find a psychiatrist or another type of therapist and meet regularly to discuss your symptoms and any challenges or successes in your life.
It’s also common for adults with ADHD to have other mental health conditions. An estimated 50% of adults with ADHD, for example, also have an anxiety disorder, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Having ADHD along with another condition can severely interfere with daily functioning.
Neurofeedback
Neurofeedback is a form of treatment that teaches you how to regulate your brain waves in an effort to enhance brain function and mental well-being. Brain activity is monitored through a machine called an electroencephalograph. Brain signals pass from one or more leads placed on your head to a computer, which translates the brain signals into a video or audio display.
People with ADHD often have excessive slow-wave activity in frontal leads, indicating reduced frontal brain activity. Through neurofeedback, you can learn to do tasks that may enhance the function of the prefrontal cortex by suppressing slow-wave activity and increasing higher (that is, faster) frequencies.
The technique is noninvasive and painless. Studies of neurofeedback’s effectiveness have shown mixed results, however. Treatment typically requires 40 to 80 sessions, which can be time-consuming and expensive.

Hi! I am Midnight Victoria. I am a single mother who enjoys playing video games, writing, and getting creative. I love story games, indie games and games with friends. I love all things supernatural and mysterious.
Recently I was diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder. Something I have struggled with since I was very young. Being a victim of bullying in a small town when I was younger meant that I never really had any friends. It made it difficult to be able to practice those social cues that people use within social situations. I would, and sometimes still do, struggle to assess the situations and always imagine worse situations than really are as well as double thinking whatever I do. All my life all I have wanted is to have friends that I can trust and build friendships with people. I am also unbelievably shy and as a result I struggle to be able to talk about anything without double thinking about everything.
Live streaming has helped me to start to come out of my shell. I still have a long way to go, but being able to stream and practice talking to myself has really helped me to be able to talk through the awkwardness. It has helped me learn to not overthink things as much. The Streaming Community is always changing and people come and go from your lives so quickly that it has helped me come to terms with people leaving my life regularly and I don’t get the time to overthink things as much. I am still working on it and have a long way to go, but I am confident that I will get there, so why not join me on my journey and we can navigate it together?

Do you know anyone who has been diagnosed with both Autism and ADHD? Eric and Becca, his guest, discuss their diagnosis and how ADHD manifests differently in women. They also discuss why they are interested in conscientiousness research in this area.
Becca is earning her master's degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and hopes to use her knowledge in individual differences, such as ADHD in personality and training in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, to help organizations create inclusive work environments for employees.
Becca discredits the idea that people with ADHD and Autism aren't conscientious. She discusses her understanding of Autism, how it manifests for her, as well as how she was told she couldn't be on the autism spectrum because she is so smart. Eric talks about the differences between Autism and Aspergers, and the arguments surrounding them.
Becca talks about ADHD and how conscientiousness and gender affect ADHD. She also discusses her withdrawal from people due to her daily struggles. This is what led her into seeking a diagnosis. She discusses her sensory challenges and the constant struggle to be on-time.
Social communication is an executive social function. Eric and Becca talk about the fact that women have a socially wired brain to reflect their environment. They also discuss how Becca interacts with others. Eric asks Eric a hypothetical question about whether a blue pill or a red pill would cure ADHD. Would you consider it?
