Healthy Eating & Eating Disorders - Anorexia, Bulimia, Binging | Huberman Lab Podcast #36

In this episode, I discuss what drives hunger and satiety, and the role our brain, stomach, fat and hormones play in regulating hunger and turning off the desire to eat more. I also address how protein is assimilated better early in the day than it is later in the day, and why those using intermittent fasting might want to shift their feeding window to earlier in the day.

Then I delve into the topic of disorders of eating: Anorexia Nervosa, where people starve themselves and Bulimia Nervosa where people binge and purge their food. I discuss some common myths about Anorexia such as the role of media images increasing the rates of anorexia and the myth of the “perfectionist” anorexic. I also review the symptoms, and the brain and chemical systems disrupted in this condition. I explain how anorexics become hyperaware of the fat content of foods and develop reflexive habits of fat-hyperawareness. Then I discuss the most effective treatments ranging from family-based models to those that target the habitual nature of low-fat/calorie food choices. I also discuss new more experimental clinical trials on MDMA, Psilocybin and Ibogaine for Anorexia, and both their promise and risks.

I review the latest work on binge eating disorder and brain stimulation, drug treatments and thyroid disruption in Bulimia and why the treatments for Bulimia are so similar to those for ADHD. Finally, I discuss “cheat days,” body dysmorphia and the growing list of novel forms of eating disorders start to finish. As always, science and science-based tools are discussed.

Understanding & Controlling Aggression | Huberman Lab Podcast #71

This episode I describe the neural mechanisms that activate and control aggressive states and behaviors and the role of hormones—estrogen and testosterone—in mediating violent and/or competitive aggression. I also describe tools that can be used to modulate the factors that have been shown to ‘prime’ an individual for aggression, including sunlight, estrogen sensitivity, competition within social settings, and overall stress levels, and the hormone cortisol. I discuss how substances such as caffeine and alcohol can impact impulsive behaviors and how nutrition and supplementation can be used to regulate mood and aggression.

*What are ADHD meds?*
Most ADHD drugs are stimulants. They stimulate and activate your central nervous system within 15 or 20 minutes of popping a pill. Caffeine is a stimulant, but ADHD drugs are a LOT more powerful. Like Adderall, which is one of the most commonly prescribed stimulant medications in the U.S. The active ingredient is a version of amphetamine, which has been around for decades.

ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and it’s one of the most common mental health conditions in people under 18. It’s like having 100 tabs open on your browser, but in your brain, so you end up paying attention to the WRONG stuff instead of focusing on what you actually need to get done. In the U.S., Adderall is the most common drug prescribed to treat ADHD.

*How do ADHD drugs help people with ADHD?*
A lot of it has to do with a specific neurotransmitter in the brain that you’ve probably heard of before – dopamine. It’s key when it comes to your brain’s reward pathways. When you have a normal level of dopamine hanging out in the synapses of your brain, you’re able to maintain motivation when you’re doing something you’re not interested in. But for someone with ADHD, there’s less dopamine hanging out in the synapses. So, there’s less motivation to get things done. To get that dopamine level up, there’s more of a desire for short-term rewards. ADHD meds work by helping dopamine to stick around longer in the synapses. For people with ADHD, they can stay focused and avoid distractions, and that can be a total game-changer when it comes to getting stuff done at school or at work.

*So what happens when someone WITHOUT ADHD takes an ADHD drug like Adderall?*
Many studies in the lab don’t show that people without ADHD get any boost to their cognition when they take ADHD drugs, but real-life situations like exams and writing papers haven’t fully been tested. But many studies do show that these kinds of meds make you think you did better than you actually did. And there are worrisome side effects that can hurt you long term.

Healthy Eating & Eating Disorders - Anorexia, Bulimia, Binging | Huberman Lab Podcast #36

In this episode, I discuss what drives hunger and satiety, and the role our brain, stomach, fat and hormones play in regulating hunger and turning off the desire to eat more. I also discuss why protein is more easily absorbed early in the morning than later in the afternoon, and why intermittent fasters might want to shift their feeding windows to earlier in the days.

Next, I discuss disorders of eating. Bulimia Nervosa is where people eat a lot and Anorexia Nervosa is where they starve. I also discuss common myths surrounding Anorexia, such as how media images can increase the rate of anorexia and what the myth is about the “perfectionist anorexic”. I also discuss the symptoms and how the brain and chemical system are affected by this condition. I discuss how anorexics can become hyperaware about the fat content of food and develop reflexive patterns of fat-hyperawareness. Next, I will discuss the most effective treatment options. These can be family-based or targeted at the habitual nature low-fat/calorie foods. I discuss the latest clinical trials of MDMA, Psilocybin, and Ibogaine for Anorexia. I also discuss their potential and downsides.

I discuss the most recent research on Bulimia, brain stimulation, drug therapies and thyroid disruption in Bulimia. It is also why these treatments are similar to ADHD’s. The final part of my discussion is about “cheat days”, body dysmorphia, and other new eating disorders. Science and science-based tools are also discussed.

Understanding & Controlling Aggression | Huberman Lab Podcast #71

This episode I describe the neural mechanisms that activate and control aggressive states and behaviors and the role of hormones—estrogen and testosterone—in mediating violent and/or competitive aggression. I also describe tools that can be used to modulate the factors that have been shown to ‘prime’ an individual for aggression, including sunlight, estrogen sensitivity, competition within social settings, and overall stress levels, and the hormone cortisol. I discuss how substances such as caffeine and alcohol can impact impulsive behaviors and how nutrition and supplementation can be used to regulate mood and aggression.

How to Increase Motivation & Drive | Huberman Lab Podcast #12

I explain how dopamine, which is a chemical that we all produce in our brains, drives our desire to achieve and pursue our goals as well as our ability to move and enjoy pleasure. How we can use specific behaviors, reward programs and dopamine-prolactin levels to maintain motivation and pleasure for the long-term is what I discuss. I also talk about dopamine in ADHD, craving, addiction, and some amazing results regarding the specificity of drug effects that are purely based on belief.
