The first installment of What in the Q & A answers three questions from some of my twitter followers:
1. If caffeine gives me anxiety, will ADHD medications do the same? 2. How long does it normally take for medication to start working? 3. Is it okay to take days off from taking my meds?
I answer each question in depth and explain the science behind non-stimulants vs. stimulants and the mechanisms of action for vyvanse and adderall. I also give a few tips for those of you that may be just starting out on your ADHD treatment journey!
As always, everyone’s body is different, so the things I discuss may not apply to everyone – but I do talk about ways to help improve the efficacy of your medications, foods and drinks to avoid, and your different options for treatment once you get your ADHD diagnosis!
I want to remind everyone that I am not a doctor, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, counselor, or pharmacist. I’m simply a grad student and mama with ADHD-C, and I want to make information about ADHD fun and accessible! If you have not been diagnosed with ADHD, none of my videos are meant to be diagnostic.
“Acetylcholine Excess and Depression: A Connection that Suggests Safely Testable Hypotheses for Lessening Depression”
Depression deserves the same approach and treatment as non-brain-related chronic problems such as arthritis or a bad back.
A study found that a few weeks after receiving botox treatment for wrinkles, around 1/2 of patients found relief from depression. See Why did botox help?
Ideas:
#1 – Botox works by suppressing the release of acetylcholine. High levels of acetylcholine are now being looked at as a potential root cause of depression. e Acetylcholine is synthesized from choline, which is high in animal products, wheat germ, peanuts, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, etc. #2 – Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) respond to acetylcholine. #3 – nAChRs in the brain can become desensitized after repeated exposure to stimulants. #4 – Recent drug research on new antidepressants has been targeting nAChRs:
So here’s my basic hypothesis: Many of us eat a large amount of choline-rich food, so we can easily synthesize lots of acetylcholine. The constant exposure to plentiful acetylcholine in conjunction with other internal and external stimulators of nAChRs can result in desensitization of the nAChRs in our brains, dysfunction of which receptors is associated with depression. Botox allows a “reboot” of the system by cutting the acetylcholine supply for a while, allowing the nAChRs to become more sensitive again.
And here’s how to test it (beside getting botox treatments): Go on a low-choline diet (unless you’re pregnant or otherwise unable to) for 3-4 days, during which it would probably be good to also avoid anything that would mess with nAChRs (esp. nicotine, alcohol, and recreational drugs). See if you feel different a couple weeks later. Don’t do the low-choline diet for an extended period, though. We need choline, just maybe not quite as constantly as we get it. Also, try gardening. Soil often contains botox in very small amounts. Therapeutic horticulture has been repeatedly observed to help lessen clinical depression.
Caution: Take care not to have too much acid in your mouth on a regular basis in order to avoid inactivating an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. Study: “pH-dependent hydrolysis of acetylcholine: Consequences for non-neuronal acetylcholine” “Both esterases are pH-dependent with an optimum at pH above 7, whereas at pH values below 6 particularly the specific acetylcholinesterase is more or less inactive. Thus, acetylcholine is prevented from hydrolysis at such low pH values.”
The brain is right next to the oral/nasal cavity. “University of Iowa neuroscientist John Wemmie, M.D., Ph.D., is interested in the effect of acid in the brain. His studies suggest that increased acidity or low pH, in the brain is linked to panic disorders, anxiety, and depression. But his work also suggests that changes in acidity are important for normal brain activity too.”
Many common soft drinks and beverages have a pH under 4. (There is an error on one PPT slide where I wrote coffee has a pH under 4, but that is incorrect, for coffee has a pH range of 4.5-7; I was probably thinking of lemony iced tea instead.)
Suggestions on helping the mouth not be too acidic: Drink slightly alkaline (pH just over 7) water between meals if you know your mouth environment is unusually acidic. There are filter pitchers that will increase the pH of your drinking water while it sits in the refrigerator. After drinking soda pop or other highly acidic drinks, rinse your mouth with a mixture of water and a little baking soda. Spit it out afterward. Watch your use of fresh lemon juice and vinegar, which are highly acidic.

What is generalized anxiety disorder exactly (aka GAD disorder) and how does it affect a person? In this video we define generalized anxiety disorder and talk about some of the ways that it will affect a person to hopefully help anyone that's trying to determine if they have GAD if it is in fact the case.
So if you're sitting their asking yourself 'what is GAD?' or are unsure in any way then be sure to check it out!
A generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by:
- Excessive Worrying and Tension.
- Difficulty Sleeping.
- Tiredness.
- Headaches and migraines.
- Difficulty concentrating on things.
- Constant need to use the bathroom/toilet.
- Being easily irritated.
It's a sad but true fact that around 6.8 million adults in the US suffer from anxiety disorder. Women are twice as likely to be affected by it as men are.
It can be extremely debilitating but the good news is that it is treatable. The first step is learn to recognize the signs of generalized anxiety and then if one feels they do have GAD they should seek professional help.
“Acetylcholine Excess and Depression: A Connection that Suggests Safely Testable Hypotheses for Lessening Depression”
Depression should be treated in the same way as other chronic, non-brain-related problems like arthritis and a bad back.
A study showed that around half of patients who had received botox for wrinkles found relief from their depression within a few weeks. See What did botox do?
Ideas:
#1 – Botox suppresses the release of Acetylcholine. Acetylcholine high levels are being considered as a possible cause of depression. e Acetylcholine can be synthesized from choline which is high in animal products and wheat germ. #2 – Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors (nAChRs), respond to acetylcholine. #3 – Brain nAChRs can become desensitized to stimulants after repeated exposure. #4 – The latest drug research on antidepressants has focused on nAChRs
My basic hypothesis is that many people eat a lot of choline-rich foods, which allows them to easily synthesize acetylcholine. Constant exposure to acetylcholine and other stimulators of the nAChRs from both internal and external sources can cause brain desensitization. This is a condition that can lead to depression. Botox can be used to “reboot” the system by decreasing the supply of acetylcholine for a time, which allows the nAChRs become more sensitive.
Here’s how you can test it, other than getting botox treatments: You should go on a low-choline fast for three to four days (unless youre pregnant or otherwise unable) during which time it would be wise to avoid any substances that could affect nAChRs (esp. You should avoid nicotine, alcohol, or recreational drugs. Check back in a few weeks to see if your feelings have changed. However, don’t follow the low-choline diet too long. Choline is essential, but not as often as we need it. You can also try gardening. Botox is often found in soil, but only in small quantities. It has been proven that therapeutic horticulture can reduce clinical depression.
Caution: Avoid having too much acid in the mouth. This will cause an enzyme to be activated that breaks down Acetylcholine. Study: “pH-dependent hydrolysis of acetylcholine: Consequences for non-neuronal acetylcholine” “Both esterases have a pH dependence. Acetylcholine is less active at pH values below 6. At low pH .” , Acetylcholine cannot be hydrolyzed.
The brain is located right next to the oral/nasal cavities. John Wemmie (University of Iowa neuroscientist), Ph.D. is interested in acid’s effects on the brain. His research suggests that brain acidity, or low pH, is associated with panic disorders, anxiety and depression. His research also shows that acidity is important for normal brain activity .”
Many soft drinks and beverages are pH below 4. (I made a mistake on a slide in which I stated that coffee has a pH below 4. However, this is incorrect. Coffee has a pH range between 4.5-7. I was probably thinking about lemony iced coffee instead.
If your mouth is acidic, you can drink slightly alkaline water (PH just over 7), between meals. Filter pitchers can be used to increase the pH of your water as it cools in the fridge. After you have had soda pop or other acidic drinks, rinse out your mouth with water and some baking soda. After you have finished, spit it out. Be careful with fresh lemon juice or vinegar. They are very acidic.

Sykespico – Perspective, released on 30. Sep 2019 by Suntrip Records – SUNCD58
You’ll be just as excited as we are to release Sykespico’s debut album, “Perspective”, if you haven’t already followed up on our VA’s. Matan Levi and Nadav Elhadad are the producers behind this powerful, melodic project. They hail from south Israel and have released tracks and an EPs on Global Sect and Zion 604 as well as tracks on Suntrip.
They carefully selected and engineered “Perspective” to create a multifaceted intelligent and resourceful story that will stimulate your brain on the sofa as well as on the dancefloor.
The duo opens softly with “Great Light”, an airy track. It builds up with progressive influences and a huge break that must have lifted a lot of desert dust. The next story is “Psycho Therapy”, which has a more mellow, mechanical, synthetic feeling. “Trancologia”, and “6EQJE5” will propel you to the heart of the album. They smell like underground parties where you can let go and dance freely. You are captivated by massive leads that will only let you go with a funky twist. You will love melodies if you are a fan of “Concerta”, and its whacking rhythmic packets a whole lot…chirping, howing, twirling and rollercoasting! The “Visit Earth”, which we released on “The th Parallel”, was quite atmospheric. But, wait until you hear the “Live Mix”, Sykespico created for “Perspective”. This track is a neuron booster and contains lots of fx as well as melodic surprises. If you are still standing, “Dance Float”, a rhythmic battleship convoy hammering your brain with explosive melodies, gives you a final treatment. Sykespico cannot deny their israeli-gothrance influences with “Spacestation”; the duo showcases their amazing skills with this spin-top track that is constantly accelerating and decelerating, just to blow your mind! Many great albums end with a semi-slow track. This is the case with “Perlimor Star”, an electronic echo from birds of paradise in the vastness of the universe … . Matan and Nadav prove that it is possible to be poets as well as goatrance producers. Follow their journey through their imaginative “Perspective”!

Do you think you might have a bipolar disorder? Listen as your host, Eric Tivers, and his guest Malaika Tolford discuss her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and ADHD, how common it is to have both, and the difference between bipolar I and II, plus much more on this episode of ADHD reWired.
Malaika is a ceramic artist and owner of Place Value Pottery; she also teaches at a nonprofit craft organization. They diagnosed Malaika with bipolar two disorder in 2013 and added an ADHD diagnosis in January 2020, which provided some pieces of her mental health puzzle. She is a mom of two boys trying to navigate COVID while working from home and keeping out of the way of her husband's zoom meetings.
Listen as Malaika shares why she got in touch with Eric, the difference between bipolar I and II, and what led her to seek evaluation and diagnosis for bipolar disorder. Because of suicidal thoughts, Malaika sought medication for bipolar depression and was lucky enough that the first thing they tried worked for her.
Malaika discusses what happened in her life that led her to believe that she might also have ADHD, the struggle to figure out who she really was and how the pandemic made that journey even more difficult. Eric believes that if you can tolerate it, medication is one of the best treatments for ADHD.
Malaika speaks about her pottery business, how she has pivoted to online sales since the pandemic, and how pottery is relatable to both of her diagnoses. She describes her pottery and shares that she puts maps on all of her pieces because she likes geography, so please check out her work at Place Value Pottery if that is your thing.

Galaxy Brain - Episode 1 - Social Anxiety (AnxietyCanada.com)
Everyone struggles with social anxiety sometimes, even aliens! Drexal is no exception, which is why he reaches out to his friendly computer to talk about his fears.
Watch episode 2 of Galaxy Brain right here:
/>
-----------
Drexal is an alien living on a remote moon base, which means he has to connect with his friends and peers online—just like so many of us Earthlings are doing now!
It can be tough to connect to other people, especially when you feel anxious in social situations. Luckily, Drexal has a pretty smart computer sidekick who explains that everyone feels social anxiety sometimes and usually things turn out just fine.
You are not alone in your struggle, remember that it’s normal to feel anxiety, especially as the world around us changes. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from someone you trust or find a friend to talk to about your feelings, like Drexal the alien does.
Share Drexal’s video series with other people you know and see if any of them feel the same way. It’s a fun way to share your feelings and maybe help your friends out as well! It’s important to talk about how you feel.
► Have you felt scared or anxious about talking to friends and classmates in person or online?
► Do you worry that you might say something embarrassing?
► Can you think of anyone else who may feel the same way you do?
► Who is someone you trust that you could talk about your feelings with?
-------
Stay tuned for more of Galaxy Brain, featuring Drexal the alien! Watch as he talks about his anxiety with his computer sidekick and they come up with ideas to help aliens (and humans) express their feelings.
Check out Time Travelling Pizza, our animated series about Chris Crust the pizza slice who travels through time to help himself with his anxiety in hilarious adventures. />
-------
Galaxy Brain is a pre-teen and teen animated series focusing on topics such as social anxiety, health anxiety, contamination OCD and more. With humour and heart, Galaxy Brain normalizes anxiety in an entertaining way and encourages seeking help from a trusted parent, teacher or friend.
As a parent, educator or health care provider, it can be difficult to talk to pre-teens and teens about mental health, especially during the pandemic. Anxiety Canada has created the Galaxy Brain, Caretoons animated series to open the door to communication, allowing youth the understand that they aren’t alone in their feelings and that talking about their fears can be very helpful.
Many youth don’t realize that what they are feeling is anxiety, as we all face new situations daily during the pandemic and beyond. Being able to name their anxieties, recognize symptoms of anxiety, and understand the impact it has on their lives, are important steps that you can help them with.
Keep the conversation going! Let kids know that it’s ok to talk about their feelings and give them a safe space to express themselves. It can help if you also discuss your own anxieties so that they know they are not alone.
If you’re looking for answers about helping children and teens with anxiety, as well as other mental health resources, then take a look at Anxiety Canada’s helpful links below. There are useful articles for teens, parents, educators or health care providers.

Caretoons, the animated series, was created with the support of British Columbia’s Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions by Point Blank Creative and Anxiety Canada. Voiced by acclaimed comedian and author, Charlie Demers.
If you have not been diagnosed with ADHD, none of my videos are meant to be diagnostic.

http://adhdinadults.com/ Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can inhibit people from functioning at their highest potential and is often the cause or a contributing factor to problems in a patient's professional and personal life. Adult ADHD expert, Lenard Adler, joins Robert Tudisco to illustrate the benefits patients receive when diagnosed and treated for ADHD.
Tudisco sought help for ADHD shortly after his child was tested and diagnosed. Often after identifying ADHD symptoms in children, parents gain insight on their own behaviors. For that reason, Adler recommends that healthcare professions screen adults for ADHD if their child has been diagnosed. Such was the case for Tudisco, who noted that at work he was having problems with time management, paying attention to multiple things at once and completing administrative tasks.
Personal relationships can also suffer due to adult ADHD. Concerned about being a better father and husband, Tudisco sought help and became educated with information on ADHD and stories about other patients. He was prescribed a non-stimulant medication that has helped him cope with his ADHD and has since been able to overcome some of the obstacles that he was unable to manage prior to his diagnosis.
Adler is the Director of the Adult ADHD Program at NYU School of Medicine. Robert Tudisco, Esq. is the Executive Director of ADHD Coaching, Adult ADHD. For more information on Adult ADHD please visit the link above. Our Website with Free Resources

There are many strengths that go along with our ADHD symptoms. Which strengths you have and express will depend on a lot of factors, and it's not the same for everybody, but here are my 10 favorite things about having ADHD that have been true for me, I've found in my research and I see in many other ADHDers too.
Also -- to be clear I am NOT saying ADHD is not a challenge or a legitimate disorder. I am not saying we shouldn't get treatment. I am on Vyvanse myself and a big believer in multimodal treatment so that we can overcome those challenges and enjoy our strengths.
