Most people do not recognize their anxiety for what it is, and instead think there is something "wrong" with them. Some people are preoccupied with the symptoms of anxiety (e.g. stomach aches, increased heart rate, shortness of breath, etc.). Others think they are weird, weak, or even going crazy! Unfortunately, these thoughts only make people feel even more anxious and self-conscious. Click below to read more...

In this video, we're going to talk about one way that depression and anxiety are linked - avoidance - and the antidote to avoidance - willingness.
Anxiety and depression are closely linked. Many people experience both simultaneously. This isn’t an accident. This is not a coincidence. Rather, how we react to stress and other painful emotions can determine whether or not our anxiety grows.
Avoidance can lead to anxiety and depression. However, a way to overcome this is to be willing to let your emotions flow without trying to control them.
Why anxiety and depression are closely linked
Depression and anxiety are a common comorbidity

About Me:
I'm Emma McAdam. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and have worked in many settings of growth and change since 2004.. My experience includes involvement in juvenile corrections, wilderness therapy programs and adventure therapy programs. I also have experience with eating disorders treatment centers, residential treatment centers, and outpatient therapy clinics.
My therapy uses a combination Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Systems Theory. Positive psychology is also used. I also use a bio-psychosocial approach to treat mental illness and other problems we all face. My videos often incorporate ideas from multiple sources. Many of these ideas are based on Acceptance and Commitment therapy, particularly the work of Jason Luoma and Steven Hayes. The section on stress and the mind/body connection is based on the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal Theory), Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing), Francine Shapiro and Bessel Van der Kolk. The work of the Arbinger Institute is a major source of my understanding of how we can choose the direction of our lives.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is deeper than that. It orients my personal worldview, sense of security, peace and hope, as well as my love and respect e

This video describes the controversy surrounding the so-called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) epidemic. ADHD is characterized by symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity including impulsivity, fidgeting, irritability, forgetfulness, anxiety, mood swings, limited attention span, trouble focusing, excitability, and boredom. Evidence suggests that a good portion of the diagnoses of ADHD are incorrect. In some cases, normal childhood behavior has been pathologized and the number of ADHD cases has risen to about 10 – 15% of school-aged children. More widespread prescribing of stimulants has led to increased number of individuals with stimulant use disorder. More thorough assessments are needed to limit the diagnosing of ADHD to only those who have the disorder.
Got questions? We have the answers! (This video was made possible by Patrick LaCount, our research consultant, who is currently interning at Duke’s ADHD clinic.

What is ADHD Therapy? What to look for and what to expect?
Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder characterized by sentiments of fear and anxiety in social situations, causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some aspects of daily life.[2]: 15 These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others. Individuals with social anxiety disorder fear negative evaluations from other people.
Physical symptoms often include excessive blushing, excess sweating, trembling, palpitations, and nausea. Stammering may be present, along with rapid speech. Panic attacks can also occur under intense fear and discomfort. Some sufferers may use alcohol or other drugs to reduce fears and inhibitions at social events. It is common for sufferers of social phobia to self-medicate in this fashion, especially if they are undiagnosed, untreated, or both; this can lead to alcohol use disorder, eating disorders or other kinds of substance use disorders. SAD is sometimes referred to as an illness of lost opportunities where "individuals make major life choices to accommodate their illness".[3][4] According to ICD-10 guidelines, the main diagnostic criteria of social phobia are fear of being the focus of attention, or fear of behaving in a way that will be embarrassing or humiliating, avoidance and anxiety symptoms.[5] Standardized rating scales can be used to screen for social anxiety disorder and measure the severity of anxiety.
The first line of treatment for social anxiety disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).[6] Medications such as SSRIs are effective for social phobia, especially paroxetine.[7] CBT is effective in treating this disorder, whether delivered individually or in a group setting.[8] The cognitive and behavioral components seek to change thought patterns and physical reactions to anxiety-inducing situations. The attention given to social anxiety disorder has significantly increased since 1999 with the approval and marketing of drugs for its treatment. Prescribed medications include several classes of antidepressants: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).[9] Other commonly used medications include beta blockers and benzodiazepines.
