Eating Disorders: The Silent Killer Among Us

Although the term “eating” is in the name, eating disorders are about more than food. They’re complex mental health conditions that often require the intervention of medical and psychological experts to alter their course.

These disorders are described in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition.

327 | Eating Well With ADHD - Luz Jaramillo

featured image

Do you celebrate all of life’s moments, good or bad, with food? Eric and Luz Jaramillo discuss how to break the eating disorder and live a healthy life.

Luz, the brain body coach’s owner, holds a master’s degree in social work, is a certified coach in life, certified in Neuro-Linguistic programming and certified in brain health coaching. Luz is a motivational speaker and best-selling author. She also has ADHD, dyslexia and learning difficulties. After suffering from an eating disorder for most of her life, she was able to overcome it and lost over 50lbs. This helped her improve her focus and her health.

Luz and Eric talk about how to change your thoughts and patterns and the importance eating healthy foods. Eric shares with us that ADHD brain doesn’t process carbs well so it is best to limit carbs and replace them with protein.

Consistency is key! Luz says that food is not your friend, but fuel. You should eat to live, not live to eat. Eric and Luz share ways to get healthy snacks ready and portioned so that you can grab a bag quickly and easily. It’s okay to slip and get up again tomorrow.

Luz knows a lot about ADHD and eating disorders because she has been there. This episode is for you if any of these resonate with you. Hear what she has to share. It could be the difference between life or death.

You’ll learn:

[01: 56] Welcome to the show, Luz! [03: 24] Luz shares when she learned she had ADHD. [03: 58] How did your eating disorder lead you to learn you had ADHD? [05: 12] Luz speaks about what form her eating disorder took. [07: 28] When did you decide you needed help with this disorder? [10: 10] Luz used neuro linguistic programming to switch her emotional thoughts from food to thoughts of pleasure. [12: 23] When you change your thought patterns, your internal critic screams louder and calls you a fraud. This is normal and takes time. [14: 35] Luz was ready to have weight loss surgery before her sister got her to change her mind. [16: 29] Looking back, how do you feel about how desperate you were? [21: 11] Eric speaks about some regular issues around food and how he deals with the cravings. [23: 06] Set up your environment to be conducive to what you need. [23: 57] Luz shares how important it is to have nutritious food for at least three meals a day. [26: 01] Eric shares that the ADHD brain does not do a good job of breaking down carbs. [28: 08] Consistency is the key! [31: 04] Luz suggests to people that food is not your friend, food is fuel. [32: 03] How do you suggest that people stop when they know they are in the middle of a binge? [34: 04] Replace the food with something else. [35: 20] Eric shares that many people he knows are doing a sugar detox. [37: 00] How sensitive to sugar are you? Are you a test subject? [38: 03] Luz says you should tell yourself it’s just for today, focus on one day at a time. [41: 10] Meditation and mindfulness are the keys to success. [46: Luz gives some tips to make healthy food easy to grab for snacks. [49: 55] Do you know of any resources or services that can help people eat healthy foods? [52: 01] You have to have the correct mindset, it might be harder if you have ADHD, but it is still doable. [52: You will fall, but that’s okay. [55: 00] Willpower starts strong in the morning, and it’s a slippery slope later in the day if you don’t recharge your system with the right food. [57: 17] Thank you so much for being on the show! Binge Eating Disorder: Vyvanse

featured image

“Experts” claim this relatively new “disease” affects up to 5% of adults and almost 2% of children or almost 3 million Americans. It’s defined as eating too much, too fast and suffering embarrassment afterward. Shire Pharmaceuticals, the company behind popularizing the concept of B.E.D., seeks to stimulate sales of its drug Vyvanse as the sole F.D.A. authorized drug to treat this condition. Unfortunately this pro-drug morphs into amphetamine with all of its associated toxicities. Whether Vyvanse which is also promoted for ADHD represents an advance remains debatable.

https://brain-therapy.com/binge-eating-disorder-vyvanse/

How Does rTMS Work?
rTMS is a medical grade magnet that is used to balance the speed of abnormal operating nerves in the brain. The magnet sends a signal that can be varied to stimulate or slow down the nerves in the specific regions. For example:

rTMS FOR DEPRESSION: The normal pattern that scientists expect brains to work at is 15 – 20 pulses per second (pps) on the left front portion of the brain, also called the frontal lobe. Patients whose brains run below 15pps have symptoms that typically include depression.

rTMS FOR ANXIETY: Normally, the left side of the brain works at a higher frequency than the right side. When this pattern reverses, and the right brain works at a higher frequency, the individual often exhibits symptoms that doctors call anxiety. This right brain dominance may be due to the right brain working too fast, or the left brain not working fast enough, or both.

rTMS FOR OTHER CONDITIONS: We can also use rTMS to improve abnormal frequencies in the brain; either stimulating or quieting it, to treat a wide variety of conditions.

Healthy Eating & Eating Disorders - Anorexia, Bulimia, Binging | Huberman Lab Podcast #36

featured image

In this episode, I discuss what drives hunger and satiety, and the role our brain, stomach, fat and hormones play in regulating hunger and turning off the desire to eat more. I also address how protein is assimilated better early in the day than it is later in the day, and why those using intermittent fasting might want to shift their feeding window to earlier in the day.

Then I delve into the topic of disorders of eating: Anorexia Nervosa, where people starve themselves and Bulimia Nervosa where people binge and purge their food. I discuss some common myths about Anorexia such as the role of media images increasing the rates of anorexia and the myth of the “perfectionist” anorexic. I also review the symptoms, and the brain and chemical systems disrupted in this condition. I explain how anorexics become hyperaware of the fat content of foods and develop reflexive habits of fat-hyperawareness. Then I discuss the most effective treatments ranging from family-based models to those that target the habitual nature of low-fat/calorie food choices. I also discuss new more experimental clinical trials on MDMA, Psilocybin and Ibogaine for Anorexia, and both their promise and risks.

I review the latest work on binge eating disorder and brain stimulation, drug treatments and thyroid disruption in Bulimia and why the treatments for Bulimia are so similar to those for ADHD. Finally, I discuss “cheat days,” body dysmorphia and the growing list of novel forms of eating disorders start to finish. As always, science and science-based tools are discussed.

I also discuss why protein is more easily absorbed early in the morning than later in the afternoon, and why intermittent fasters might want to shift their feeding windows to earlier in the days.

Next, I discuss disorders of eating. Bulimia Nervosa is where people eat a lot and Anorexia Nervosa is where they starve. I also discuss common myths surrounding Anorexia, such as how media images can increase the rate of anorexia and what the myth is about the “perfectionist anorexic”. I also discuss the symptoms and how the brain and chemical system are affected by this condition. I discuss how anorexics can become hyperaware about the fat content of food and develop reflexive patterns of fat-hyperawareness. Next, I will discuss the most effective treatment options. These can be family-based or targeted at the habitual nature low-fat/calorie foods. I discuss the latest clinical trials of MDMA, Psilocybin, and Ibogaine for Anorexia. I also discuss their potential and downsides.

I discuss the most recent research on Bulimia, brain stimulation, drug therapies and thyroid disruption in Bulimia. It is also why these treatments are similar to ADHD’s. The final part of my discussion is about “cheat days”, body dysmorphia, and other new eating disorders. Science and science-based tools are also discussed.
