Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder characterized by sentiments of fear and anxiety in social situations, causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some aspects of daily life.[2]:15 These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others. Individuals with social anxiety disorder fear negative evaluations from other people.

Physical symptoms often include excessive blushing, excess sweating, trembling, palpitations, and nausea. Stammering may be present, along with rapid speech. Panic attacks can also occur under intense fear and discomfort. Some sufferers may use alcohol or other drugs to reduce fears and inhibitions at social events. It is common for sufferers of social phobia to self-medicate in this fashion, especially if they are undiagnosed, untreated, or both; this can lead to alcohol use disorder, eating disorders or other kinds of substance use disorders. SAD is sometimes referred to as an illness of lost opportunities where "individuals make major life choices to accommodate their illness".[3][4] According to ICD-10 guidelines, the main diagnostic criteria of social phobia are fear of being the focus of attention, or fear of behaving in a way that will be embarrassing or humiliating, avoidance and anxiety symptoms.[5] Standardized rating scales can be used to screen for social anxiety disorder and measure the severity of anxiety.

The first line of treatment for social anxiety disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).[6] Medications such as SSRIs are effective for social phobia, especially paroxetine.[7] CBT is effective in treating this disorder, whether delivered individually or in a group setting.[8] The cognitive and behavioral components seek to change thought patterns and physical reactions to anxiety-inducing situations. The attention given to social anxiety disorder has significantly increased since 1999 with the approval and marketing of drugs for its treatment. Prescribed medications include several classes of antidepressants: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).[9] Other commonly used medications include beta blockers and benzodiazepines.

What is the difference between clinical depression and sadness? - Dr. Surekha Tiwari

Depression is caused by three chemicals found in the brain. Depression can be caused by a combination of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Any one of these transmitters is less common in the brain. Depression is a feeling that you feel sad. Depression is a state of mind that the mind cannot see any light. Dopamine is the first to be mentioned. Dopamine means that if you do this, you will receive a reward. It is a good feeling that rewards you for doing something. This is when the brain can get a short-term pleasure from something. How long can you enjoy a process if you go home today and are rejoicing about it? If you fail in your class for many years, the person will not forget that day. Norepinephrine helps me get rid of anxiety, sadness, or when I don’t want to do anything. This is when depression sufferers stop eating, taking a bath and leaving their home. This makes it difficult to do any type of activity. The pleasures of life are governed by serotonin. The sexual aspect, the need for food, sleep, and the essential functions of maintaining your body’s health. The evidence for each element was becoming more and more contradictory as the research progressed. One study found that depression is caused by a lack of any one of these elements. The second research says you don’t have enough hormones but your mood is depressing. It is difficult to determine the amount of hormones in your body. There is no way to know. We only get the patient if the patient says they are not happy. Please examine the reasons you’re not feeling happy. If you go to the doctor and tell them you have clinical depression, your brain is responsible for my mood. This trigger comes from something dark, sad, rejection, or failure. People ride this wave of clinical depression and feel helpless. But there are medications available. Dr. Edward Batch covers a group of homeopathy remedies known as the batch flower remedy. This is a collection of 38 remedies that are made from plants. They are effective in treating depression. Talk to a homeopath. This will help. There are many medications that are very effective and non-addictive.

The past few years have been tumultuous, worrying, and depressing. Events, both global, career-wise, and personal, have challenged my normally upbeat mood. While I’ve felt depressed at points, I know it’s different from a diagnosis of Clinical Depression.

Been there. Done that. More than once. Not fun.

Am I depressed?
Several patrons have asked about the difference between natural sadness and full-blown depression, so what is the difference?

Depression is classified as a mood disorder as in clinically depressed, meaning you’re seeing a doctor at a clinic and you’ve received a reliable diagnosis of depression. It’s to the point where you are suffering, but here’s the thing you may not realize that you are suffering.

Depression can come on so slowly so gradually you don’t even notice what’s happening. Now to be clear I am not a doctor although I did play a nurse in a Frantics comedy skit, my bedside manner was yeah so so.

So at points in my life I have been down, sad, feeling kind of depressed, for any number of reasons, good reasons. Usually.

I’ve also been clinically depressed a few times so I have some first-hand experience or first head experience.

Now to make sure that I’m not talking through my hat I avoid wearing hats and I consulted a list of depression symptoms from sources that I trust.

Symptoms of Depression
Symptoms of depression can include:

Trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
Fatigue
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness
Pessimism and hopelessness
Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or sleeping too much
Crankiness
Restlessness
Loss of interest in things once pleasurable, including sex
Overeating, or appetite loss
Aches, pains, headaches, or cramps that won’t go away
Digestive problems that don’t get better, even with treatment
Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
Suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts
*Source WebMD

The lists of depression symptoms are fairly consistent that’s what I found, they don’t vary much from site to site. That said I found these lists flat, even kind of abstract, when you’re depressed you’re not thinking or feeling things in a clear balanced way so you could read any one of these symptoms and go “um yeah, I don’t know, um sort of, I hadn’t noticed” they can seem ungrounded, so let’s ground the symptoms in a real life experience one that we can all share as human beings, The Queen’s Gambit.

Now in 2020 this amazing Netflix series about an orphan who becomes a chess prodigy garnered 60 million views in one month, that’s like half the population of the world… okay it’s one percent less than… it’s still it’s impressive.

If you haven’t seen it I’ll avoid spoilers but the sequence on the planet mars was amazing and who knew Khloe Kardashian could act, huh. If you missed it feel free to substitute a new program you love because you might be watching this later, so maybe it’ll be Sharknado 5 the dust devil’s revenge or Napoleon Dynamite 2, I want a sequel, sorry.

Also since depression only ever affects a percentage of the population and even for most of us who have experienced it the depression tends to come in bouts. Most of my life I’ve been happy and hopeful I’ll be you know a little anxious and scattered and worried all the time but it’s not there forever.

So here are 10 signs that you’re not depressed because most of us aren’t depressed most of the time.

Lyrics ► Anxiety

Verse 1
All those voices
Can’t ignore them (I can’t ignore em) I have no choice left
I’m falling again (ah)

Pre-Chorus
Yeah I feel them crawling under my skin I hear them calling how it begins
They see me strong but I’m giving in I’m giving in

Chorus
My mind
Is leaving me behind
Closed eyes
Hoping they won’t find
Every very piece of me
That’s ever been inside of me I’m trying all my best to get rid Of my anxiety
(Uh) I’ve tried
Keeping it inside
(Uh) I lied
’Bout where the voices hide Every very piece of me
That’s ever been inside of me I’m trying all my best to get rid Of my anxiety
(Uh I’ve tried) Of my Anxiety Aye

Verse 2
I’ve got the feeling ’Though I can’t see ’em (They come in closer)
I just can’t reach ’em I’m falling again (Ah)

Pre-Chorus
Yeah I feel them crawling under my skin I hear them calling how it begins
They see me strong but I’m giving in I’m giving in

Chorus
(Uh) I’ve tried
Keeping it inside
(Uh) I lied
’Bout where the voices hide Every very piece of me
That’s ever been inside of me I’m trying all my best to get rid Of my anxiety
(Uh I’ve tried) Of my anxiety

Bridge
Feels like I’m under my skin
But it’s not giving in
I just can not reach the ground
When I think I am insane
It is starting a game
Like my mind’s their damn playground (Oh)
Feels like like I’m under my skin But it’s not giving in
I just can not reach the ground When I think I am insane
It is starting again
Like my mind’s their damn playground (Oh)

Chorus
Uh I’ve tried
Keeping it inside
Uh I lied
’Bout where the voices hide Every very piece of me
That’s ever been inside of me I’m trying all my best to get rid (Uh I’ve tried) Of my anxiety
Feels like I’m under my skin
But it’s not giving in
I just can not reach the ground
When I think I am insane
It is starting a game
Like my mind’s their damn playground Oh

Eating as a way to deal with grief and depression feels comforting in the moment. It's not the best thing for ADHD brains or the best long-term for our overall health. Hi was my diet, and I ate my way through my grief. The consequences were severe: increased cholesterol, weight gain, and not being able to recognize myself in photos. This is reverse body dysmorphia. In other words, it's denial. Or, in other words: denial. #PetiteVanillaScones #scones #chocolatetrufflecake #tuxedoCake #ralphs #bauschandlomb

Social Anxiety - Celebrities with Social Anxiety Disorder

A video of a few celebrities who have suffered with Social Anxiety Disorder and what they have said about their experience with it.

Fitness coach, life coach, father of one Ralph Quillen is familiar with ADHD.

"I think most parents are aware of the problem. I've coached for twelve years and I've seen a progression in it over the years," says Quillen.

There is confusion and misconceptions about what it is and how you treat it.

"The reality is, the research shows it's not so much the motoric behavior but rather the attention deficits that are the hallmark of this disorder," says Dr. Elena Reyes, clinical psychologist with Lee Memorial Health System.

Meaning kids aren't able to plan and execute everyday tasks. It's now estimated 1 in 10 children in the US - 1 in 5 teenage boys - are diagnosed with ADHD and 3.5 million youngsters are taking an ADHD drug. Something doctors say can be a game-changer.

"Medication is often needed to allow for the child to be able to focus. We've got good research that shows children who are appropriately diagnosed and appropriately treated with medication can do very well," says Dr. Reyes.

Medication may be the most talked about ADHD treatment, but not the only one. Behavior management, actually working on impulse control can be successful, provided parents buy in.

"We train the student about how to organize themselves, how to stop how to think, how to be able to manage their work and their behavior. That usually is associated with parent management also. If a child can't structure themselves how can you as a parent structure them so they can be successful," says Dr. Reyes.

Ralph sees the structure, required in sports, makes an impact.

"I see more kids that are medicated through high school these days then when I first started coaching. As an athlete, sports is more of an outlet - so it actually helps them," says Quillen.

The end game is the same: helping kids find their focus

10 Signs You DON'T Have Depression

featured image

The past few years have been tumultuous, worrying, and depressing. My normally positive mood has been affected by events both personal and professional. Although I have felt down at times, I know that it is not a sign of Clinical Depression.

Have been there. This has been done. You’ve done it more than once. It’s not fun.

You may wonder what the signs are for full-blown depression if you have had a difficult few years. These 10 signs that it’s not depression are here to keep you positive. Vote for Pedro )

Am I depressed?
Many patrons have inquired about the differences between natural sadness (or full-blown depression) and their symptoms.

Depression is classified as a mood disorder, which means that you have been diagnosed with depression by a doctor. You may be suffering to the point that you feel helpless.

Depression can develop slowly enough that you don’t notice it. Although I was not a doctor, I did portray a nurse in a Frantics comedy skit. My bedside manner was okay.

At times in my life, I’ve felt sad or depressed. There are many reasons. Usually.

I have also been diagnosed with clinical depression a few times, so I have first-hand or first-hand knowledge.

To make sure I am not talking through my head, I have stopped wearing hats. I also consulted a list that contains depression symptoms that I trusted.

Symptoms of Depression
These are all signs of depression.
Trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
Fatigue
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness Pessimism
and hopelessnessInsomnia, wakefulness in the morning, or excessive sleep Crankiness
Restlessness
The loss of interest in once pleasurable things, such as sex
.Overeating, or appetite loss

Cramps, pains, headaches or aches that don’t go awayEven with treatment
, digestive problems don’t improve.Persistent sadness, anxiety, or “empty” feelings Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts
*Source WebMD

The depression symptoms lists are pretty consistent, that’s what I found. They don’t differ much from one site to the next. These lists are flat and abstract to me. When you are depressed, you don’t think or feel things in a balanced way. You could easily read any of these symptoms and say “um yeah, I don’t know, um kind of,” but they can also seem unfounded. Let’s make the Queen’s Gambit a real-life experience that all of us can share.

2020 This Netflix series about an orphan who turns into a chess prodigy has received 60 millions views in one month. That’s half of the world’s population… but it’s still impressive.

It was incredible. I won’t spoil it, but the scene on Mars was spectacular. Who knew Khloe Kardashian could act? You can substitute another program if you miss it. It’s possible you’ll be watching it later so it might be Sharknado 5: The dust devil’s revenge, or Napoleon Dynamite 2. Sorry.

Depression is a condition that affects only a small percentage of people. It can also happen in short periods. While I have been happy most of my life, I was also hopeful. However, I am now a bit anxious, scattered and worried but not for ever.

These 10 signs will tell you that you aren’t depressed, since most people aren’t depressed all the time.
