This video can help you identify signs and symptoms that indicate anxiety in children if you are concerned about them having anxiety.
There are many types of childhood anxiety, including OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (also called OCD), separation anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Children with generalized anxiety may experience excessive worry about things that don't matter and a tendency toward perfection.
Children with OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, will often be overwhelmed by a series of tasks and rituals. They will find it difficult to function until they are done. This is especially common for children 10 and older.
Children with social anxiety disorder are often able to not make friends and answer questions in class. These children are often seen as introverted and shy.
Separation anxiety can manifest in children as excessive crying, anger, and a feeling that they are homesick when they are far from their parents. It is also accompanied by an uncontrollable fear.
Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a condition that occurs when children have suffered traumatic events like the death of a parent. It can cause symptoms such as irritability and a refusal to visit certain places or talk to certain people.
Children suffering from phobias may experience tantrums, headaches, and crying. As an irrational fear, these children will avoid certain situations.
Children with selective mutism will find it difficult to find their voices when they are in stressful situations.
Children suffering from panic disorder may experience increased heart rate, nausea, dizziness and fear. Panic disorders are when a child experiences more than two panic attacks at once.
