Anxiety is one of most prevalent mental health disorders, with 1 out of 14 people around the world being likely affected. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. Olivia will stress that by allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful, and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders.

A brief series of personal anecdotes describing my life with ADHD, and how the power of attitude and perception dictate our development in life.
I’m a 16 year-old boy who enjoys political debates when I’m not incessantly talking to myself (I’m what my mother calls an “external processor”). I am a junior attending Jesuit High School in Beaverton, Oregon despite living in Brush Prairie, Washington (it’s roughly a marathon in length, if I weren’t her son I’d be the bane of my mother’s existence). I have an older sister named Courtney, who is currently working towards her PhD (I’m absolutely thrilled at the prospect of living up to that expectation). When I’m not dozing off in Chemistry class or distracting my friends, I enjoy golfing at my local course, Royal Oaks.

There are oodles of research on ADHD in young people. However, there is a dearth of research on the ways ADHD affects seasoned adults and the impact this medically-defined disorder has on their lives. Dr. Kimbery Quinn helps us better understand the ways that ADHD affects adults, the issues they might face in relationships and life, and ways to reframe and help support those we know with this condition. As a professor at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, Dr. Kimberly Quinn teaches cognitive and positive psychology. She’s also a workshop facilitator, who frequently speaks on a variety of topics related to positive psychology, well-being, trauma-informed education, and mindfulness training for schools (students and/or faculty), human services agencies, and business organizations. Her recent research is on the influence of social media on the well-being of college students.
Prior to teaching, Kimberly was a child and family therapist, specializing in working with those with ADHD. She said, “ADHD is a misnomer: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder should be ASHD (Attention Surplus High-energy Difference). ADHD is also a gift, due to one’s enhanced ability for divergent thinking – creativity and innovation.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. In current society, people with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) tend to struggle if not suffer. Despite this, rather than a disorder, ADHD should be thought of as a particular neuro-cognitive profile; that is, a characteristic brain format that results in a different way of literally thinking. With so many people diagnosed with ADHD – and so many more undiagnosed — we must ask, where does ADHD come from and is it truly a problem in and of itself?
Salif shares a current hypothesis about ADHD’s root and an alternative perspective – including several benefits of the condition – regarding how we engage with it in our schools, homes and selves.

1.2% of the adult population in Singapore suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) at some time in their lifetime. The essential feature of GAD is a general feeling of excessive anxiety and worry that is difficult to control. These feelings are not related to any specific event or object but may be about a number of events and activities. They are often accompanied by other symptoms like restlessness, fatigue, irritability, or disturbed sleep. GAD can be chronic and recurrent in nature, impair family life, and reduces social adjustment and functioning. Typically, GAD develops over a period of time and may not be noticed until it is significant enough to cause problems with functioning. Learn more about GAD in this video.

ADHD in adulthood is often misdiagnosed. Here are the signs you need to know - straight from a leading psychologist.
In this interview, Dr. Judy answers...
- How common is ADHD in adulthood?
- What is the difference between adult ADHD and ADD?
- What are some common misconceptions when it comes to adults who either believe they have ADHD or have received the diagnosis of ADHD?
- What percent of children recover from ADHD and what percent of people have it in adulthood?
- A lot of adults think they have ADHD. When does it go from being "a lack of attention" to full-blown adult ADHD?
Dr. Judy and Kyle's discussion provides eye-opening insight to the adult ADHD diagnosis and treatment.
ABOUT THE SERIES:
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adulthood can hold you or someone you love back in all areas of life.
From causing relationship issues to interfering with work productivity, and even to co-occurring with other mental health issues like substance abuse, anxiety, and depression, adult ADHD is pervasive—especially when it goes undiagnosed.
Millions of adults are living with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Without education or treatment, ADHD can lead to chronic fatigue, anxiety, disorganization, and issues at work and at home. This series provides the education and solutions needed to better manage adult ADHD and ultimately live a more productive, happier life.
