In this final part of the webinar, Dr. Kenny discusses the recent New York Times editorial called: Ritalin Gone Wrong. In it, ADHD medication treatment was challenged. This video explains how to understand the criticisms, and offers answers and research to help you to understand why ADHD medication is used, how to use it safely, and answers to the issues brought up in the article
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common condition. Genes may play a role. Stress may also contribute to the development of GAD.
Anyone can develop this disorder, even kids. Most people with the disorder report that they have been anxious for as long as they can remember. GAD occurs somewhat more often in women than in men.

Kleptomania is an impulse control disorder that requires 5 criteria according to the Diagnostics and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition.
1. Recurrent failure to resist impulses to steal objects that are not needed for personal use or for their monetary value. 2. Increasing sense of tension immediately before committing the theft. 3. Pleasure, gratification, or relief at the time of committing the theft. 4. The stealing is not committed to express anger or vengeance and is not in response to a delusion or a hallucination. 5. stealing is not better explained by conduct disorder, a manic episode, or antisocial personality disorder.
Even though kleptomania has “mania” in the name, it’s not related to bipolar disorder at all. It’s not something people do because they are in a manic state. There are other disorders that have mania in the name like Pyromania with is compulsive fire setting and Trichotillomania which is compulsive hair pulling
Because the person often takes small objects as opposed to filling up a backpack with stuff, they can avoid detection and the behavior can go unnoticed for a long time. Typically, they won’t admit it to anyone, even people close to them.
Another thing people will do is return items or give them away. There’s usually a lot of remorse or self-loathing associated with taking the items afterwards and that leads people to want to get rid of them. They may anonymously return them or give them to someone who can use the items.
This disorder isn’t studied much because it’s not that common in the general population and people don’t often seek help unless they’re faced with negative consequences like a spouse threatening to leave or facing legal troubles.
This disorder usually starts in the teenage years to early adulthood. Because it’s not studied much, we don’t have treatment protocols for it. Medication may help somewhat, usually the mood stabilizer that we use to treat other impulse control problems. Some specialized cognitive behavior therapy may also be helpful. If the person develops other problems like depression or anxiety, the treatment they get for the other problem may also help their kleptomania.
It is the kind of condition that can come and go over time. People can have several episodes, then have long periods of remission where they aren’t very active.

Learn how to get better at feeling. That means you increase your capacity to feel emotions, to experience both joyful and painful emotions without needing to escape, avoid, or act on them. This is a skill that has been transformational for me and many of my clients, and it’s called willingness.
Willingness means the ability to sit with and experience what you are currently experiencing. It’s the ability to be where you’re at, to feel what you feel, and to expand your heart to be able to feel your emotions, whether they are comfortable or painful.
So first we’re going to talk a little about willingness, and then we're going to do a little exercise adapted from “Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life” by Steven Hayes 9
I've moved my courses off of Udemy-Check them out here: m
Research has demonstrated that people who can’t make room for their uncomfortable feelings have a very hard time with self-control. Because they feel the need to escape, control, or suppress painful emotions, they resort to anger, blame, drug use, or other avoidance techniques that, in the long run, end up making them unhappy, disconnected from life, and unfulfilled.
On the other hand, practicing willingness can help you strengthen your emotional muscles and get more skilled at feeling, which makes heavy or painful emotions feel lighter. Willingness is an approach to emotion management that’s sustainable because over time things get better and better instead of harder and harder.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love e

http://adhdinadults.com Dr. Lenard Adler describes the story of a male in his 40's that was diagnosed and treated for Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) shortly after his child was tested and diagnosed. Parents often gain a better understanding of ADHD by identifying ADHD symptoms in their children. This success story shows that the parent saw similar symptoms in his life and had successfully dealt with them. Adler suggests that parents screen their children for ADHD.

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear. Anxiety refers to a concern about the future and fear refers to current events. These feelings can cause physical symptoms such as fast heartbeat and shaking. These are the things that people suffering from anxiety want to share with you.

Vyvanse dosing strategies explained in detail here:
Yes, water titration: an important topic since Vyvanse first came out, and this is the *single most visited post at CorePsych for over 8 years.*
To see the connection between brain science and common sense: details, evidence matters.
This point is #7: Take the Vyvanse capsule at the lowest dose, 20mg, break it 1/2 and pour the powdered contents into 2 oz of water in a measuring cup. Throw away the gelatin capsule.
We've had excellent results dosing down to 5mg using 4 oz of water on the 20 mg capsule of Vyvanse. And, yes, it's OK in the refrigerator - just mark it so someone else doesn't drink it. Do tell your doc, but rest assured, they won't have a problem if you consider even more careful dosing.
