Convincing teens or young adults about the importance of sticking with a treatment plan for their ADHD proves challenging for many parents. What is the best way for a parent to support transition-age youth through a period when they reject their diagnosis or treatment completely? What if something in the treatment plan is not working? What can a parent do if they notice symptoms are becoming a problem, but the teen or young adult either is not seeing it—or does not want to discuss the matter? ADHD coach Kate Barrett shares treatment compliance strategies and tips to help parents support teens or young adults through a successful transition toward adulthood.

Kate Barrett, ACG, ACC
Kate Barrett, ACG, ACC, is a writer and ADHD and EF coach and founder of Coaching Cville, providing services internationally from Charlottesville, Virginia. Her background includes extensive volunteer and advocacy roles in the public school system and ADHD expert roles in parent, couple, and student education seminars. She provides individual and group programs locally and internationally and speaks regularly to professionals, community, and industry on executive function and ADHD. Barrett’s focus is to overlay executive function theory with ADHD coaching in order to facilitate systemic scaffolding and support for those diagnosed with ADHD. In addition, she finds teaching and coaching non-ADHD caregivers and partners on the intricacies of ADHD further supports all members of the relationship through the development and practice of empathy and appreciation for neurodiversity within the family structure.

Rebecca Phillips Epstein has ADHD. But as with many high-achieving girls, her symptoms were missed early on. Then, during the pandemic, it finally clicked: She discovered a Twitter thread about people who beat themselves up for being lazy when clearly they’re not.

Rebecca has always been aware of her challenges — procrastination, being late, and having a million great ideas that never get finished. As a screenplay writer and essayist, she’d overcompensate so no one would be the wiser. Hear how an ADHD diagnosis helped her rethink what she used to call “personality failures” or “laziness.” Also in this episode: How depression treatment before her ADHD diagnosis helped her tread water but never “surf.” Rebecca also talks about her decision to stop breastfeeding her second child in order to stay on her ADHD medication.

KNOWLEDGE IN HORMONES, NEUROTRANSMITTER, THE STIGMA ABOUT CLINICAL DEPRESSION, AND ANXIETY DISORDER.

featured image

Hormones and neurotransmitters both function in the body as chemical messengers. Hormones are chemical molecules generated by the endocrine system, such as oxytocin, melatonin, estrogen, and testosterone, that are released by cells into extracellular fluids to regulate the metabolic function of other cells. Neurotransmitters are endogenous substances such as dopamine, glutamate, endorphin, and serotonin that carry impulses from one nerve cell to another via a chemical synapse.

The presentation tackles Clinical depression, it is a significant medical condition that affects your mood, thinking, and behavior. Clinical depression impairs an individual’s ability to operate normally. They frequently lose interest in formerly pleasurable things, and they feel gloomy and hopeless for long periods of time. It has an impact on your body, mood, ideas, and actions. It has the potential to alter your eating habits, your feelings and thoughts, your capacity to work and study, and how you connect with others. Anxiety Disorder excessive fear or worry differs from regular feelings of apprehension or anxiety. Anxiety disorders are the most frequent type of mental illness, afflicting about 30% of adults at some point in their lives. Anxiety disorders, on the other hand, are curable, and there are a variety of effective treatments available. Treatment enables the majority of people to live normal, productive lives. It may lead to persons attempting to avoid circumstances that trigger or aggravate their symptoms. Job performance, schoolwork, and personal relationships can all be negatively impacted. It also tackles the causes of it and who is most likely to have it.

It tackles ways of convincing people to end the stigma about clinical depression and anxiety disorders and things you can do to end or at least reduce stigma, for example, is
be conscious of your thoughts and actions, chooses your words with caution, focus on the bright side of things, be conscious of your attitudes and actions, educate yourself and others, everyone should be involved. It is against the law to refuse anyone with certain health problems a job or a service, people should be supported. Treat everyone with dignity and respect, provide encouragement and support and lastly let your voice be heard. Fighting mental health stigma is a vital approach to supporting your mental health while also giving people who are suffering in silence a voice. Depression is something you have. It does not define you.
