Hypochondria or hypochondria refers to a condition where a person is overly concerned about a serious illness. The meaning of hypochondria is an old concept that has been repeatedly redefined. [1] Hypochondria is a condition that causes a misperception of the body’s condition or mind. This can be despite not having formally diagnosed. Hypochondriacs are people who have hypochondriasis. Hypochondriacs are overly concerned about any psychological or physical symptoms they notice, regardless of how minor, and believe they are suffering from a serious illness. [3]
Hypochondria can persist even after a doctor has examined a person. This is also known as hypochondriaism, which refers to the condition of being in a hypochondriatic or acute hypochondria. [4] Hypochondriacs often focus their worries on one particular symptom, such as muscle fatigue, gastro-intestinal problems or palpitations. Hypochondria must be diagnosed within six months. [5]
International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) classifies hypochondriasis as a mental and behavioral disorder. [6] The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) defines the disorder as a somatoform condition[7]. One study has found that it affects about 3% of primary care patients. [8] The 2013 DSM-5 replaced hypochondriasis by the diagnoses somatic symptom disorder (75%) or illness anxiety disorder (25%).. [9][10]
