Public Policy
Research has shown that ADHD patients have a reduced life expectancy by 8.4 years. This is often due to poor management of co-occurring medical conditions such as obesity, drug abuse, and smoking. These conditions can be linked to health-related behaviors that are symptomatic for ADHD, which can lead to poor adherence and disinterest in medical advice.

Program:

Introduction to the Problem
Russell A. Barkley is a well-respected authority on ADHD in adults and children. He has dedicated his entire career to disseminating scientifically-based information about ADHD. Dr. Barkley is a clinical psychologist at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, and Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He is based in Richmond, Virginia.

Obesity
Roberto Olivardia is a Harvard Medical School clinical psychologist and lecturer in Psychiatry. He has a private practice in Lexington, Massachusetts that specializes in treating ADHD, executive functioning issues, as well as issues facing students with learning disabilities. He is also an expert in treating body dysmorphic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and eating disorders in both boys and girls.

Smoking
Scott Kollins is a tenured professor at the Duke University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Scott is the Global Lead in ADHD and Substance Use Disorders for the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He is also the director of Duke ADHD Program. Scott is a licensed clinical psychologist. He also maintains an outpatient clinic through the ADHD Program. Dr. Kollins research interests include digital health and therapeutics, applications of data science in child psychiatric disorders; ADHD behaviors and health; and the early stages of ADHD development.

Substance Abuse

Brooke S. G. Molina is a professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also the director of the Youth and Family Research Program and the ADHD Across the Lifespan clinic's Clinical Research Unit. She is also a licensed clinical psychologist. Dr. Molina studies the causes, treatment, and recovery of ADHD and other drug and alcohol abuse. Over two decades of federal funding has allowed her to conduct longitudinal studies with children and teens, as well as neuroimaging studies on brain structure and function, in relation long-term symptom courses, treatment studies of behavioral approaches and pharmacologic strategies, and the development of primary care-based strategies for managing ADHD.


Implications for Health Care Providers Larry Culpepper is a Boston University School of Medicine professor of Family Medicine. He was also the department's founding chairman. He was the president of the North American Primary Care Group and chairman of the Research Committee of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He is also the chairman of the Board of Rhode Island Public Health Foundation. He currently is the primary care member of an Institute of Medicine Committee on the Assessment of Ongoing Efforts in the Treatment of PTSD (2011-15). He was the first family medicine editor of UpToDate. He is also the editor of Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Primary Care Companion.
