How to Help Someone With Depression

Clinical depression can really take a toll on your enjoyment of even the little things in life like listening to music, dancing, spending time with friends and family, etc. You may be ready to seek treatment if you feel you have lost joy in your hobbies or your relationships. This is a short video expose of my battle with depression and anxiety over the last 10 to 15 years. I am not a doctor, and I do not recommend any treatment for depression. As I did, I highly recommend you seek professional help. I hope that my experiences here will help others struggling with similar issues. There is help.

While it is tempting to try to fix someone’s depression, it is important to remember that your own health is yours.

Always be there for someone who is struggling with depression, especially if they are showing signs of suicide attempts or self-harm. You should not discuss depression with the person, but offer love and support. Encourage them to seek therapy, and remind them what is most important in their lives. You can take someone with depression to see a therapist as often as possible if they are willing.

Anxiety triggers something called the "fight-flight-freeze" response (F3). This automatic response can affect our thoughts, bodies, and behavior. Your thoughts are focused on the threat and your body responds to it by preparing for action. Imagine that you are out walking your dog when a skunk appears from the bushes. To help you recognize the danger, you may think about the skunk like "What if it sprays on us?" To help you protect yourself, your body will also react (heartbeats faster, muscles tense up). You take action. For example, you can remain still and hope the skunk doesn’t notice you (freeze), or run away (flight). As you can see anxiety is a protection. We would be extinct without anxiety!

F3 is crucial to our survival in the face of true danger or threat. But what happens when there's no danger? This is not surprising, as anxiety can trigger the F3 system when we feel there is a danger or threat. You might yell at mom for making you feel anxious about driving your test. You may also call your dad to come pick you up from an activity you are unfamiliar with (flight). You may also feel like your mind is going blank when the teacher asks a question. These are all examples of anxiety that can trigger the F3 alarm, even though they aren't really dangerous. This is called a false alarm ."
